ill in Thailand

Currently in Thailand. Have the worst upper stomach pain that radiates to my back, kept my bed bound yesterday with no relief from paracetamol or antacids (thought it could be indigestion). Now my legs are so bruised and I have a rash that does not disappear under pressure/glass.

Don't feel too bad within myself, no fever or anything. Just in pain more than anything.

Any idea of what this could be?

We're on a small island with just a tiny little medical centre, no one seems to speak English. Heading to Phuket on Tuesday so might be able to get some better medical advice then. Just want to cry 😞

You need to seek medical advice soner than Tuesday,

Not19foreverpullyourselftogether · 28/01/2024 10:16

Are the bruises spontaneous or could they have been caused by e.g. climbing into/out of a boat?
Can you get back to the mainland before Tuesday? Email a medical centre in Phuket now and they may be able to set up an online consultation.

You need to contact your travel insurance company using the emergency number. They should be able to sort out transfer to nearest hospital asap. Those symptoms sound serious. Even a small medical centre will have some sort of HCP. Pharmacies are usually very good in Thailand.

This is a really good idea. Since covid online consults are very popular.

porridgecake · 28/01/2024 10:26

You really shouldn't wait till Tuesday.

You can make your own decisions, but there is no way I would wait that long to get proper medical advice about this. Whether that's an e consult or high tailing it to the mainland via your medical insurance, I honestly wouldn't wait myself.

Those bruises.... the pain.... and I'm sure you're aware that your left leg/foot is very swollen also. It could all be something simple, but I wouldn't take the chance.

Ring your insurance provider right now.

idontlikealdi · 28/01/2024 10:31

Don't wait until Tuesday. Call the emergency number for your insurance.

Healingfrommothernarc · 28/01/2024 10:31

Make sure to covet up and use deet! Mozzy bites look bad, you need to rule out any mosquito infections pronto. Please seek medical advice.

Healingfrommothernarc · 28/01/2024 10:32

Can you travel to phuket earlier?

notapizzaeater · 28/01/2024 10:42

Have you spoken to your hotel reception ? We needed a doctor and they organised one to come to us that spoke English

Hiwhoeveryyouare · 28/01/2024 10:44

Your legs look swollen and chest pain could be cardio - please get checked out as the flight is long and this could be a DVT.

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 28/01/2024 10:46

You deffo need to get looked at. I second getting a phone consult ASAP and heading to Phuket or Bangkok. If it's sepsis or something tropical then it can turn serious very quickly.

Could you have been bitten by something? Did you have all your vaccinations before you went? Are you taking antimalarials? How long have you been there? Are you alone?

Someone I was travelling with once got tick bite fever. Had no idea she'd been bitten and got progressively sicker. She was fine after a day or two of hospital treatment but don't ignore.

Thunderstruckbysnoring · 28/01/2024 10:48

Definitely call hotel reception or your medical insurance. Better to feel better sooner rather than later and get checked out

Deathbyathousandcats · 28/01/2024 10:49

Another recommendation to call your travel insurance. That’s what it’s there for.

porridgecake · 28/01/2024 10:50

Medical care in Phuket is excellent. Are you on an island near Phuket or somewhere else? You need to make the shortest journey possible IMO. A boat ride is quicker and easier than a flight.

toddlermam · 28/01/2024 10:55

Yes I have travel insurance through Tesco bank. I'm with my partner and my 3 year old son. I am fully vaxxed for those asking. I'm in so much pain with my upper stomach and back I can barely move out of bed. I am going to see if the medical centre can help, I am on Phi Phi island

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 28/01/2024 10:58

Are you in a hotel? They should be able to get a doctor to come to you. Speak to the staff. Use a translate app if necessary.

Your partner needs to be proactive and advocate for you.

porridgecake · 28/01/2024 10:58

The medical centre on Phi Phi should have qualified staff and hopefully someone who speaks English. Take your passport and insurance documents.

Not19foreverpullyourselftogether · 28/01/2024 11:01

If you can’t move to reach a doctor, please call the emergency number for your travel insurance and they can get somebody to you asap.
i don’t mean to alarm you but I think you need to rule out DVT as mentioned by a pp.

porridgecake · 28/01/2024 11:06

I have just googled and there are a couple of 24 hour urgent care centres on Phi Phi with very good reviews. Medworld and Takecare. Get your partner to look up the nearest one. Either call them, get your insurers to call them or the reception at your resort.

Happyhippy99 · 28/01/2024 11:06

Looks like Dengue fever. Please take this very seriously and get immediate help.

Happyhippy99 · 28/01/2024 11:09

Don’t delay getting help. If it progresses to Dengue haemorrhagic shock it can be fatal. Dengue fever is spread by mosquitoes and there is currently no vaccination. It is prevalent in Thailand.

It could be a number of things.

CormorantStrikesBack · 28/01/2024 11:12

Definitely see someone now, I assume you’ve had a long haul flight, you could have a dvt in that leg. Any chance the upper abdo pain is actually chest pain? Dd had a pulmonary embolism and a lot of her pain was back pain.
