How long before naproxen worked for you?

Google says 1 hour to 3 days. I’m 1 day in and no change so far.

What are you taking it for? I had it for a herniated disc & sciatica but it didn’t work for me

Pigeonqueen · 06/12/2023 18:21

It did nothing for me at all. I was prescribed it for a frozen shoulder. I find the only painkillers that work for me are either high dose Cocodamol or Tramadol. I also found Naproxen really hurt my stomach even though I take a ppi stomach protector long term for other issues I have; just something to be aware of.

ChocHotolate · 06/12/2023 18:25

I was really surprised that it took 2-3 days before I felt any improvement in my pain from it

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 06/12/2023 18:33

Husband was prescribed them for pain in his hip (whilst investigating if it was osteo or just a pulled ligament). They did absolutely nothing for him. GP switched him onto Amitryptilline (sp?) as a nerve blocker, those worked after a few days.

RougeFraise · 06/12/2023 19:38

Bad back, they’re assuming muscular at this point.

ive got a PPI and taking them with food. Have had diclofenac previously with no issues so hoping none with this!

Within a few days. But they made me incredibly drowsy so I stopped taking them during the day. Ibuprofen actually seems to work as well.during the day.

Mine are for a frozen shoulder.

Groovee · 06/12/2023 19:45

250mg wasn't working for my sore back. Dr moved me up to 500mg and it's working great.

Cookerhood · 06/12/2023 19:47

Naproxen can't make you drowsy. Ibuprofen is a bit better for your stomach anyway!

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 06/12/2023 19:55

For tendonosovitis - within a couple of days.
For bulging disks and sciatica - not at all.

MigGirl · 06/12/2023 19:56

I take it occasionally for migraine, only to break a bad cycle as I find only one or two doses do nothing. I have to take it for 3 days and it's not great on.my stomach even though I take a stomach protector. It's certainly never my first choice of painkiller

Should say tendinitis...

RougeFraise · 06/12/2023 21:40

@Cookerhood drowsiness is listed as a side effect on the PIL.

I'm prescribed it for osteoarthritis. I only take it if I know I've got a day with more walking or driving. I also take it to help me exercise more, so 2 hours before my pilates class. I do find it gives me terrible tinnitus and makes me feel a bit dizzy and unbalanced.

Leo227 · 06/12/2023 21:46

I found high dose ibruprofen more effective for back pain than naproxen but I was on 800mg 4 x a day.

Ishouldgodostuff · 06/12/2023 21:59

Ive been prescribed this too for sciatica & I havent noticed any improvement. Ibuprofen is working better during the day & I have codeine/paracetamol to use at night time.

punnetofcherries · 06/12/2023 22:01

I had naproxen for sciatica but they barely touched the pain.
I then had nefapam and tramadol but they made me dopey!

RougeFraise · 06/12/2023 22:06

My understanding is naproxen isn’t good for nerve pain so I’m surprised how many of you have it for sciatica!

My dd takes it for arthritis and fibro and says it takes down her pain from a 7/8 to a 6/7 which helps her think a bit more but not a lot else. I think it helped with a day maybe two. She does use topical high strength Voltarol when things are very bad and she says that works better. Does heat help at all as she uses heat a lot for her pain.
Hope it starts to help you very soon.

mynameiscalypso · 06/12/2023 22:11

I found arcoxia to be a much more effective NSAID than naproxen

OldTinHat · 06/12/2023 22:24

I take naproxen and it does sweet FA tbh. However, my back went into spasm a couple of weeks ago and it was the only thing that took the edge off. I was quite surprised.

I also take tramadol and amitriptyline. Amitriptyline apparently takes a while to build up so you have to take it every day. The others you can take like paracetamol iyswim. Well, that's what I was told, but don't take my word for it!

I have a herniated disc, unstable SI and a trapped nerve in my neck.

Rollerboots · 06/12/2023 22:28

I’ll second that the 500mg dose twice a day works better than the 250mg dose. I could hardly feel the 250mg, but I certainly know of I forget the 500mg.
Take it with Paracetamol if you can, the two together work well.
Good luck.

RougeFraise · 06/12/2023 21:40

@Cookerhood drowsiness is listed as a side effect on the PIL.

That's true but there's no real mechanism for it - people will report all sorts & they have to list them all. Hopefully the lifting of pain results in better sleep.

PlipPlopChoo · 06/12/2023 22:31

I took it for an injury once. It took off the edge at best but you really need to work on the cause of the pain rather than trying to mask it.

Plus naproxen blocked me up like mad.

blueby7 · 06/12/2023 22:43

I also had it prescribed for sciatica and it did absolutely nothing. On amitriptyline now and it worked wonders (after they doubled the dose six weeks down the line!)

PickAChew · 06/12/2023 22:44

I have it prescribed to take as required, as I'm hypermobile and prone to straining things. I don't find it useful as a painkiller as such but I find that it - presumably as the anti-inflammatory that it is-helps me to work something back into place, particularly if I've hurt my back or neck. I can't take repeated doses of it, though.even though I find it gentler on my stomach than ibuprofen.
