Do remember that the diseases themselves have potentially alarming side effects

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 23/10/2023 19:26

Vaccinations have been used for years and years and in the majority safe. Measles, whooping cough etc...... have killed children a lot more than vaccinations.

It is a no brainer to me, and it only seems privileged countries that have this anti vax theory. Third world countries would do anything to get their hands on these vaccinations that first world countries have. There children are dying from diseases that we had almost eradicated here through vaccination programmes, and that is now waning due to people listening to anti vax conspiracies.

Snugglewuggle25 · 26/10/2023 21:11

I have 4 kids. The first 3 I had all immunisations, 2 of them 3 had all up to their TB. My 3rd was absent from school and never got hers. My youngest only had her baby immunisation but nothing else. She's ill as often as the rest, nothing out of the ordinary. Also may I add my girls did not receive the HPV vaccine either. No flu or covid jabs.

Vaccination

I never vaccinated mine and I wasn’t vaccinated as a child and we have suffered no consequences as a result. I come from a family of doctors and my sister is a virologist so I had lots of medical and scientific advice and understanding before making my decisions.

I think it’s a very personal choice and either option can come with potential side effects and risks. We have all caught covid also and been completely fine. We suffered very mild symptoms.

I did once get pushed to have the flu jab by a nurse. I was pregnant at the time and word for word she told me I was an irresponsible mum if I didn’t get it. I cried a lot (and reported her) but got the vaccine against my wishes and I fell unconscious at the appointment. Turns out I am extraordinarily allergic to it (I have a lot of serious allergies to other medications too and so does my mum and grandma). For me it isn’t worth the risk but you need to really weigh up your pros/cons.

I mean the truth is you could vaccinate and it be ineffective if the child catches said illness - or it could help but you will never really know and I would say you have to go with your gut feeling. You know best.

im not anti vax, but I do believe people have the right to make their own choices. If I had had mine when I was a baby I could have potentially had a serious reaction like I did as an adult.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 26/10/2023 21:29

Remember it's not just a personal choice. Your choice will also affect anyone else your unvaccinated child comes into contact with.

And yes, I'm judging you. It's not a hard decision, it's an easy one. Not vaccinating your child is stupid and selfish.

MadamVastra · 26/10/2023 21:32

@Doubleespresso23

you're not anti vax?

ok then 🙄

Deathbyfluffy · 26/10/2023 21:35

It's not a hard choice, it's in fact very simple - don't fall for the wibble nonsense about vaccines you see plastered all over Facebook.
They're safe, overall massively beneficial and anyone that chooses not to only has themselves to blame if their child gets ill with a preventable disease.

Cannas · 26/10/2023 21:35

There was no measles vaccine when I was a child. That's why I've been partially deaf all my life. I was lucky though.
Of course not every unvaccinated child will get measles, or worse, and those that do will not all die. But some will. Also when the percentage of unvaccinated children drops below a certain level (around 95%) then the disease gets a hold in the whole community.

bakewellbride · 26/10/2023 21:39

Please get all the vaccines for your child. There is literally no downside other than your child might cry for 1-2 mins. Dh is a paramedic and in his career has gone to so many unvaccinated children who suffer needlessly through the stupidity of parents.

Please protect your child from deadly diseases.

bakewellbride · 26/10/2023 21:47

@MadamVastra me too. And the whole 'I haven't had any jabs and I'm ok!' argument is alarming too. You could also cross a busy main road blindfolded and make it to the other side ok, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea!

For crying out loud.

Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 · 26/10/2023 21:55

I wouldn't leave my dog unvaccinated let alone my children .

Shortkiwi · 26/10/2023 21:59

@Doubleespresso23 surely the whole point of vaccination is to prevent a child developing the said illness? They are effective!

@wyse - heartbreaking words by Road Dahl.

As a paediatric nurse (who worked in the 80s) I’ve witnessed the horrendous complications of whooping cough and measles and had a child die in front of me from meningitis.
For those not getting vaccinated it’s fortunate that the majority do as then they can rely on herd immunity. However, if optimum uptake falls then diseases return as we saw with the Andrew Wakefield/MMR fiasco.
One very effective vaccine is HPV. It could be that HPV and cervical cancer could be eradicated in the future.

MBL · 26/10/2023 22:12

I wasn't vaccinated as a child and had these illnesses. I was very unwell with measles and whooping cough. Measles can be very serious and can cause blindness (and deafness).

I have vaccinated my children.

Ivanbondar · 16/01/2024 21:54

If a child gets a vaccine are they not protected against any child who is not vaccinated?

Ivanbondar · 16/01/2024 21:54

Well yes, the vaccine can't be 100% effective but most are pretty close, but we need almost all to be vaccinated for the kids who can't be because of other health conditions. And also other people in society who are vulnerable

CrunchyCarrot · 17/01/2024 07:40

Please tell me OP that by now you've made the decision to vaccinate your children. There are some very nasty and serious illnesses that can be protected against. Particularly (but not limited to) measles and polio. Yes polio is still a thing and you don't want your child catching that.

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 17/01/2024 07:44

I’m incredulous that people think this is a hard choice. It’s the easiest choice you have to make as a parent! Why would you leave your child vulnerable to deadly diseases that used to kill and now don’t due to modern science?

ToastOfBristol · 17/01/2024 07:46

We're vaccinated (after a huge amount of research) for the serious illnesses, meningitis, polio, measles etc but I really wouldn't bother with the flu or covid jabs - pretty much completely unnecessary for otherwise healthy people!

So if the vaccines work how they say they do..Why has my child after 3 doses of 6in1 vaccine Infanrix hexa build up any immunity against them disease? He is 3 and has no antibodies for tetanus, whooping cough or the other diseases. How is that possible after 3 vaccinations ? The vaccine should last atleast 5 years..

Wishiwasatailor · 02/09/2025 00:15

@NellyMatrass is there a reason why you got the antibody titres?

NellyMatrass · 02/09/2025 00:32

Wishiwasatailor · 02/09/2025 00:15

@NellyMatrass is there a reason why you got the antibody titres?

Yes, as my first born who was 14 months at the time had 3 seizures in 12 hours and wouldn't wake up for the next 24 hours and completely forgot everything after them seizures happened. He was hospitalised a week, the specialists in Birmingham children's hospital didint understand or have a clue what was happening. He's had many tests not one showed anything. It has happened after Prevenar vaccine. Since then im very cautious so instead of just vaccinating im doing blood tests to see what needs to be done and what not. But now that I have actually seen that there is no immunity after 3 vaccined of hexa im not really sure what to believe .
