Fatty Liver

DaftFlerken · 06/12/2023 15:13

Hi, has anyone else been diagnosed with a fatty liver? I have had a recent blood test showing high liver enzymes & the Dr has mentioned fatty liver & cirrhosis. I'm absolutely terrified, have been referred for a scan but goodness knows how long that's going to take.
Anyone else suffer with this & able to offer any advice, especially how to keep the awful anxiety under control that i've just been given a death sentence

She could be what they call TOFI - thin on the outside, fat on the inside.

Does she eat a lot of carbohydrate-heavy food?

Well done on the weight loss

Alt is the only liver blood linked 2 liver func , my consultant says.

Your alt can be up when u have a bug / virus/ infection

I had my fibro scan - too much fat in liver but no scaring

Gp has put in 4 more bloods

Mri in summer to check on liver

Good luck, I hope it all goes well :-)

Hopefully the next blood test will have improved for both of us.

I'm wondering if an ultrasound isn't very accurate & a fibroscan would be better but we'll wait & see what the blood says

Hi OP - I was diagnosed with NAFLD a couple of years ago. My liver function numbers (via blood test) were fine, but ultrasound showed enlarged liver which was confirmed by fibroscan.

The liver specialist said the best thing to do is lose weight. I've since joined a Facebook group which is helpful as it shares meal ideas and the latest research.

I think the key here is to catch it before it gets worse, which it sounds like you have done.

Good luck.

DaftFlerken · 29/01/2024 12:21

@Gangshow - did you have any symptoms?

1 in 3 people have fatty liver

DaftFlerken · 29/01/2024 12:21

@Gangshow - did you have any symptoms?

Not really. I had an ultrasound as I felt bloated (& was worried about ovarian cancer as it was around the time of an OC awareness campaign) but otherwise nothing.

I also had bloating with my fatty liver
And i also got them to rule out ovarian cancer b4

Not having a great time with this one. After being told that my Ultrasound looked fine I have had bloods repeated & they are worse than before, I have had no alcohol since NYE, have been eating healthy, going to the gym 3 times a week and have lost 14ibs this year. So worrying as I was honestly expecting an improvement in the results.

Now absolutely in bits as I don't know how to stop my self getting worse & can't get a DR's appointment for 3 weeks. I have been referred to a hepatologist but when I called just before Christmas they told me they are currently booking referrals from July/August

Gangshow · 23/02/2024 11:52

You're doing all the right things OP. When I saw a hepatologist he said all I could do was lose weight and exercise more to improve it.

I've read since that diet changes like cutting out sugar and ultra processed food can help.

Keep doing what you're doing.

Livinghappy · 23/02/2024 12:59

@DaftFlerken did all levels increase? Why not give the Liver trust a call as they can be reassuring.

A ultrasound will have shown anything sinister so you should be reassured by that.

Easier to say, try not to stress, you are doing all the right things to improve your health.

DaftFlerken · 23/02/2024 13:12

@Livinghappy thank you, that's a good idea to call the Liver Trust.

my ALT, AST & ALP all increased but platelets improved & GGT & most others have improved.

Reassuring that the ultrasound would pick up anything sinister, would it also pick up fibrosis ? Dr said there was no sign of fatty liver or cirrhosis

A fibro scan looks to see if scaring ...

Have u had 1 ?

DaftFlerken · 23/02/2024 19:47

Just an ultrasound so far. Referred to a heptologist but it’s approx 6 month wait

Kelsie78 · 23/02/2024 19:53

Milk thistle is very good for the liver.

Idreamofparis · 23/02/2024 20:43

I had my ultrasound today and have been told I have an extensive fatty liver. I have been waiting for the appointment since before Christmas. I got fed up of waiting and decided to go private, so glad I did. I'm so scared of the tests to come. Is private testing an option for you op?

DaftFlerken · 24/02/2024 06:47

It’s something I’m going to look into as the edit for a hepatology appointment is approx 6 months

OP posts:
worldwidetravel2017 · 24/02/2024 09:59

A private fibro scan could be fast and checks 4 scaring

I had an nhs1 in Jan

DaftFlerken · 29/05/2024 09:30

Update - my GP changed my specialist waiting list to urgent as bloods have been getting steadily worse in spite of no alcohol, exercise & weight loss.

Following countless blood tests, ultrasounds, a fibroscan (not good) & an MRI I have been diagnosed with an auto immune illness called PBC & blood tests show it is likely I also have auto immune hepatitis which will be confirmed by a liver biopsy.

Hopefully I haven't done too much damage already or what damage has been done I am able to improve as the medication gets everything under control. It is a relief to know that things are happening & we can (hopefully) stop more damage

Thanks to all for your support

I'm glad you got a diagnosis and are on a path to help manage your illness.
It's so helpful to know what the cause is so you can address the issues, get the correct medication and hopefully feel better soon, @DaftFlerken

Averagelife · 29/05/2024 12:35

Sorry to hear this OP but pleased that you’ve finally got a diagnosis and can start the correct treatment. Now you just have to let it sink in and be kind to yourself and know that you’re doing all the right things.
