Mice Intestines- thread 2!..

MumOfHals · 19/03/2024 00:33

Hi.

I posted recently about there being mouse intestines outside our house and it being cleared away with a spade ( chucked into the reserve ) and then hosed down.

I had severe anxiety about my daughters ball rolling over where it was on the same day and maybe getting bacteria on it that could cause us to have a disease like weils disease, hantavirus etc etc.

It's now been 2.5 weeks ( 16 days ) last Wednesday I got a sore throat, then a cough, the cough is still awful and the doctor prescribed me antibiotics as a precaution as I was going abroad... today I've come up with a real blood shot eye ( I'm praying it's where I've coughed so much I've popped a blood vessel?????? )

But all these symptoms lead to weils disease.

I'm 33 weeks pregnant, abroad as I can't get hold of a health care professional and I feel scared :(

Is weils disease / hantavirus common in the uk?

You do not have it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am getting cross with you now. This is unrelated. Half the world has got a sore throat and a cough at the moment. Calm down.

I hope you're getting psychiatric help for this.

We have a regular supply of rodent guts at this time of year.. they are unpleasant but harmless.
You need to talk to a Doctor about your health anxiety, this is not normal.

Oh bless you. It's tough when you worry so much. I can relate as my mind took a dark path when I was pregnant - my demon was toxoplasmosis. Everything was fine but it didn't stop me worrying.

Firstly, at the gestation you're talking about the baby is fully formed and less at risk from most things.

Weils disease is caught from the urine of infected rats and I believe usually from swimming through their wee with a cut or swallowing. You are talking about a mouse and its blood. So no, you're not at risk.

I've never heard of hantavirus but I've done some searching - no it's not common in the uk. The most common European hantavirus disease is caused by Puumala hantavirus, carried by the bank vole (Myodes glareolus). The virus is widespread across most of the continent, except for the UK, the Mediterranean coastal regions and the northernmost areas.

The risk of acquiring hantavirus is extremely rare, even among people who are consistently exposed to mice and other rodents. The majority of exposures (70%) occur around the home. Hantavirus poses no significant health risk to WSU employees provided that simple precautions are followed.

Can I Get Hantavirus From Old Mouse Droppings? The short answer is yes. But, it is very unlikely. There are typically less than five cases of Hantavirus reported each year, making it highly unlikely that you will contract this disease.

Mouse droppings are most likely to cause disease when found in high concentrations or areas without steady ventilation

I think you'll be fine unless you licked the dead mouse or the ball straight after it rolled.

There is a dastardly cold and flu going around. It's more likely that you have that. Bloodshot eye is probably from over worry, tiredness and coughing.

Tell the doctor your concerns when you're back.

Morning all.

We're just bobbing on here to say that we're so sorry to hear you're worrying about this so much, OP. It sounds like you're having a really tough time and we understand that pregnancy can be a difficult time, when worries are amplified and magnified. We're sure lots of MNers can empathise too.

We hope you don't mind, but when these types of threads are flagged to us we like to link to our web-guides, which we hope may be helpful. If you'd like to, please do feel free to take a look at our Mental Health page.

Very best wishes from all at MNHQ Flowers

I sympathise OP. Health anxiety is the worst and so magnified during pregnancy.

I fell into a river when I was 35 weeks pregnant and remember reading about Weils disease. I was immersed in water and covered in cuts from hitting brambles on my way down, so a much more risky situation. I was fine, baby is fine,no Weils.

But I know the more I researched it and seeked reassurance from others, the more convinced I became that I had contracted it.

This is your anxious brain tricking you. This is exactly how anxiety works and you are feeding it. The best thing you can do is out it out of your mind.

I know that's not easy but focus your energy on self care, go for a lovely walk, stop at your favourite coffee spot, immerse yourself in baby shopping. Anything to distract your mind.

I promise you will be OK. And of course start the process of seeking help for your mental health as unfortunately mine didn't fully leave me after pregnancy and I still deal with it occasionally.

Not as easy as that when you suffer from anxiety. If you can't be kind or sympathetic don't comment.

It was meant quite light heartedly as we have had this thread before and I reassured OP that I have cleaned up mouse entrails on many, many occasions with nothing but a piece of kitchen towel and a spray of kitchen cleaner and here I am, still alive and germ free from it.

Ah, I see, sorry about that, I didn't read the full last thread
