Pulling your own teeth out

XenoBitch · 30/10/2023 23:26

Has anyone done this?

I don't meet the 111 threshold for treatment.

I am not in pain and there is not huge swelling. I just have a tooth that has twisted out of position (and according to my pre-Covid NHS dentist... could be perio or a a tumour). It is now sticking out of my mouth... I have a lisp, I drool, my love life is affected. I can't swish mouthwash about anymore as the tooth catches the inside of my mouth.
It is loose anyway.. I just want to pull it out.

What is the threshold for treatment if that isn't? It sounds awful. 😢

AllWeWantToDo · 31/10/2023 00:09

I'm having horrendous trouble with my teeth, had an assess during lock down and no one would see me, it did that twisting thing in the end and after a while dropped out. Managed to see the dentist, told to brush my teeth 4 times a day and come back in 4 months. Then she cancelled 4 appointments in a row and them left the practice so don't have a dentist anymore

I think I'm going to end up with no teeth

111 wont consider it an emergency unless you have massive facial swelling or have been eating lots of painkillers for ages.

God,that's awful, they should be ashamed of themselves. Hope you manage to get something sorted .

Chowtime · 31/10/2023 00:11

Can't you just go private? NHS only pays 25% of the cost anyway, the patient pays the other 75%.

Hopskiplou · 31/10/2023 00:13

It will fall out on its own eventually but I’d beg or borrow to see a private dentist (£120 here for emergency appt for an abscess, might be cheaper if not needed same day) and have it pulled. Also have an X-ray done to see what’s going on.

My sole income is UC. I should be entitled to NHS dentistry.
No NHS dentists where I live at all.

Can you lie and say you're in pain and taking pain killers?

That is what I am thinking of doing..

But all the reviews for the dentist I am looking at are terrible (as in, they are butchers)

Lie
Tell 111 you are in significant pain
How would they know otherwise

TheShellBeach · 31/10/2023 00:24

If it's almost falling out surely even a butcher of a dentist will be capable of taking it out.

Mind you, if it was me, I'd just pull it out myself.

My tooth is very much still alive, nerve and all.

I think i will have to get very very drunk and do the Beano thing of attaching a string to a door and slamming it shut.

Probably, but here they'll charge the op up to 400 for the privilege, and that's just the extraction. If op is on UC she may not be able to afford upwards of £500

I am on UC. Cost of Living payment due soon

I have booked an appointment (via online) with a dentist for Thursday.
Is £25 and then treatment after. Lets see what happens. I am shitting myself.

I work in multiple dental practices and none would be even £200 privately - some more like £130 for the same day extraction and referral if it needs looking at - where are you based? And tbh most dentists have bad reviews - hard to get good reviews tbh. But also MOST dentists are lovely and competent and used to nervous patients

Thanks. I am based in Wiltshire.
This one is £25 for a consult, and then from £85 for an extraction. I think mine will be simple... I mean if it was not for nerves, I could pull it out myself.

I just worry that they will say I need some complicated things to occur first. Like an xray and then loads of tests.
Can I say I just want the tooth pulled? I don't care what is going on behind the scenes. I just want it gone.

You said it could be a tumour pushing your tooth out?
Is this not something a dental hospital should be seeing asap?!
I would get to dental hospital by telling NHS 24 you are in a lot of pain and get them to pull your tooth and refer you on

I have tried and failed. Not in pain and no life threatening swelling. 111 don't care.
No dental hospital near me, and the closest one (50 miles), you need a 111 referral.
This had been going on for a long time!

OP posts:
misssunshine4040 · 31/10/2023 02:09

I'm so sorry this is awful
I would 100% lie about the pain. I would tell them it's got worse and painkillers are not touching it.
You need to be seen

Avocadoseed · 31/10/2023 02:13

Jesus Christ, pulling out your own tooth!

Just go private.

BananaHamster · 31/10/2023 02:14

I'd just lie and say your in agony, don't pull it out unless it's extremely wobbly you could end up breaking it into pieces and causing yourself a huge infection!

hellohellothere · 31/10/2023 02:20

This is one occasion I'd advise on lying.

With what money?

You do know that many millions can't afford private dental treatments? That many millions don't have access to £500 just like that to pay for emergencies.

Op has said she is gets UC but unless you don't work, you get no help with dental costs.

Ohnoooooooo · 31/10/2023 02:42

sounds awful - maybe you can put a mumsnet post asking if anyone knows any NHS dentists in your county? My cleaner was having trouble finding a local nhs dentist but I was persistent and found one for her and they saw the next day as an emergency.
