Can anyone help - is this pityriasis rosea??

Developed this rash three weeks ago (after initial large patch on my thigh) - it spread like wildfire (despite religiously putting antifungal cream on the original patch three times a day as we initially thought ringworm) and is still spreading. It’s on my chest, torso, back, hips, buttocks, groin, upper thighs, neck, and armpits. I’ve had four different diagnoses (nurse and I initially thought ringworm then GP thought erythema multiforme, and other GP said hives which it defo isn’t), and last nurse practitioner I saw finally thought pityriasis rosea. The new patches are maddeningly itchy and hot, worse when I am hot or my clothes rubs against them. I’m on two types of antihistamine but not sure what cream to put on as I’m still panicking it’s ringworm tbh :( Some of the original ones do seem to have faded on their own. It’s driving me mad and I can’t concentrate on work etc. I’d love to see a dermatologist but this hasn’t been suggested and private ones not available until November. Help!! (PS sorry for gross pics 😩)

DD15 had this earlier in the year. It looks very much like it.

We saw the GP and they diagnosed Pityriasis Rosea straight away.

DD had, had a cold type illness a few weeks before the first rash started. Initially it was a few patches and then over a couple of days it just exploded everywhere.

She was given a body wash which she used a couple of times. The rash stayed for about 4 weeks and then pretty much disappeared suddenly over night. You'd have never known it had been there.

It's a very strange virus. It will go though in time.

Thanks Lindy2, that’s reassuring to hear - what body wash did she use??

I'm afraid I can't remember. It was just a gentle medicated body wash. I'll have a look to see if DD still has the bottle as she didn't use it all.

I think the GP prescribed it because DD has ASD and was getting a bit stressed about it. It helped her feel that something was being done and I think soothed the skin a bit. It doesn't need to be antibacterial as this is a viral rash.

Circassia · 03/09/2023 12:53

Thanks Lindy2, oh I can only imagine the stress of it for her - I’m finding it stressful and all-consuming at the mo - DH is driven mad by my obsessing!!

Definitely looks like it, I had it EVERYWHERE last year. GP told me nothing actually helps the rash go away, you can just treat the itching.
On the bright side, once I was fully covered in them and it seemed to have finished spreading over my body, it disappeared within about 2 days. Poof, gone - just dry patches left behind.
I don't know if it makes a difference, but I noticed more came out in the shower. It could speed up the process maybe?

Lindy2 · 03/09/2023 12:57

I think this was the body wash - Cetaphil.

It looks like you can buy it over the counter and Google says it's good for Pityriasis Rosea.

LoveStHelier · 03/09/2023 13:00

Yes I had it during the height of the pandemic. It lasted about 5 months and the doctor said it would last that long and ‘burn’ itself out. The itching and redness didn’t last that long thankfully. I used some dermatologic cream from boots. I can’t remember what it was sorry. It definitely helped. I also stopped using any scented bath products and just sensitive wash and cream.

LividHot · 03/09/2023 13:01

Sounds like it. I had it in pregnancy.

Shower with original head & shoulders shampoo. Not sure why but it helps.

Thanks so much!

Poor thing! My son had this. We used Nizoral Shampoo with 2% Ketoconazole and/or Selsun Gold shampoo. He had to wash his hair, then wash his body all over, leaving the suds on for at least three minutes, before washing off. Neither smell great, but the Nizoral isn’t as awful as Selsun Gold which has sulfur as it’s active ingredient. Anyhow the treatment was once a day for three days, then twice a week for a month. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this. It didn’t upset his skin at all. I would also suggest a sulfur cream for the lesions, but only apply for three days. (Also washing sheets, towels, clothes, etc in hot water and dry in the sun if you can.)

How strange. My 2yo has woken up with a very similar rash today. I was thinking ringworm but not sure. It looks identical to yours though!

@specialk9 - Regardless of advice above, I think you should take your baby to the doctor in case it’s indicative of an allergy or something…

ThePoshUns · 03/09/2023 14:00

It does look like it. My son gets recurring bouts of it and it was only a private dermatologist that diagnosed it in the end after trying all the products you mentioned.
Son ( aged 20) was prescribed this, it's v expensive but was the only thing that has worked.
Pitariasis is linked to tonsillitis, so as son is prone to that he normally gets a flare up after.

My DS had this We used Nizoral shampoo as a body wash which helped a lot
The rash did take a while to fade
You could try an antihistamine for the itching
Genetic cetirizine or Loratadine are cheap and easily available

wineymummy · 03/09/2023 14:24

If not then look at granuloma annulare. Looks like ringworm but is autoimmune not fungal. I have it on my feet but it doesn't itch, not sure if it itches for others tho.
