Hi everyone

A bit of a random post but my anxiety is at it's all time peak right now

I'm due to get one wisdom tooth removed (Bottom right hand side) on Monday

I was just wondering if anyone has had any positive experiences or tips

So far I've only heard horror stories and it's only exacerbating my anxiety

Helpppp!

I had my bottom right wisdom tooth out six months ago and was terrified . A surgeon came into the practice and did mine , had a five minute chat beforehand about possible outcomes , and then closed my eyes trying not to panic . It was over with in no time and no pain at all . Afterwards I was given some gauzes to take home in case of post bleeding . I was lucky in that I only had a little blood from time to time for the next few hours . Oh and I’m not one for taking painkillers but I did take paracetamol for the first evening , not because I was in pain , but as a precaution and to get a good nights sleep . I hyped myself up so much beforehand and yet it was fine . You will be fine 🤗

Thank you so much! I'm glad to hear your experience was a positive one

Are you having it done at the dentist or at hospital under a general?

AcclimDD · 17/09/2023 11:08

Is it fully erupted?
Who is doing it and have they talked you through the procedure?
Does the dentist expect it to be simple forceps or a surgical procedure with bone removal and root division?
Are you having local anaesthetic alone or with IV sedation or is it under GA at a hospital?
All the above affect how things will likely go post-operatively.

AnonymousJM · 17/09/2023 12:36

@pecanpie101 Hi
I'm having it done at the dentist!

I had a perfectly good experience. The dentist talked me through it. I had a bit of a headache after but slept it off and had a paracetamol. Ate soft foods for the next two days.

AnonymousJM · 17/09/2023 12:44

@Fiery30
That's amazing
You had a good experience
I'm glad to hear it
I'm hoping it's the same for me

@AcclimDD

Hi there
So my tooth is actually decayed so that's why I needs to come out
The position of the tooth is absolutely fine
I'm getting it done at the dentist
They don't do sedation
I'm just nervous because my body doesn't react well to anaesthetic
I had to have three rounds just to get a filling done!

It was a walk in the park for me! I was honestly shitting myself beforehand, I was shaking in the chair. Mine too was decayed. I’d put it off for so long.

It was so easy. Barely felt the needles and it was out within a minute. That was last week and I’m pretty much healed, I’ve had minimal pain or swelling.
The fact it’s being done at your dentist is a good sign, means it’s a straightforward extraction.

Good luck, you’ll be so relieved once it’s done!

AnonymousJM · 17/09/2023 12:53

@HungryWisdom AMAZING
All these comments have really settled my nerves. Thank you so much for sharing

Had one out a few months ago under similar circumstances. Was so unexpectedly quick I didnt even notice and ended up asking "you mean it's out already"? Anesthetics have improved vastly in recent years, it's amazing.

I agree, I really thought that the entire side of my face would be numb and the thought of not having control scared me! But it was totally different to what I expected, bit of a tingly lip but zero pain, I was very impressed!

Honestly OP, you’ll be so proud of yourself once it’s done (I was!)
I’d spent years crapping myself with thoughts of it being pulled, it was easier than I could ever imagine. I would’ve hugged my dentist if I could.

Be brave 💪 you can do it!

Ice cream for dinner and NO drinking through straws!

AcclimDD · 17/09/2023 13:20

@AnonymousJM
Top tip-eat properly beforehand, 2 hours pre-appointment. Even if you're v nervous and have no appetite, very important to eat otherwise high chance of a faint on an empty stomach/high anxiety/local anaesthetic.

Secondly, remind the dentist beforehand that you need more LA than the average patient.

Thirdly, if it's fully erupted albeit it decayed and being done in your high street practice, the expectation will be that it won't be complicated.

Fourthly, get pain relief ready for afterwards and plenty of soft foods. It'll probably be sore for a few days 4/5 and then start to fade. Dry / infected sockets can happen and some factors make it more likely, but, usually the average patient will heal without any issues.

It'll be fine OP. Put one AirPod in and hold the nurses hand during the extraction. There'll be pressure and noises but should be no pain if LA is effective.

Good luck xx

August bank holiday weekend, I had an emergency appointment due to tooth pain. It showed a decaying wisdom tooth. They extracted it there and then, two injections, completely numb and they pulled it out in about 10 seconds.

A little tender afterwards, but nothing compared to the pain I had from the decaying hole! Glad I had it done.

Good luck, try not to worry x

chorusline79 · 17/09/2023 15:30

I was so anxious when I had mine out last year but it was absolutely fine. Was all over very quickly - I actually couldn't believe it was out already! Best thing I did - no more worry about infections and pain. A bit of a strange sensation but not painful or anywhere near as bad as I was imagining. Good luck and it will all be over soon!

Minglemangle007 · 17/09/2023 15:41

My wisdom tooth went so off the chart I needed a 2.5 hour operation and 2 days in hospital.

Was off painkillers within 24 hours and was pretty much eating normally, albeit carefully, from day 2.

Good luck!

BindyCeale · 18/09/2023 07:56

Wishing you luck @AnonymousJM

Hopefully you've not long to wait.

I've not had a wisdom tooth extracted, but I recently had a molar removed. I was crying and shaking for days before, when it came to it it was really easy and pain free. The tooth was out in under a minute.

chorusline79 · 18/09/2023 23:05

@AnonymousJM just wondering how you got on? Hope you are doing ok, and hope you heal well and quickly!

AnonymousJM · 19/09/2023 09:22

@chorusline79
Hi there
My gosh, unfortunately I had a horrific experience
Could pretty much feel the whole process
I had three rounds of anaesthetic
Each round required 4 injections in multiple places
So I was actually jabbed 12 times all together

Once the tooth was removed
It actually had an abscess right at the bottom of it
(Which I was fully unaware of)

That's why the anaesthetic wasn't working the way it should have
I was told it restricts it

Luckily my Mum came with me
And actually took my daughters home with her afterwards

So I'm pretty much bed bound at the moment
Taking it easy

In a lot of pain

But I know I'll feel better soon!

Thank you so much for asking

Oh no!! So sorry you’ve had such a rough time with it 😞

It’s all done now, lots of rest and recover. Wish it had gone smoother for you 💐

chorusline79 · 19/09/2023 17:24

@AnonymousJM oh I am so sorry to hear this, that sounds absolutely horrible. You rest up and hope you are feeling much better soon - well done, sounds like you were v brave to get through it!

@AnonymousJM did they not see the absess on the x Ray

AnonymousJM · 20/09/2023 09:36

@Deedoo

I had an X-ray done in May!
And it didn't show and abscess so unfortunately I don't know when the abscess formed but I've been dealing with it for a while clearly. Just bad luck I guess!
