High Ferritin for a year ? Any docs give input.?

So i am 34 , non drinker and for past twelve months i have a ferritin ranging between 238-390 . Its currently 238 . Im not overweight and do not drink and all blood tests are normal . Any ideas what this could be and should i be worried ?
bit of background , my baby is now 18 months but during pregnancy My ferritin was actually 6 and i had 2 iv iron transfusions at 30 weeks pregnant . Could this be the cause ?! Gp just keeps adding note saying repeat in 3 months but getting concerned ?!

Not a dr but when i had iron iv last year - mine was 252 for a bit
Then came down

Above 320 would concern me..

But- do you eat a very iron rich diet ?

There are some pretty serious things that high feretin can be..

You could ask for a ct abdomen scan given its been high for so long

Lkakpk · 19/01/2024 13:13

@worldwidetravel2017 mine is currently 238 . Highest its been was 369 i think . Its strange as in pregnancy i got treated for low ferritin so clearly its a new thing and all my previous readings have been low normal.

doctor doesnt seem concerned x

How do u feel in yourself ?

Always ask for a second dr opinion if u feel u need

Lkakpk · 19/01/2024 13:25

@worldwidetravel2017 i have a few things going on .. i suffer chronic migraine and an on cgrp injections ( potentially could be cause ?! ) im also under rhematology due to positive ana and vague auto immune symptoms but no liver issues

One way to reduce ferritin levels is to donate blood regularly (provided there are no underlying concerns).

Purpleandredandyellow · 19/01/2024 17:48

Get tested for haemachromatosis - high ferritin is a possible indicator of it. Treatment is just to donate blood! It can damage your liver if left untreated if it is haemachromatosis.

AnnaMagnani · 19/01/2024 17:49

I'd say it is the iron infusion. Those things really work!

Revengeofthepangolins · 19/01/2024 17:51

Mine is 750 so reading with interest

Lkakpk · 19/01/2024 19:07

@AnnaMagnani thats my gut feeling too but its been over a year now since i had two … is that possible ?

WhatAFoolishFool · 19/01/2024 19:33

Are you breastfeeding? Menstruating? What’s your diet like?

AnnaMagnani · 19/01/2024 19:34

Well if you have a good diet and aren't losing a lot of blood it must be possible.

bicyclesandbeyond · 19/01/2024 19:52

High ferritin can be a reflection of inflammation rather than iron stores so might be linked to your autoimmune/rheumatology stuff... a question for your Rheumatologist? It's not high enough to suggest Haemochromatosis. I'm a GP. X

Lkakpk · 19/01/2024 21:00

@bicyclesandbeyond thankyou for reply . Would you be concerned about it not going down in a year ( actually it has from 360 to level it is now but still high ) ? Would you refer for this type of level to a haematologist and could it be due to the transfusions over a year ago ? Sorry for all the questions but it seems online its only grim scenarios!

@WhatAFoolishFool not breasfeeding . Relatively healthy , dont drink or smoke. Do eat meat but not a massive meat eater

@Revengeofthepangolins really how long for ? What has gp said ?

OP posts:
Lkakpk · 19/01/2024 21:03

@AnnaMagnani i would like to think it was this and not something nasty underlying issue ..

You need to go back Dr and demand to get to root of issues. Lovely advice but without tests it's like throwing darts at a dartboard in the dark. No one can know unless you go get tests done. It's frustrating your go kicking can down road. I hope you get sorted soon. 🙏

I have haemochromitosis, have to have regular blood tests and venesection (like blood donation)

It's important to get it checked and managed as it can lead to organ damage if you have elevated levels for a prolonged time.

bicyclesandbeyond · 19/01/2024 21:35

Your GP should be able to ask a Haematologist for advice via email if they're unsure. That would be quicker than a referral. The fact it's coming down is reassuring though. Are you having periods?

Lkakpk · 19/01/2024 21:48

@bicyclesandbeyond yes regular periods every month . The ironic thing about it all is during my pregnancy my ferritin was at 6 , hence the iron transfusions . Before that my ferritin was always in 50s so higher levels isnt my norm . Im just worried about sinister causes …ive attatched history

@Healingfrommothernarc yep you are right

When it was 6 - did they check 4 causes of low feretin?
Or - did they foolishly just treat symptons?
Have u ever done a poop test // Qfit test ?
Low feretin could of been bowel polyps..

They can get inflamed if not attended too

Id want my colon checking if it was me

worldwidetravel2017 · 20/01/2024 07:22

Other organs can be linked to high feretin - a ct scan could be helpful

Lkakpk · 20/01/2024 15:44

@worldwidetravel2017 i was pregnant at time so they determined that as the cause . I have had a negative fit test yes and ive had a colonoscopy 3 years ago so dont really think its that either

3 years = a long time ago

Id ask 4 another qfit test if the last one was not v recent
