Making one small change each week

ToriTheStoryteller · 01/01/2024 08:01

I can't do overhauls, I don't want to count calories but I recognise that I'm living in a way that isn't making me feel very happy or healthy.

So, I'm going to make one change starting today, then add in another next week, and so on. By the end of the year I'm hoping that will ads up to a significant change for the better in how I feel, look and live.

Anyone else up for a more gentle alternative to massive resolutions? I'll update each week anyway even if no-one replies, so I record what I've done😂.

Week 1: No phone use after 8pm. I'm hoping that will improve my sleep, it's got out of hand in the last few months.

@WinterLobelia Thanks I've not seen that one. It's so tough isn't it.

mum2jakie · 10/03/2024 21:47

How has everyone got on over the past week?

I've done well remembering to take a daily iron supplement this week. I think I only forgot one day. This week I'm swapping crisps for an item of fruit - taking on board suggestion that swapping is much easier than just cutting something out.

Love this! Well done 😊

I am back to work today having been off with stress related illness for the last few weeks. Really taken the time to rest, look after my skin, try to walk 10,000 steps a day, take vitamins, and read. Love your swapping out crisps for fruit - I'm aiming to do this with chocolate this week.

DustyLee123 · 11/03/2024 07:17

I found swapping crisps for carrot/pepper/cucumber sticks worked as I still got the crunch.

ToriTheStoryteller · 14/03/2024 07:22

Morning all. I've been reading through the thread as inspiration as I haven't joined it for a couple of weeks.
Some of my habits have fallen off a cliff, purely because the stress at work has meant spending hours on my phone, either looking for a new job or staying in contact with friends who have gone. It made me realise so clearly that phone use is like the base camp to all my issues: I've slept worse, I've forgotten some habits, not taken HRT consistently, and consequently been a fraz-bag to everyone who has had the misfortune to come within 10ft of me.😂

So, back to basics. Phone use for specific reasons and only checking for messages at specific times (eg, before school runs in case friends need favours), and nothing after 8pm.

Then work on getting all my other habits back into the daily routine. On a positive note, afternoon snacking is dead (can't believe I've managed that one!) and the "only working my hours" has been a walk in the park because I spend most of the day on job sites or doing work-based courses to boost knowledge. Silver linings...😁

Onwards and upwards, starting with a walk in the sun today.

Yes, I need a reset too.
Ive been consistently drinking the green tea, but the apple and orange every day has gone due to a health emergency in the family.
Back to basics, apple and orange today!

mum2jakie · 16/03/2024 21:12

Yeah swapping fruit for crisps hasn't caught on as yet. Will keep at it from next week. My phone use will be a bit higher as well but have still managed to keep phones downstairs at bedtime to reduce temptation for late night scrolling.

Bubidoo · 17/03/2024 08:13

Like the keeping phones out of the bedroom 🙂

I'm trying a vegan diet for a week. I've toyed with the idea and then in terms of health benefits, I realise I follow a plan quite well with it's stricter rules. Must say I feel quite good this morning 🍄🌿🥑 though I can't imagine Easter without Cadbury milk chocolate...

I have well and truly fallen off the wagon!!

Never mind! Just use the thread as inspiration to keep on and make a fresh start next week!

This week I'm going to try to multi task and prepare the evening meal during the lunch break that I very rarely remember to take. Killing two birds with one stone!

ToriTheStoryteller · 20/03/2024 19:08

Well I've managed to get phone use back to a more manageable level so that's helping with tiredness and I'm remembering to take HRT every night again.
Not putting any new habits in this week, as mentally it's a bit tough with a few things going on. I'll just carry on re-embedding the habits I'd started for the next couple of weeks before i think of a new one. The early morning walks are so lovely now, feeling warmth in the sun, it's been a great way to start each day.

Hope everyone is doing ok. Remember, no-one's failing, let's reframe our achievements positively and celebrate all the times we HAVE done something positive for our health and happiness.😍

Me too

Climbing back on the wagon today and getting back to basics with the original changes I made.

Glad you're all still here, makes it easier to get back onboard.

Definitely feel the same about this thread, it makes me want to do better when I know you lot are trying too.😍

I'm not doing brilliantly, some habits going better than others but I'm trying to stay positive by thinking that I wasn't doing ANY of them at the start of the year.

Phone is staying in the kitchen from 8pm as from today as i keep slipping and scrolling or checking for any messages in the evenings. Once I've finished in the kitchen at around 7pm I don't need to go back out there as DH makes the evening drinks so that will make it easy to ignore until morning.

I need to start again too. Ive stopped the fruit, and forgot the green tea today .
tomorrow I’ll do better.

mum2jakie · 27/03/2024 09:39

It's nice to have this thread as a reminder not to give up. Daily iron tablets have slipped since the kids have been off school but I'm concentrating on reintroducing this every evening.

mum2jakie · 01/04/2024 09:53

I used my mobile phone for an hour more this week than previous week. Not bad considering this was a bank holiday weekend. It gives me an easy target to bring it down again next week.

mum2jakie · 08/04/2024 09:17

An hour and a half reduction in phone use this week so moving in the right direction! How's everyone else getting on?

DustyLee123 · 08/04/2024 21:08

Ive run out of green tea, so note to self to keep a spare box in, and I’m actually missing it!
But I’ve given up on eating an apple and orange every day, the orange was ok, but I’m not a big fan of apples. I eat enough fruit/veg any way.

OnHerSolidFoundations · 09/04/2024 21:54

Is it too pate to join?

So far this year I have:

Started taking symprove
Cut way back on alcohol
Started using my standing desk again.
Recently stopped taking my HRT as I didn't like the side effects which were being fatter and anxiety/ palpitations
Taking vitD and calcium everyday

I have plans to:
Start taking collagen
Start daily exercise - this is my biggest hurdle
Cut out sugar
Do the very expensive Womanise tests that I've ordered in a bid to get help managing peri symptoms
Drink more water
Do more yoga

DustyLee123 · 10/04/2024 06:54

Morning all. Great to see everyone still going, and to have newbies on board!

Life for me is a bit of a shitshow at the moment but after checking in on this thread I realised I have hit a new low, feeling even worse than in January. I hate that I haven't made the most of the Easter holidays so DS hasn't wanted to do much with me as I'm so grumpy.

So, back to basics. I'm going to spend the rest of April concentrating on the habits I had already started, then add a new one in a couple of weeks.

Hope everyone is OK. It's really motivating to see your ideas, and how they are being tweaked if they don't quite work, rather than it being a rigid "it didn't work so I failed"😁. Even with my state at the moment, I'm not going to tell myself I've failed at this challenge, but instead I feel proud that I managed to build up 10 weeks of habits, and I know I will embed them into my daily life again and add more once I'm a bit stronger in a few weeks.
