6th Febrile Convulsion

mummynumnum · 16/03/2008 19:11

DD had 6th FC yesterday. Two in one day brought on by chest infection. Took docs advice that she is prone to these and may have more and was not overly anxious, but now at home wondering whether I should have pushed for further investigation.

Anyone?

No experience, but wanted to bump for you - and mention that a neighbour told me the other day both her kids had FCs a lot as babies/young kids. I think its true that some children are prone to them and some not, but if you are anxious you have every right to ask another doctor for an opinion, at the least.

ROSEgarden · 16/03/2008 19:44

i would get a second opinion as the frequency would concern me..assume your LO has a temp with this infection?, if so try and keep as cool as poss esp at bedtime(my dd gets very warm that time?)as everything gets worse on night(colds/coughs etc)

mummynumnum · 16/03/2008 19:55

Yes we are controlling temp with calpol and nurofen and keeping a v close eye. Got out of hosp this morn and will prob go and see GP tomorrow. Just nipping up stairs to see if she is ok.

2 in a day warrants being seen by paediatrician.

I advise to take your child to A&E or out of hours GP.

mummynumnum · 16/03/2008 20:00

We were seen by paediatrician at hosp and said if she has more they may put under paed care with possible ECG. Just think now I should have been persistent about getting this done straight away.

emma1977 · 16/03/2008 20:05

Ring the paediatrician's secretary tomorrow morning and ask if your dd can be reviewed urgently.

EEGs can often take a few days to happen, even when in inpatient.

Is she on any medication for the chest infection? How high are her temps going and how long has she fitted for? How is she in herself between fits?

lenny101 · 16/03/2008 20:08

I wouldn't take any chances and would get her seen now rather than waiting till tomorrow. Also, I'm not sure I'd leave her, the docs will need full a history as possible.

mummynumnum · 16/03/2008 20:08

DD had first fc yesterday at 2pm ish. Took to A & E and given med for chest infection. Augmentin. About to leave and had 2nd one at about 7pm. fitted for about 3mins on bith occasions. Taken up to childrens ward after that. No more fits today and temp ok at min. 36.2. Has been good in herself between fits.

Ah I see, "6th FC".... I thought you meant today!

mummynumnum · 16/03/2008 20:19

No, I would be camped out at A & E if that was case. Just wondering whether should have pushed for referral to paed for EEG. had 6 in under a yr. 2 yesterday. sorry I was not very clear.

OP posts:
emma1977 · 16/03/2008 20:20

From what you say, its sounds as though you have her temp under control which is the most important thing and the fact that the fits are short and that she is normal in between is reassuring.

The ABs should hopefully kick in and start clearing the infection within 24 hrs.

However, should she fit again- take her to A&E. I would still be inclined to contact the paediatricians tomorrow if you remain concerned for her to be reviewed.

I hope tonight remains uneventful for you both.

mummynumnum · 16/03/2008 20:21

She is whimpering a bit but temp is fine. The thermometer is a loud speaking thing that is prob disturbing her and making her whimper. had some great advice-ta!

BTW in case you were worrying, febrile convulsions don't cause epilepsy or brain damage. If she was having seizures UNRELATED to temps, an urgent EEG would be appropriate.

nobodysfool · 16/03/2008 20:29

My ds has convulsions and at the last one we were refered to see a specialist.
We were asked to video a fit-on our mobile-i told her there was no chance as i was more concerned about checking ds that videoing also to phone an ambulance asap (i always did anyway) and to ask them to do a blood glucose test straight away and to make sure the result was put on the notes.
I'm not sure what they are expecting to read from the results but i wonder if it's worth you asking for on to be done?
Really hope your Lo feels better soon and that they don't have anymore FC's.

mummynumnum · 16/03/2008 20:38

Me to.

I always phone ambulance too.

sure its not epilepsy as it is always with temp but there is just always that nagging worry.

nobodysfool · 16/03/2008 20:48

A & E told us to phone for an ambulance regardless. They said you should never drive incase another one happened in the car.

wannaBe · 16/03/2008 20:59

my sister's ds was seen just last week because of the convulsions he's had (has also had 6/7 I think).

The pediatrician told her that as they only come on with a high temp he is crrtain that they are just temp related, (and bil had epilepsi as a child so there was ample reason for concern).

He also said that it's not the temperature as such, but the speed at which it rises, so ie if she seems fine and then her temp rises very quickly a convulsion is more likely to happen.

It's very frightening but try not to worry. Febral convulsions are actually extremely common in children under the age of 7.

nobodysfool · 16/03/2008 21:02

totally agree with common....but still very scary for those watching on.
Joke of it is the dc is usually fine after,it's just us that continues to worry at every temp.

VictorianSqualor · 16/03/2008 21:18

When DD was having febrile convulsions she didn't seem to have a temp so was tested for other things, she had a brain scan and this thing where they put electrodes(?) on her to test for epilepsy.

Thankfully she was fine and has now grown out of them but they did say the only reason they tested her for everything was because she had been fine, with no obvious temperature when the fits happened. They decided in the end that she must have had rising peaks of temperature or something.

Ds had 2 febrile convulsions in one day when he was two. I went straight to A&E after the first one and the second happened while we were there. It was a terrifying experience (my heart is beating faster just thinking about it) as it went on for a long time and the bed was suddenly surrounded by what seemed like dozens of staff all trying to stop the fitting - he was given diazepam. The same day they did a CAT scan and he was also referred for an EEG a couple of months later to check for signs of epilepsy.

Everything came back normal and he never had any more after that, but I didn't half panic everytime his temp went up.

He's now 5 and has probably grown out of them altogether - I sincerely hope so anyway.

Christywhisty · 16/03/2008 22:38

Both my DC's have had FC's. My DD had 4 when she was 3 and 4, but my DS 12 has had about 20 (lost count) and the last one was when he was 2 years ago when he was 10 and a half . One day he had 3 , but we were on holiday in Portugal and the english doctor really didn't want to send him to hospital.

We did see a paediatrician when he continued having them past 5 who wasn't worried and then again when he was 9. He had an FC when he was about 8 and half then in the summer he started getting headaches.

He had an ECG, MRI scan and a complete eyetest with an opthamologist. Turned out the headaches were caused by chronic sinus problems (mri scan showed that)and there was no sign of epilepsy.
I was told only to call an amubulance if they went over 5 minutes and was given diazipam just incase, which we never used.
However we did call an ambulance for the one when he was 8 because he was in a toilet in Macdonalds when he had it. He managed to hit the back of his head when he started fitting then hit his eye on the toilet seat Scared a poor man half to death.
I was worried about concussion. He was over it by the time the ambulance came, but he always unconscious for ages afterwards and didn't come round until he was at the hospital.

mummynumnum · 17/03/2008 06:52

bless them all and their parents. Think people are right. It is so stressful for paretns.

My dd2 has had just one febrile convulsion, and I used a paracetamol suppository which brought her temperature down very fast. I've also heard of people giving their children valium (I think!) suppositories when having repaeted convulsions (obviously on doctor's advice).

My dd1 had 6 seizures in total, and had an ECG and EEG which were both normal. In the end she was diagnosed with reflex anoxic seizures.

mummynumnum, it your situation I would push for an ECG and EEG.

mummynumnum · 17/03/2008 08:00

can you buy suppositories over counter or are they prescription?
