What will your daughter use when she starts her periods?

make sure you go in a loo with loo roll
pull it out with some loo roll on your hand
tip content down loo
wipe with loo roll
stick back in

if you have a bit of blood on your hand wait till loo has emptied and then leave for sinks. I try to head for a disabled loo where there is a sink inside.

suzi2 · 02/03/2008 09:45

Empty it down loo, a good wipe over with toilet roll then out to wash your hands. My hands rarely get that bloody that it would be noticed. And one hand is always clean for opening the door etc. They're honestly really straightforward.

Only indiscrete thing I've found is that the blood can 'pool' in the bottom of the loo even when flushed. So I throw down a couple of sheets of loo roll first before pouring it out.

It's worth noting that I have to change tampons every 1-2 hours for the first day or so of my period, but the mooncup only every 3-4 hours. After the first couple of days, I can easily go 6-8 hours before emptying it.

FrannyandZooey · 02/03/2008 09:50

no not impossible at all trolley
they do hold more blood than ordinary sanpro so you would not usually need to change as often anyway

TooT when I started my periods, tampons were the only things that made them bearable for me. They were discreet and kept everything contained inside. I would have been very unhappy if anyone had made me use pads (now of course, I would be very unhappy if anyone made me use tampons, but I needed to have that choice age 13)

I will talk to DD about the options and let her decide.

Yes, I realise that what other people use will probably be quite crucial

I think menarche is a BIG moment of insecurity for many girls TooT
it's natural she may not want to blaze her own trail at this point
but you just don't know how she will feel
I think talking and showing all the different options now rather than when absolutely necessary, can give her time to get used to them and give it some thought in advance?

FrannyandZooey · 02/03/2008 19:21

sorry I was being really pompous there

Habbibu · 02/03/2008 19:25

I must have been a very ungirly girl - did not discuss what I used at all. I think a mooncup would have been great when I was younger, in hindsight - nothing to fall out of your bag/try to hide up your sleeve in school...

Habbibu · 02/03/2008 19:27

Second the easiness of use of mooncups when out and about - I just wipe my hands with loo roll before leaving cubicle, and then wash hands. No worse than trying to get yucky tampon across cubicle to bin placed just that bit too far away.

PuppyMonkey · 02/03/2008 19:30

This is going to sound really awful, but I have no idea what a mooncup is ... can someone explain?

FrannyandZooey · 02/03/2008 19:32

Puppy it is a cup shaped squashy device which you use to catch your menstrual flow
very easy and clean to use - no more stinky bins full of tampons etc

PuppyMonkey · 02/03/2008 19:35

Thanks! How have I got to the age of 41 without ever having heard of this?

Anyone know a web link?

FrannyandZooey · 02/03/2008 19:36

here you go

bodykind usually have the best deals on selling them

PuppyMonkey · 02/03/2008 19:48

Most intriguing. You learn sommat new every day..

pinkspottywellies · 02/03/2008 21:56

Good tip about taking it out with loo roll over hand and putting a piece down first to stop it pooling in the loo. Thanks!

snorkle · 02/03/2008 22:26

Interestingly dd has asked me to buy her a mooncup, which I wouldn't have considered at all for a youngster. I haven't yet, but think I will. I have warned her she may not find it very easy to use initially and might prefer alternatives at least to start with.

TooTicky · 02/03/2008 22:27

How old is she Snorkle?

  1. Very, very thin though, so I doubt she'll start very soon.
TooTicky · 02/03/2008 22:45

It's odd wondering when they'll start, isn't it?
