Resistant scabies?

redfacebigdisgrace · 02/01/2024 19:06

Anyone else? We’ve had it for a year on and off. Treated about 15 times. Treated everyone together. Washed bedding clothes etc… but still the buggers come back.

The pharmacist says there’s a permethrin resistant strain. The other drug Dermbac is out of stock everywhere. It’s really affecting my teenage son’s mental health as he’s starting to get OCD and anxious.

Any advice? We’re waiting to see a dermatologist privately now.

Hi there, would you be able to send me the link also. I know this thread was some time ago but need help with this

Oceanflorida123 · 28/01/2025 10:07

Hi, my family are also struggling with scabies, permethrin and Derbac M haven’t worked. Can anyone advise me further on the benzoyl Benzoate route?

Oceanflorida123 · 28/01/2025 12:54

@redfacebigdisgrace I have private messaged you as would really like some advice from a fellow sufferer! My family is desperate for something that works to get rid of scabies!!

This is the link that @redfacebigdisgrace sent me. Although I will say that I didn't find it did anything for me.

Ivermectin oral tablets are now available in the UK as a licensed medicine .
They are only available on prescription .Ask your GP surgery if you feel other treatments have not been effective .

Thequeenofwishfulthinking · 29/01/2025 00:07

I would request the tablet from your GP.
I caught it approximately 6 months ago but no one else in the house had symptoms at any stage.
We each used Permethrin twice as directed and this was fortunately successful. I put it on our faces and scalps as well as everywhere else and went over some areas twice as we had a spare tube.
I ended up removing quite a lot of the critters myself by massaging an area then pressing down and giving a small squeeze. Eventually one would pop out or stringy bits of one. (apologies)
This was post treatment and I’m assuming they were dead. Despite what I was told and read you definitely can see them and they are much bigger than I expected.
Some were dark (male) and some were clear (female.) I am a sporner so I found this very satisfying and quite addictive.
Im aware the dead ones can remain under the skin for a long time. This can cause a reaction and more itching which I wanted to avoid if at all possible. The sooner they left my body the better as far as I was concerned.
I was the only person with spots, sores and itching in our house and it took approximately 8 weeks for my skin to return to normal.
im aware there’s always a risk of one of us coming into contact with the person who transmitted it. If there is a next time and the cream doesn’t work I think I would beg my GP for the tablet if I had to.
Overall I found the whole thing horrendous. It affected my mental health and made me feel disgusting alongside the physical symptoms. The sleep deprivation alone was a hurdle to enjoying normal life.
i was fortunate to get some stronger antihistamines from the GP which make the intense itching more tolerable.,
I hope everyone who has the misfortune to experience scabies recovers as quickly as possible.

Oceanflorida123 · 29/01/2025 08:46

Thanks but the GP is not allowed to prescribe the tablet only a dermatologist. Long nhs waitlist 😩 I have now got some stronger antihistamines for the itching, it’s the not knowing whether they’ve gone or not that’s frustrating, still get odd red spots come up that are intensely itchy/sore but not as many now. Apparently scabies can now be resistant to permethrin and Derbac M so it’s frustrating that can’t get the next line of treatment from the GP 😡

I have posted the link upthread, although it did nothing for me.

I had scabies for a few months and repeated treatments umpteen times. I felt it was on my neck and shoulders and in my hair. In the end I saw a consultant dermatologist. He told me that you can't get scabies in your hair and on your neck.

After examining me, he told me that I didn't have it at all, and just because I was still itching and still having new marks appearing didn't actually mean I had scabies. What it did mean was that I was stuck in an itch /scratch cycle- and you can do a lot of damage to your skin by scratching it.

You need to see a doctor (again) I'd say. I had to pay for the dermatologist, but only had one appointment and he was worth every penny.

Do take care.

I'm waiting to see dermatologist 18 weeks waiting list, I done yet another treatment of malathion 2 days ago and I have 3 new scratch burrows im just going insane with it the cleaning and washing every day my gp told me she won't prescribe me anymore treatment as obviously its not working 😕

Oceanflorida123 · 15/04/2025 21:56

I’ve been using Eurax cream prescribed by GP along with sulphur soap, both are helping keeping scabies under control, however not completely eradicated 😩

@redfacebigdisgrace just checking in, was benzyl benzoate the treatment that finally worked for you all?
Even Ivermectin hasn’t worked for me

It’s literally 3 months since I’ve been treating!
