DS had to use a Neilmed device after extensive nose surgery. As he had internal stitches his surgeon advised using freshly boiled water and making up a three parts salt to one part bicarbonate of soda in a clean container. I used to boil kettle and make a cuppa. Allow the remaining boiled water to cool, fill the neilmed to the line and add one teaspoon of the salt mix. Make sure the water isn't too hot before rinsing the nose.

It's not pleasant and the discharge can be grim but it is effective

Load of nonsense PPS saying you have to use cool boiled water.

No you don't.

We use them all the time when we have colds or sinus problems
We use cosy water from the tap with a couple of teaspoons of salt. Works a treat!

The reason for using cooled boiled water is that there can be potentially harmful organisms in tap water that can actually be fatal if an infection develops in your sinuses.
They are easily killed by stomach acid so obviously fine to drink, but there's nothing to stop them multiplying in a sinus cavity.
It's a rare complication but personally I wouldn't risk it.

Another vote for the Neilmed one, the squeezy bottle means that it properly scooshes up into your sinuses whereas a passive neti pot only really (in my experience) goes up one nostril and down the other

Sorry I know this post is old. I had sinus surgery and am using neil med. I let the water cool down in the kettle. It takes ages as I fill it quite high as I use the water to clean it after. Ive got to do ir for 6 weeks. Im just really scared using them as I have read about the serious things can get. Everytime I put water in the kettle some splashes on the exterior spout and im ao paranoid as it said that any splashes can comtinainte it and lead to amebo. Now I feel like im constantly looking at the kettle spout paranoid that some will get in the bottle when I pour the kettle down.

I have a neti pot but it'd a faff. More expensive but I just get the spray bottles.

Sterimar is quite powerful and you don't really have to insert it into the nostril for that reason.

Neilmed is good but not as powerful so need to insert otherwise it would miss.

I also use wet cotton wool after to help clean inside the nose, as you blow the nose and it feels like snot gets stuck.

There's also a nasogel which can help if the nostril starts to feel drier and itchy.

Neilmed is good
