Hi,

my child developed this rash last night all over her elbows, feet & bottom area. We saw the Doctor today and they said it wasn’t meningitis rash, however I’m still not satisfied to what it is. I was told it’s a Non Specific Viral Rash. It just looks so sore but my child is generally well in herself, currently has Tonsillitis & had high temperature for 3 days prior to this rash.

Have you tried an antihistamine ?

DustyLee123 · 04/11/2023 15:33

I think covid can sometimes present with a rash in kids.

Shopperholic2023 · 04/11/2023 15:36

I haven’t tried antihistamine. Unsure if he had covid as we didn’t do a test.

Are they on an antibiotic for tonsillitis? Antibiotics can cause rashes of you are allergic to them.
Otherwise if try something like loratadine antihistamine syrup if it's itchy/ irritating

anyolddinosaur · 04/11/2023 15:54

Try antihistamine but also do a covid test.

Hand foot and mouth? My dc’s started with spots on the buttocks.

dollybird · 04/11/2023 16:04

It doesn't look quite the same, and I don't think the rash would normally be on the elbows, but my DD had HSP after having tonsillitis. www.nhs.uk/conditions/henoch-schonlein-purpura-hsp/

Shopperholic2023 · 04/11/2023 16:11

I’ve now given her Cetirizine. She has Tonsilitis quite regularly and never had a rash like this. She’s feeling well in herself and is doing usual activities m. Appetite is abit down but that’s expected with Tonsilitis.

Do they need treatment for this if it is? The rash description sounds like hers.

Hand foot and mouth? My dc’s started with spots on the buttocks.

So the Dr we spoke to over the phone on Wednesday said she thinks it’s HFM as there was a spot in her inner cheek when I sent photos of the tonsils.
when I showed another dr face to face today he said it’s not HFM.

It looks like a reaction I had to a capsule form of Tesco ibuprofen. Very itchy. It’s caused by the gel the capsule is made from x

Now this is making me think it could be a reaction to Ibuprofen I gave him on Thursday night & since which is not Nurofen. Normally I always use Nurofen but didn’t have any left so used the one the Dr prescribed.

Was the ibuprofen liquid in a capsule? That’s what brought me up in the rash. Harmless but bloody itchy. Mainly on arms. Check the packaging to see what the capsule is made of x

Shopperholic2023 · 04/11/2023 16:55

No it was a liquid form for kids. Her spots aren’t itchy or painful

Now she’s complaining of pain in her knee & got off the sofa nearly stumbling. Now I’m getting worried it’s not just a ‘non specific viral rash’

It does look like a rash DD had when she had an allergic reaction to Penicillin. Her hands and feet and eventually legs became quite swollen with it too.

Shopperholic2023 · 04/11/2023 21:10

Had you DD had penicillin prior to that? As my DD has and she’s never had a reaction.

Now I’m thinking this after reading into it. She’s had sever leg & arm pain all night & woken up with swelling around her eyes. I’m on my way to see the Dr. Was there any treatment for this with your DD?

You can develop an allergy to penicillin at any stage in life even if you’ve had penicillin before.

But as someone who had a deadly allergy to Penicillin I’d say that rash isn’t down to Penicillin.

I hope your child feels better soon.

One of the coxsackle virus type illnesses cases a sore throat with tonsil issues and causes a rash like this. I can’t remember the name unfortunately.
Have a look online for different strains. It seems to fit the symptoms you described.
I have similar recently and was unable to get a GP appointment so I spoke to my nurse practitioner friend who explain this to me. She said it wil run its course. I’m fully recovered now.

Blanketpolicy · 05/11/2023 15:03

ds(19) had something similar in his early teens - all over back, chest, arms down to his ankles. Dry, warm and itchy and spreading - although I can't remember him mentioning joint pain. Went to docs and they advised anti-histamines and gave some cream to relive the itching and to come back if it got worse. We racked our brains to work out if anything changed or what it could be - washing powder, shower gel, bed bugs, food.

Never got to the bottom of it, it got more intense and then it disappeared in a week-10 days and never came back so assume it was a virus of some sort.

Hope it clears up soon.

So sorry I didn't reply earlier. She was diagnosed at a Saturday GP clinic at the hospital as I had called 111 the night before worrying it was meningitis. They admitted her onto the day ward to do a blood test (I can't remember what they were testing for). She had very bad pain in her legs and struggled to walk. She didn't have any treatment after she was discharged, but had to do regular wee tests for quite a while afterwards. It can cause stomach issues, and she was very sick for about a week afterwards, although the GP said it wasn't linked 🙄

Hope you get some answers for your DC soon.

Viral rashes are very common. Keep temperature down with Calpol and cool clothing.
