Colonoscopy & Breastfeeding

Hi, I’ve had a positive FIT test so been referred on the 2 week wait for a colonoscopy. I have a 9m old who breastfeeds a lot during the day and night. I’m so worried about the meds transferring to my milk. Has anyone been through this? I’m also terrified of what they may find 😢

Hi, I haven’t been through a colonoscopy but always found the breastfeeding network really helpful when I had queries about drugs/procedures and breastfeeding. Here’s the link to their colonoscopy fact sheet, you can also ring them if you want to discuss it more: https://www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/factsheet/colonoscopy/
Good luck and I hope they don’t find anything nasty 🤞🏼

Look up the Wendy jones network it's a very useful site about what can be used while breastfeeding.

You can opt to have no sedation for the colonoscopy, iv done it a few times without as I'm always awake with it and it's fine and the whole procedure is very quick! X

Afteropening · 12/11/2023 07:11

Absolutely loads of reasons why positive FIT and vast majority are innocuous

don’t worry

Autumn1990 · 12/11/2023 07:13

I’ve breast fed and had a colonoscopy. At first they were really unhelpful but after they had checked with a pharmacist the meds and sedation were fine with bf. They also gave me an appointment first thing to limit the time I had to fast. I was diagnosed with an ibd and still bf on the meds.

Mummyme87 · 12/11/2023 07:39

There are very few drugs that are unsafe whilst breastfeeding, and drugs used for colonoscopy are also fine

C1239 · 12/11/2023 08:16

Good luck OP, I have a friend going through similar at the moment and I’m trying to help her stay calm. I hope you have some support too. What symptoms do you have? For those who have had a colonoscopy before after a positive FIT test what have they found that isn’t too sinister?

MrsMCtobe · 12/11/2023 10:06

Thank you so much

Thank you so much. I’ve been considering going without medication but worrying they won’t be able to do it properly?

Thank you so much, there seems to be so much conflicting information out there

Thank you so much, sorry yo hear your friend is also going through this. Really hope she’s ok. Does she have a date for the procedure? I’m still waiting

On mumsnet and google, yes.

speak to your HCP

C1239 · 12/11/2023 11:51

No she doesn’t have a date yet, she was having constipation for a while so went to the doctors who did full bloods and examination both were fine, she was given medication to help the constipation which helped but it was quite a lot of diarhea (sorry for the info) and she can feel some kind of blockage so she’s gone back to the doctor and pushed for further tests, and they want to do a colonoscopy. She’s concerned and also has lost about half a stone but she thinks it could be due to how many times the medication made her go to the toilet recently?

HBZ287 · 12/11/2023 20:11

I’ve had a colonoscopy without any pain relief or sedation as I was breastfeeding. I was offered gas and air but that makes me vomit so I declined. It was fine (if a bit uncomfortable). And the bonus of being able to leave straight afterwards and back to my baby was great. Others had to wait on the ward to feel well enough. I was cannulated in case I decided I needed drugs during the procedure. Maybe try starting without but with the option there?

MrsMCtobe · 13/11/2023 05:16

Thank you so much, I’m going to call them today to see what options there are

@C1239 mine was a large bowel polyp, pre-cancerous but not actually cancerous. So great news and it was removed successfully.

Im currently on annual colonoscopy to check no more appear, then will go to 3-yearly once consultant is happy.

I am 34 for reference, so this was considered unusual. Your friend is doing the right thing getting checked out.

Theres so many things it can be, most of which will be benign or treatable.

You sound a great friend

I also BF still, regards the medication I was advised they are all fine.

I did one with sedation, two with gas and air. No effect on baby or milk

Best of luck OP

MrsMCtobe · 13/11/2023 06:18

Thank you so much. Please could I ask what symptom you had? I’m driving myself crazy

OP posts:
CatchHimDerry · 13/11/2023 07:38

Hi @MrsMCtobe

My only real symptom was bleeding, very obviously so, for years!
Not constant, on and off with bowel movements.
But very obviously there. And it would return like every few weeks.

As polyp got bigger this got worse.
The last straw was got campylobacter and the bleeding was unreal. I thought my time had come.
It was an A&E job so they did a contrast CT and pulled me forward on the waiting list for cams.

CT scan showed inflamed bowel (pancolitis) from that, and they wondered if it was perhaps an IBD but colonoscopy is the only way for a proper look in there.
Nothing on surrounding organs on CT, so I consoled myself that if it was going to be cancer at least it hadn’t spread.

Cam found it, huge thing! Been there for years pestering me

Other than the blood I can’t say there was any other obvious symptoms.
Thinking back on it I could possibly have felt it, kind of like it was in the way with bowel movements.

But no obvious diarrhoea or constipation that couldn’t have been put down to normal everyday changes. No weight change.

My aunty has also just had her cameras finally. She didn’t have bleeding but lots of pains and aches, always one or the other with constipation or diarrhoea etc.

For her it’s polyps and severe diverticular disease, she is older than me at 60+, so this is more likely at her age.

Try not to worry! I know it’s so hard but you are now in the best hands and they are going to find out what’s going on and treat you.

Best of luck x

I wouldn't go without sedation if I were you. I found colonoscopy pretty uncomfortable even with it. I think it's a pretty small dose and is unlikely to affect breastfeeding.

Also found it uncomfortable at times
Although found the prep worse than the procedure..
Had light sedation but watched on the monitor

icclemunchy · 13/11/2023 10:15

Don't be surprised if your HCP says you have to not bf OP. Dr's In general know very little about bf and even less about drugs in bf so default to no.

Contact the bfn's drugs and bf network. They're all qualified pharmacists and will be able to tell you if the drugs are safe (very very few aren't BTW, and those that aren't are things like chemo) but more importantly why they're safe.

Good luck and hopefully it's something nice and easy to sort

CatchHimDerry · 13/11/2023 10:15

@worldwidetravel2017 yes same I don’t think it’s common.
They were very surprised when they saw it, it started off as 30mm and by time of removal it was 50mm size.

And mine must have been there a while I’d had bleeding since around 26 years old.
No risk factors, no family history.

Guess sometimes these things just happen!

I tell all my friends now, forget “too young” if something is up please go seek help

Did u ever have glandular fever ??

I had glandular fever in 2022

Apparently there's often a link

Also bowel cancer history in my immediate fam

One of my polyps was sessile serated which statistically puts me @ higher risk 4 bad times in future
