Hi, has anyone else been diagnosed with a fatty liver? I have had a recent blood test showing high liver enzymes & the Dr has mentioned fatty liver & cirrhosis. I'm absolutely terrified, have been referred for a scan but goodness knows how long that's going to take.
Anyone else suffer with this & able to offer any advice, especially how to keep the awful anxiety under control that i've just been given a death sentence

My cousin had this diagnosed about ten years ago and she is still going strong! Hers was not alcohol related though - they said she had to lose weight. I would ask for some more specific info about your case from your doctor, try not to
Catastrophise, dr Google will always lead you to the worst conclusion!

DaftFlerken · 07/12/2023 07:05

Thank you, unfortunately the Dr can’t tell me anything more until I have a scan, I’ve been waiting almost 2 months & still not even got a date yet. Weight is gradually coming down & I rarely drink but it’s so hard not to panick

Yes! It’s caused by too much carbohydrates.

Keto reverses it pretty quickly. Look it up.

Search “Non alcoholic fatty liver and keto” and that will give you loads of advice.

theduchessofspork · 07/12/2023 07:12

I think it’s perfectly reversible OP so don’t panic

You won’t need to go to the Keto extreme either - once you’ve had the scan they’ll advise you on diet changes and it sounds like you are already loosing weight. Get them to refer to a dietician if they don’t automatically do it.

Fallenangelofthenorth · 07/12/2023 07:16

My friend got diagnosed with this around 6 months ago. It was alcohol related in her case, but she's given up alcohol since and massively changed her diet and lifestyle and reversed it substantially. I know of someone else years ago who also completely reversed the damage over a 12 month period. Both people did have to make significant lifestyle changes but both were caused by alcohol.

greenacrylicpaint · 07/12/2023 07:21

I had that a gew years ago.
I don't drink and wasn't overweight but failed the 'string test'.
I was told to lose belly fat by going on a low-ish fat, low calorie diet (5:2 was recommended).

scan showed no concern and enzymes went back to normal over the course of a year.
no one could tell my why the blood test was abnormal, possibly due to inflammation of the gallbladder, or a silent hepatitis infection (many, many viruses can cause hepatitis)

worldwidetravel2017 · 07/12/2023 08:07

worldwidetravel2017 · 07/12/2023 08:09

Sell a yummy grilled chicken flat bread

Cut fried foods

itsmyp4rty · 07/12/2023 09:07

It sounds like you're taking this seriously OP and that's really important and you need to listen to your doctor and do everything required. I know someone who died from this but they had been seriously over weight for decades and were too old and unwell for a liver transplant when it came to that point. Start putting your health first and looking after yourself and hopefully it will be fully reversible.

Thank you for all your replies, i'm grateful there is hope. It's so scary to be told a bit of information & then just left waiting for goodness knows how long

I had private liver mri with contrast
If you can afford 500 gbp u could be seen in a week
Look up vista health
I highly recommend
Then once u know 4 sure what it is - u can get 2nd opinion on nhs when they get round to seeing u.

Chilicabbage · 07/12/2023 09:56

Liver is great organ who can to a point repair.
I agree with pp to look at liver friendly diet, no or very little alcohol, plenty of water until you get the scan and know what needs to be done exactly. My issues were illness related and quite severe numbers , but suitable diet helped and all was fine later.
Exercise to get rid of visceral fat as well.

Chilicabbage · 07/12/2023 09:57

How bad were your results?

DaftFlerken · 07/12/2023 10:01

@Chilicabbage my blood results showed ALT @ 57, AST @ 56 but GGT level is 365. Everything else was ok & in normal range

Alt @ 57 is not the end of the world
Thats a very mild rise

I dunno about the others

worldwidetravel2017 · 07/12/2023 10:04

Ask 4 chlorestrol and diabeties test too

spiderleggings · 07/12/2023 10:04

I had this when I was about 1 stone overweight. I was just told that a fatty liver is just the same as any other excess fat in your body

I lost the weight and it's completely reversed it. You don't need a specific extreme diet, whatever works for you

BIWI · 07/12/2023 10:05

If you hardly drink, then it will be non-alcoholic fatty liver. The best way to deal with this is to lose weight and do more exercise.

Don't panic - easier said than done, I know! - at least it's been picked up and you will be given advice about the best way to deal with it in the future.

Livinghappy · 07/12/2023 10:09

Fatty liver is reversible and you could get some information/reassurance from the Liver trust helpline.

How old are you? There are other conditions that can cause raised lft but if you are overweight than fatty liver could be the issue. It is unfortunately quite common due to modern diets but can definitely be reversed with exercise and good diet.

DaftFlerken · 07/12/2023 10:13

I'm 51 & I am overweight but it's moving in the right direction.

I have had full LFT blood tests & tests for hepatitis etc which have all come back clear
cholesterol & diabetes are also fine. Vitamin D was in range but on the lower side
