Resistant scabies?

38 replies

redfacebigdisgrace · 02/01/2024 19:06

Anyone else? We’ve had it for a year on and off. Treated about 15 times. Treated everyone together. Washed bedding clothes etc… but still the buggers come back.

The pharmacist says there’s a permethrin resistant strain. The other drug Dermbac is out of stock everywhere. It’s really affecting my teenage son’s mental health as he’s starting to get OCD and anxious.

Any advice? We’re waiting to see a dermatologist privately now.

Gosh no advice but clocked on your post as I think we're having a similar issue. Didn't know they were becoming resistant. That's really worrying! It's going to become a big problem!

3kidsaremorethanenough · 06/01/2024 21:27

Any update op? We're in the same boat with DD1 and her friends. Have blitzed the whole house today bedding the works and everyone applying permatin cream this evening for the 2nd time in two months, ready to loose the plot 🙈🙈

RainbowConnection1 · 06/01/2024 21:32

I feel for all of you. We had scabies in the house a few months back and it drove me absolutely insane. Took two goes of the cream to finally get rid but the itch persisted for weeks afterwards.

I really hope you manage to find a treatment that works, I remember the misery all too well.

redfacebigdisgrace · 07/01/2024 08:57

Hi all, we’ve got a private dermatologist appointment in 10 days. Will try another go with the Permethrin too. What a nightmare.

Some of Dds friends are now using Benzyl benzoate it's available over the counter and has seemed to help more so than the permatin. If this doesn't work this time I think I'll be trying that. Although some were saying it actually feels like your on fire after you put it on!

Alteredvista · 09/01/2024 13:12

Speaking from experience here...make sure when you did the permethrin you did it to the letter. So --make sure you treat all close contacts,
-leave the permethrin on for at least 12 hours (some guidelines are now saying 24hrs)
-cover entire body (some are now saying include face and scalp) so will probably need two tubes for each application,

  • everyone (eg infected and close contacts) does second treatment 1 week later.
-wash bedding, ,towels ,night clothes underwear etc at 50 degrees at the time of each treatment. Bag up and quarantine clothes you can't wash for 72 hours at room temp.

However if despite that it doesn't work, don't go OCD about thr cleaning side of things, thinking this was why it failed. Catching scabies from furnishings and bed clothes is actually quite hard. Shared towels (dish towels, hand towels) are probably the riskiest. Also if you handle the washing and need to stick your hands in socks to unravel them is probably risky. However ,that being said, it's still unlikely.

There is increasing evidence of permethrin resistance and your next step should therefore be a gp consultation for second line treatment with oral ivermectin. Similar treatment strategy to above but obviously it's a tablet, not a cream. You still need two doses 7-14 days apart. GP should be able to prescribe ivermectin but may need verbal consent from local dermatology team.

Have you had any success? We are currently struggling with this. The itch had lessoned in some part.of my body and cleared but it feels like they have now migrated to other parts of the body as not itching there instead!

Thethingswedoforlove · 03/02/2024 11:22

@Totallybannanas have you taken ivermectin?

Totallybannanas · 03/02/2024 11:35

No we were given premethrin, I've now tried Benzyl Benzoate which I've brought I've eBay 😔 as there is a shortage of treatments where I live. I've been bathing in tea trea oil and neem oil which stinks. Seems to be helping but I've had a few odd spots pop up

redfacebigdisgrace · 03/02/2024 12:22

Hi all, reporting back. We got a private dermatologist appointment. He recommended the benzoyl benzoate. Gave us instructions on how to mix it up with oil. Links from the internet for buying it! You need to leave it in for 24 hours . Seems to have gone the trick, doing one more session today to make sure.

The GP couldn’t prescribe and NHS waiting for a dermatologist is huge. Where are you based? There seems to be particular resistance here in our part of Scotland.

Southwest, there have been an outbreak in a couple of schools. I brought mine off eBay, had good recommendations just hoping its legit but I am so desperate. Where did you purchase yours from?

redfacebigdisgrace · 03/02/2024 13:00

@Totallybannanas I’ll DM you.

Calmyagent · 18/02/2024 21:52

Would you be able to post details to me too please. Desperate here now with it.

emmaempenadas · 18/02/2024 23:23

I used to use bb on my horse for sweet itch.

redfacebigdisgrace · 21/02/2024 06:48

Oh gosh. That’s awful. I think you should definitely see the GP and ask about the benzoyl but I don’t think you should do it off the shelf for such a young one. Have they been treated with permethrin. Is it definitely scabies?

It’s been terrible ! GP haven’t been great to be honest , we see a different doctor every visit and get told it could be scabies then next doctor says it’s not. We have all done permethrin cream 3 times. The last one was last Thursday evening and still got some spots but I don’t know how long they should take to all clear ? It seems to flare up more when she’s warm , again not sure if that’s even the case with scabies but information online is minimal I find. Going to give it at least a week from last treatment before going back to GP , so will ask about it there if still no improvement thank you x

VanilleFraise · 19/07/2024 11:10

@redfacebigdisgrace

Could yiu message me with the links too please? My sons been struggling with this since March and it never ever quite goes away. Must be in double figures with the amounts of treatments done (derbac / permethrin).

Me and my husband have now also caught it and my second treatment had failed. Doing a third treatment today but not particularly hopeful.

Many thanks
