Coil fitting not a success....

LilRedWG · 15/03/2008 11:39

I went to have my coil fitted yesterday. Unfortunately, as I had a CS with DD (and no contractions or dilation at all) the doctor couldn't fit it She tried, bless her - it hurt so much I thought I was going to throw up.

Anyway, the long and the short of it is that I'm being refered to a Gynae. to have it fitted with a local anaesthetic. DH is not happy about this and is worrying about me.

Does anyone have any experience of this procedure they are willing to share?

Many thanks.

Sorry, no experience personally (I had cs too but had been in labour so they were able to get it in) but my bf's sister had it done with a local. It was easy peasy! Well as easy peasy as anything like that ever is but definately nothing to worry about.

bellavita · 15/03/2008 22:57

Lil - I have had two cs. My coil has now been in four years, but I remember for days after having it fitted I felt so sick (I think with the thought of the uncomfortablness of having it put in).

The GP and nurse had numerous goes and on their last try it went in, but it was touch and go whether they could do it or not.

Hope everything goes ok for you.

Highlander · 16/03/2008 08:34

I too have had 2 CSs and never laboured. The nurse at my pre-assessment appt that my cervix would be unfavourable and to take plenty of pain relief about 20mins before the fitting.

I took 75mg of Volterol (Dicolofenac)and 1g of paracetamol beforehand and it was uncomfortable but definitely OK.

I had mine done at a sexual health clinic, run by gynae docs. They do millions of IUDs every day and are expert fitters, whereas your GP is lucky to do 1/week.

Maybe you could try again at a clinic with plenty of pain relief beforehand?

Best of luck - I'm delighted with mine! (just had a refular coil, not the horrible mirena)

cheesesarnie · 16/03/2008 08:47

i had coil after 2 csections with no problems-but i had had contractions and dilated.but after 3rd i went to have mirena coil and they couldnt do it-i was more or less carried to the car!!!it really hurt!they then gave me a normal one but i had to go to hospital for scans etc and use 3 different forms of contraception until they knew it was in properly!
i know nothing of what your going to have done but wanted to say it isnt unusual for them not to able to get them in.

bellavita · 16/03/2008 10:56

Highlander - why do you say the "horrible mirena"?

LilRedWG · 17/03/2008 11:43

Thanks ladies - I don't feel quite so abnormal now knowing that I'm not the only one.

Ouch, LilRed!

I had one (Mirena) fitted after 2 CS, but dilated with DS, and it was fine.

Where do you have to go to have it done now? As others have said, these things are generally better done by people who do them every day anyway (for me it was blood tests - much better at hospital with phlebotomists (sp?) than being pin-cushioned by practice nurse!), so tell DH to calm down - nice that he worries, though - I got neither worry nor sympathy!

BellaLasagne · 17/03/2008 11:55

Goodness you're all so brave!

I've contemplated Mirena for heavy AF but am so put off because I have a reverted uterus which apparently makes insertion very difficult.

I've had 2 DCs vaginally so have dilated, but one GP said I had a tight cervix when I went for a smear 12m after delivering 1st DC. I also had MC at 6 weeks after having both DCs (so would have been no. 3) but GP couldn't tell 10 days later if my cervix had softened or not.

The thought of the whole thing leaves me terrified!

Good luck.

LilRedWG · 17/03/2008 11:59

Bella - you've just reminded me that I have dilated and had some contractions! When I lost my second baby I had a D&C and was given the pessary to make me dilate too early, so started to contract and dilate before under anaesthetic.

How could I have forgotten that - I feel bloody awful now, my poor little baby.

OP posts:
stealthsquiggle · 17/03/2008 12:00

Because the experience (not the baby) is something you need to forget - don't feel bad.

LilRedWG · 17/03/2008 12:02

Thanks SS, you are (of course and as always) right. I haven't forgotten my babies, but do need to forget that day.

So sorry LRWG

LilRedWG · 17/03/2008 12:19

Don't be! I would have remembered sooner or later anyway! DH and others have probably remembered but not liked to remind me (ME? Overemotional - never .

Please please please do not feel that you need to apologise Bella!

Right - I've got an appointment for 14th April. Any last minute advice (other than run for the hills )?

OP posts:
LilRedWG · 01/04/2008 16:27

I've solved the DH worry - he'll be in India on business when I have it done.

LilRedWG · 08/04/2008 11:52

Come on! Someone please tell me that you truly don't feel anything when done with a local and that I'll be fine afterwards. Please.

I has a Mirena fitted only 4 months ago. First attempt failed. Went back two weeks later and after one and a half hours!!! and three docs it was finally fitted. I took some pain killers before and for a few days after.

Sorry to tell you but yes it hurt when it was fitted, took afew weeks for the pain to go (abit like period pain). Bleeding has only just settled as well but I have to say it was worth every minute of discomfort. I will never look back.

My periods are practically nothing now, before they were very very heavy. Get very little period pain, before used to have crap that would literaly bring me to tears.

No pills, three monthly injections, faffing with hormonal imbalances (apart from the usual fluctuations)..

Go for it!!! its bril

cupcake78 · 08/04/2008 13:43

Sorry should have also mentioned after an hour of trying I had a local anesthetic to ease to discomfort. Only advice is be prepared, you know its not going to be pleasent but a mins (in most cases) and 5 yrs of hassel free periods. Worth every second.

LilRedWG · 08/04/2008 14:13

Thanks Cupcake. I've already had the failed painful attempt so I'm hoping that this one will go smoother.

iwouldgoouttonight · 08/04/2008 14:13

I didn't realise it was easier if you'd already had a vaginal birth (my doctor doesn't tell me anything - she didn't tell me to take painkillers either!) I had the coil (mirena) fitted before I'd had any children and it was fine. I didn't have local anaesthetic though so I can't give you any advice on how that will be. But I had mine fitted with no pain relief and it was fine, felt a bit like a period cramp which lasted a few seconds and then I was fine after. Mine was fine for two years until I had it removed to have DS, then I've had another since then. Hardly any periods since then, which is a bonus!

LilRedWG · 14/04/2008 21:15

Flipping heck - that made my eyes water, in more ways than one, but it's done now.

Coil is fitted, apparently I have an "extremely closed cervix"

Strangely it was emotionally more difficult than physically, as the physically feelings triggered memories of D&C and two miscarriage. The doctor and nurses were great though and are finding out about therapy for me.

Just skimmed the thread. i had Exactly the same prob (turned out i had fibroids, polyps and adenomyosis) And i had it put in with a hysteroscopy. I had a general anaesthetic and it was all fine. I also had an emergency c section

nothing to worry about at all

I had it taken out a couple of years later, as it didnt agree with me but when it works it works wonderfully.

newmama0 · 14/04/2008 22:41

i had the same problem so had it done with general anaesthetic

all was fine a bit of bleeding and cramping

then the bloody thing came out a week later!!

going for the implant tomorrow

LilRedWG · 25/04/2008 16:52

Thanks both.
