What will your daughter use when she starts her periods?

I don't think that I could have used a mooncup before having sex a lot frequently

So of course DD will have a mooncup when she is about 30, or 35?

TooTicky · 01/03/2008 22:41

Yes, I think mooncups come later but am not sure re eco disposables/washables. Obviously washables are preferable, but they are more hassle which she might not be ready for straight away.

glucose · 01/03/2008 22:41

well I suppose I will show her all options, but I would not expect her to use a mooncup or washable pad . I think it's a very personal choice. The moon cup still looks huge to me at the grand old age of 34, if you had shown me it at 12 yo I think I would have gagged

TooTicky · 01/03/2008 22:47

I'm thinking I should buy something in readiness. Probably a box of Natracare then.

is your dd aware of your choice of san pro? i am assuming she knows about periods?

expatinscotland · 01/03/2008 22:51

I could have used a mooncup from the getgo had they been around at the time.

But I used tampons from the first period. I was 11 and way into ballet and there was NO way I was using towels.

Eeewww.

KatyMac · 01/03/2008 22:51

Glucose - I keep trying to write something about your choice of word but every time I do it sounds rude rather than funny -

pamplemousse · 01/03/2008 22:52

Natracare to start with I reckon a mooncup would scare the hell out of her, mine amazed me when it arrived, its huge!

TooTicky · 01/03/2008 22:53

Oh yes, she knows. I want to make it easy for her at first though. Periods are daunting enough at the start.

OP posts:
TooTicky · 01/03/2008 22:54

I definitely don't want her to use tampons.

avenanap · 01/03/2008 22:58

I have just killed the scented sanitary protection thread by talking about the mooncup and periods. Can I ask a question without offending?

TooTicky · 01/03/2008 23:00

Of course

OP posts:
glucose · 01/03/2008 23:03

I think you are right periods are daunting, and they come at an age when I found I was under lots of pressure to conform. So I would try to be supportive to any choice dd makes.

avenanap · 01/03/2008 23:04

Thankyou. It tries to escape (mooncup), I've used it once and it was really uncomfortable and kept trying to run off. It's the right size so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

You can get unbleached cotton tampons and towels, I'd say towels are better for young ladies as first few years give unpredictable periods. Tampons take time to master.

TooTicky · 01/03/2008 23:04

Indeed. As long as it doesn't involve tampons [fanatical]

TooTicky · 01/03/2008 23:05

Mine sits quite snugly inside me. Did you have it in far enough? I'm wearing mine now and can't feel it at all.

OP posts:
avenanap · 01/03/2008 23:08

Hmm, I don't think I've cut the bobble off the end short enough either. I shall try it again and banish the nasty tampons from my house. Thankyou, I may be back in 2 weeks when the painters come back.

suzi2 · 01/03/2008 23:08

I'll have about 10 yrs to ponder that! I guess I'll go through all the options with her. I used towels when I started mine at 11 as my mum thought I was too young for tampons and worried about TSS. But I danced a lot and towels were fairly obvious and minging so I actually bought (and hid) tampax and used them! My mum found them and said "why didn't you just say and I'd have got you some?". Hmmm... shows how weird you are about periods when you're that age!

suzi2 · 01/03/2008 23:10

I've only used mine once so far but had to cut the stem right off really. I've also heard that you need it in far enough to let your pelvic floor muscles do the work and that might be a bit further in for those of us who have recently had children!

smartiejake · 01/03/2008 23:10

I also used tampons from the very first period and still think towels are EEwwww. Still not quite brave enough to try a moon cup. DOn't think it would stay in TBH

Think reusable towels are even more EEWWWWWWW!

TooTicky · 01/03/2008 23:11

Don't cut it too short avenanap!! Good luck

Now, dd1 is 11 and has been getting lots of discharge - interestingly, she tends to mention it when I am menstruating - so I am thinking it could be soon.

Boco · 01/03/2008 23:11

There was a bit on the website about 'new moons' and how you can use them from the start. I was thinking about it the other day though, and remembering the terror of tampons in the beginning, so don't know if i'd have managed mooncupping. I'd probably give her pads for first couple of months to make things a bit easier.

TooTicky · 01/03/2008 23:12

Mooncups are easy peasy smartiejake!

OP posts:
TooTicky · 01/03/2008 23:13

The whole insertion thing just doesn't seem right for young girls.

OP posts:
suzi2 · 01/03/2008 23:17

But then you're using your fingers which is probably easier than sticking an applicator tampon in? And they don't go in as far? Mind you, they're pretty wide.
