Dribbling

OneFrenchEgg · 30/11/2023 10:37

About six weeks ago I was talking and felt coffee dribble out of my mouth. I was embarrassed but kind of didn't think much of it. It's happening a lot now. Both sides and it feels sore in the corners. I'm 50 and my mouth droops. I think it's caused the soreness and bit visa versa - I've had angular chellitis before. What to do????

Go and see a doctor?

OneFrenchEgg · 30/11/2023 10:40

Yes done that and got cream for AC just wondering if anyone had any thoughts - is it a cosmetic thing ?

PickleSmith · 30/11/2023 10:44

Well, the obvious thing to do is to see a doctor - easier said than done I know but nobody here can diagnose you.

Could be Bells Palsy - but that's usually one side. But seek medical attention

nottaotter · 30/11/2023 10:49

I would see a doctor with an urgent appointment, I don't think this is normal. AC can be painful but I wouldn't have thought it causes dribbling, is the droop a new thing?

OneFrenchEgg · 30/11/2023 10:53

I was wondering if it was a cosmetic thing. I think the droop is more age related. I'm just a bit lost really. The AC is caused by the wet, I think.

It's just very embarrassing, I'm constantly patting my face with tissue

OP posts:
OneFrenchEgg · 30/11/2023 10:54

^when drinking.

OP posts:
OneFrenchEgg · 10/12/2023 11:48

I'm just bumping this as I don't know what to do.
Every time I drink from a cup or mug it leaks out the corners and I have to pat my face. I do have very downturned corners.
Is it cosmetic that I need - Botox and filler come up a bit when I google. The corners are sore now and I'm using a cream from the GP.
It's just been quite a sudden one day it happened thing. Even when talking now I sometimes notice it.

Your mouth looks completely normal. When you drink is the liquid kept back in your mouth with your tongue coming up to the roof of your mouth? If that makes sense?

OneFrenchEgg · 10/12/2023 17:55

I think so. It just leaks out the sides. Most of it is swallowed.

Why don't you know what to do? What exactly do you want people to say? You need to see a doctor and ask their professional opinion.

I don't mean to sound harsh but there's no other advice really

whitesnowredberry · 10/12/2023 19:44

You need someone to take a solid case history and do a full cranial nerve exam to rule out lots of different conditions. Bilateral drooling with sudden onset is not normal. Please go and see your GP.

Because I feel like it isn't a GP thing? Like maybe it's age or something? I don't know. I think they will just say it's not medical and I need to live with it. I've tried the AC cream but I think it's caused by the drooling not the other way round.

Thank you I just worry they will think it's something I have to put up with

This. Just make an appt, the doctor needs to rule out some causes of this

nottaotter · 10/12/2023 21:42

@OneFrenchEgg I don't think its normal, I think you should def go to the doctor. Im sure they will take you seriously .

TheHeadOfTheHouse · 10/12/2023 21:46

I don’t think it’s an age thing, I’ve worked in many care homes and haven’t come across this.

You need to go back to your GP

OneFrenchEgg · 10/12/2023 21:54

I thought it was maybe where my mouth turns down. It's horrible though I'm really self conscious and beginning to be stressed about drinking. Really sore corners but that has come after I noticed it. I think it might be age and sagging.
I will try the GP again but I think they will think I'm just making it up or being weird

OP posts:
whitesnowredberry · 10/12/2023 22:25

The muscle around your mouth doesn't just start sagging and drooping for no reason (not unless you've had really dodgy Botox) and prevent full lip closure. That's not a thing. Seriously - you need to have a proper cranial nerve exam. I'm a swallowing specialist SLT - please go and see a doctor in the flesh.

OneFrenchEgg · 11/12/2023 06:52

Thank you I will do. Just last time I was given cream for AC. Which I didn't have, just sore corners due to the dribbling of liquid. It started really randomly when I was talking to a friend.

OP posts:
whitesnowredberry · 11/12/2023 06:59

If you're saying you have had the AC for 6 weeks and the sores are so bad, you can't keep the liquid in your mouth and hence the dribbling, then yes - you probably just need the cream.

But your OP didn't sound like that was what was happening - you said you'd had 6 weeks of bilateral dribbling and that you'd had AC before, not that you had it now?

OneFrenchEgg · 11/12/2023 07:05

Yes - my corners are sore now because of the dribbling but in the photo it doesn't look like AC. There was nothing 'wrong' visibly and no soreness and one day I started having dribbling when I drank - like after I need to pay my edges of my mouth, and it dribbles. Sometimes when I'm talking now.

WonderingWanda · 11/12/2023 07:12

When you were prescribed the cream for the ac did you make it clear you were concerned about the dribbling or did you just ask about the sore corners of your mouth. It sounds like the gp just went for a quick fix. It's clear from the replies on here that the dribbling is not a normal part of getting old op and I would urge you to go back to the gp and tell them you are actually very concerned about the dribbling because its happening all the time now.

OneFrenchEgg · 11/12/2023 08:30

Thank you yes I think that's what happened. It's just so random that I'm a bit stressed about the idea of the Gp, I feel like they won't help which I've why I've kind of thought about alternatives.
Definitely no AC/soreness before the dribbling. That's happening now but as a result of having wet mouth corners a lot.

@OneFrenchEgg did you see a GP about this? what was the answer?
came across your thread googling for elderly relative with same issue.
