Pulling your own teeth out

XenoBitch · 30/10/2023 23:26

Has anyone done this?

I don't meet the 111 threshold for treatment.

I am not in pain and there is not huge swelling. I just have a tooth that has twisted out of position (and according to my pre-Covid NHS dentist... could be perio or a a tumour). It is now sticking out of my mouth... I have a lisp, I drool, my love life is affected. I can't swish mouthwash about anymore as the tooth catches the inside of my mouth.
It is loose anyway.. I just want to pull it out.

On this occasion I'd definitely lie about the pain. Good luck op Flowers

Fawbs89 · 31/10/2023 13:59

Why don't you just go to a private dentist?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 31/10/2023 14:17

Are people really so dense that they don't know how little money people on benefits receive?

I'm having my teeth cleaned next week and it's 75 quid, for a clean ffs!

VeridicalVagabond · 31/10/2023 14:38

I'm not normally one for lying to get what you want but dental care is abysmal in this country at present. Absolutely lie. Say you're in agony and downing painkillers like skittles.

Honestly, if it's alive pulling it yourself will be horrific. I've had one extraction without anaesthetic and I still have nightmares about it ten years later!

Absolutely, ring back and say it wasn't hurting but now you're in agony.

You poor thing, sounds awful. I'm pretty sure that they will need to X-ray before extraction so that the dentist can see the shape and positioning of the roots. I don't think an X-ray is very expensive and may be included in the price of the extraction. Good luck, I hope that you get sorted.

111 wont consider it an emergency unless you have massive facial swelling or have been eating lots of painkillers for ages.

Tell them you've been taking painkillers? I'm norally absolutely against lying but this situation is a disgrace.

I'm so sorry it is this shit.

(Thanks Tories)

Why don't you just go to a private dentist?

Because it costs too much money?

Really unkind post from you @Fawbs89

Avocadoseed · 31/10/2023 02:13

Jesus Christ, pulling out your own tooth!

Just go private.

Unkind post @Avocadoseed

Do you understand private dentistry costs money? Do you understand not everyone has money?

fearfuloffluff · 31/10/2023 16:06

You need to find out how much a private extraction would cost and see if there's anyway you could get that money together - can you borrow from someone, sell something, get some shifts working in a pub or do babysitting etc?

Tbh if you try to do it diy then you might end up needing further dentistry anyway, and you'd be back to square one.

2PintsOfCidernaBagofCrisps · 31/10/2023 16:07

Why not just tell 111 that you're popping paracetamol like smarties because of the pain? The fact that you may have a higher pain threshold than others shouldn't be preventing you accessing what most would consider emergency treatment. On this occasion, I would be a little looser with the facts and get it sorted ASAP.

fearfuloffluff · 31/10/2023 16:08

You could also try your mp - probably tory in Wiltshire and responsible for the absolute rotting of public services, but can't hurt.

£35 at my dentist for an xray

DaisyStarburst · 31/10/2023 16:48

I recently had to pay £300 for x ray and extraction privately, no NHS dentists here. It's terrible.

BananaHamster · 31/10/2023 02:14

I'd just lie and say your in agony, don't pull it out unless it's extremely wobbly you could end up breaking it into pieces and causing yourself a huge infection!

My thoughts. Tell them you are in unbearable pain.
If this is the state of the country, this is absolutely terrible!!!!!

SecondUsername4me · 31/10/2023 17:01

It's fucking ridiculous that you could get nhs treatment at zero cost to you for every other thing broken/painful on your person, but not the teeth.

XenoBitch · 02/11/2023 15:48

Just an update. I went to a dentist today. It was private, but the cheapest in my area. I could see why the reviews were bad as all the staff were miserable and I was not put at ease at all.

Anyway, my dodgy tooth will be being removed, along with another that has a failed root canal (it lasted 13 years so not too bad). I need a few other things doing but removing infection etc is more important. This will be in a week's time after a course of antibiotics.

Thanks everyone for the comments and suggestions. To the less helpful.... read the room next time, eh.
