Does the pill/ any hormonal stuff work?

That's interesting, rebelmum.

I've tried tranexamic acid and mooncups, but neither make any difference to my heavy bleeding. I don't think exercise makes any difference, either. What is TCM?

Traditional Chinese Medicine, there is a college on my doorstep and I have some of the best doctors in the country, some are also medical doctors too. I can't recommend it enough, solved my problems and completely turned my health around.

I think this thread has almost put me off the coil - with stories about it coming out etc, but it does sound tempting to have less heavy periods and to feel normal again. It is nice to read here about other women having the same problems as myself, as I couldn't believe anyone else could have periods as heavy as me (not that I'm in competition!). I don't know why I feel squeamish about the coil as I have given birth to 2 babies! I guess a little pain is worth it. But I do still worry as I have heard that the hormones in it can increase depression - has anyone had this side effect?

I refused the coil and am au naturel with the contraception, the last thing I want is to dick about with my hormones after I have managed to get everything ticking over on an even keel -there are various methods you can use to predict fertile times. You need to be fairly regular though. My GP uses natural methods too, I pleaded with him for a more natural alternative that is in tune with your body.

Oh thanks, rebelmum! That's really interesting.

Which pill brands have you tried? My impression from friends is that the 3rd generation ones that are considered safe even for smokers etc screw up your moods a lot more than the older 2nd gen ones, which they are reluctant to prescribe if you are overweight or smoke.

Femodene (a 2nd gen one) worked wonderfully for me. Although ironically my periods then got really light when I stopped it 10 years later, but given I had no periods at all for 6 months before finding I was pregnant, that probably doesn't mean much. My gynaecologist assured me that ovulation and periods should return within 3 months of stopping the pill, and if not it's something else, not the pill.

Frankie3

I have had 3 children {big 10 pounders} and still have a very low pain threshold......{I had lots of gas and air,pethidine....epidural with my last....which ended in emergency section}
After suffering with PND with my last 2 babies,I was worried about using the coil, but honestly....my periods were just p me off so much, tranexamic acid was giving me severe pains in my legs ......I really had had enough and was going to demand a hysterectomy!!! I know I'd have been told to calm down, but I really was desperate.......
my Mum recommended the Mirena coil and now I find many of my friends have it!!
I can honestly say it hasnt made much difference to my PMT......I have always been highly strung!!!
If your periods really start to get you down and you are at the end of your tether, give the Mirena a go.......
I read all the horror stories and it nearly put me off....but the thought of constantly flooding and being anaemic again made me decide once and for all.
its your decision though,I,m sure you,ll find what suits you.

agnus castus and milk thistle will reduce heavy periods without affecting fertility, go see a herbalist (NIMH.org.uk for your nearest one) or your local health shop if they have a qualified person in store

Bridie3 · 03/08/2008 18:38

That's interesting, misi. Thanks.

I wish I,d have took your advice about the agnus castus last year....

My 2nd Mirena FELL OUT!!! all my problems came back, severe PMT,Flooding for 3 weeks! plus chronic breast pain and anaemia again.
I sank into deep depression, until I came across the 'Powersurge' website.....
agnus castus kept cropping up.....
I started the highest dose allowed, 5 days ago and it is definitely working already...
my mood is calmer,I feel a bit more uplifted
and more energetic....ME? ENERGETIC??!!!
I havent cried this week....
If it lessens my period too,I will be jumping for joy

evenmoremiserablethanbefore · 07/06/2010 09:43

latest on Agnus castus

it worked!!
I,ve had 7 months with normal periods
my periods have been lasting for less than 5 days. The last few months they have been heavier and my breasts are sore,I,m moodier etc so I will start taking the Agnus Castus again and we,ll see.....
I think youre supposed to only take them for a few months at a time, which is what I did,but I,ve had a good break so feel fine about taking them again.
