I was so keen for DD2 to get chicken pox and now its all over her bottom like really bad nappy rash and i feel awful i tried to get her to catch it.
Any ideas on how to relive the discomfort? I hat that she cries so loudly in pain every time I change her nappy.

How old is she? When my DD had it at 2.10 she hardly seemed to suffer at all and we put it down to the fact that the younger they get it the less they seem to suffer. Has the area got infected do you think, through her scratching?

Spaceman · 14/03/2008 21:14

Piriteze taken orally to relieve the itching.

Smurfs · 14/03/2008 21:14

Porridge oats in a sock in the bath water. I promise it works DD was covered head to toe and it helped to stop the itching.

clutteredup · 14/03/2008 21:21

I've got the piriton, she's 14 months old so no scratching - that's why i wanted her to get it now - but I suppose it might be getting infected on her bottom beacause of her nappy and she had quite bad nappy rash before it came out I guess because of the virus, so it was quite raw to begin with and i suppose it must rub a lot.
I'll try the porrige though the other Dc will enjoy the idea of having porrige in the bath instead of for breakfast!!!

I second Aloe Vera, ds1 age 15 monsth got over chicken pox a few weeks ago and Aloe Vera worked wonders

Smurfs · 14/03/2008 21:29

We used all of the following:

calamine in aqueous lotion - less drying than just calamine
sudacrem on spots that looked a bit yucky
porridge oats in catering quantity - squeeze the sock and put the 'milk' on the really itchy spots

hope your DD is better soon

cremolafoam · 14/03/2008 21:31

boots do a glycerine and calamine cream that is thicker that the lotion and thus easier to put on. i also found a teensy bit of peppermint oil( tiny drop) mixed in some ordinary emmolient( like e45) or the bath heped to cool the skin.
poor wee thing.chicken pox is pants.

choccypig · 14/03/2008 21:38

About a teaspoonful of Bicarbonate of Soda in a tepid bath.

cremolafoam · 14/03/2008 21:38

this one

Ds is just getting over chicken pox. The worst of it was between bum cheeks and all over nappy area. He has been in agony and has made his pooing probs worse.

We ended up giving piriton and also kids paracetamol stuff.

The only thing that has worked for us (he wouldn't let us use calamine or anything he wasn't used to) was to smear as much sudo cream as humanly possible on it to stop it rubbing and just to soothe.

It did really help.

Ds lost his voice from all the screaming he was in agony. It was the only thing that releived it taht we could do. Even then was a case of pinning him down

clutteredup · 15/03/2008 07:13

Oh your poor DS Armadillo, Thanks for all the suggestions I'll try Aloe Vera as well as I used to have some and used it for everything its magical stuff. The last stuff i had I bought in the states , it lasted years. Where do you get it in its pure bright green jelly form here?

clutteredup · 16/03/2008 17:21

this may sound dim, but will ready brek do instead of porridge oats to help stop the itching?

Naboo · 19/03/2008 19:40

don't know; but you really made me laugh!!

MrsMar · 19/03/2008 20:01

naboo! I tried the ready brek, actually not too bad, the water actually did feel softer... right up until the point ds did a big sloppy poo in the bath requiring an emergency hoist and much hasty cleaning to avoid poo getting in to open chicken pox scabs... ewwww!

Naboo · 19/03/2008 21:38

and you made me laugh - outloud - again! brilliant.

don't know why i'm laughing as i think my ds has got chickenpox today. doh! where's the rice crispies...i mean, ready brek.

MrsMar · 19/03/2008 23:37

I would have laughed except it's the second time he's done it this week... i must stop giving him broccoli!

I might try fruit and fibre next

Naboo · 20/03/2008 09:46

ready brek and a seive. fully prepared. (balk). .

my little one has got the pox. up his bum too. nice. shove a bit of oatmeal up his crack and he'll be fine. no?

MrsMar · 20/03/2008 23:26

Is that what you did naboo? i put mine in a muslin, but I must admit it oozed out a bit. DS doesn't have spots up his crack but all over his willy and balls poor love... I didn't try the ready brek again, thought it might trigger another pooing sesh.

Naboo · 21/03/2008 20:38

nah, i haven't even used the oatmeal yet. i just enjoyed the imagery of a butt full of cereal on a spotty gobby toddler. he's got them around his groin area too - so i've kept his pants off to air the area. nice look!
