Not Appendicitis so what else could it be?

Lathemistress · 19/08/2023 00:04

I have had pain in my lower right abdomen constantly for the last 48 hours. I was referred to emergency care by the GP and they ruled out appendicitis and referred back to GP.
It's a while before I can get another GP appointment so left in pain and worried about what else it could be. Has anyone experienced similar and had a definite diagnosis ?

Ovarian cyst?

cherryassam · 19/08/2023 00:21

I was going to also say Ovarian cyst.

What sort of pain is it?

Could you be pregnant?

Diverticulitis runs in my family and often results in one-sided intense abdomen pain

YukoandHiro · 19/08/2023 00:31

Gallbladder - usually upper right but can travel around a bit

MagratsDanglyCharms21 · 19/08/2023 04:02

Gallbladder? Panreatitis?

LBFseBrom · 19/08/2023 04:05

IBS causes that sort of pain.

GG1986 · 19/08/2023 04:45

I had what Dr.thoight was a grumbling appendix, but it was actually painful ovulation and endometriosis.

Autieangel · 19/08/2023 05:25

If it goes round to the back. Kidney infection?

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 19/08/2023 06:41

How did they rule out appendicitis OP?

GlamGiraffe · 19/08/2023 06:57

Ovarian cyst, ectopic pregnancy, enteritis ( from food), salpingitis ( blocked inflamed fallopian ttube). All of these can manifest in the same location as appendicitis with servere pain. Ultra sounds(assuming they didn't rule out appendicitis by ct which Is gold standard) stool samples will rule out the will rule out enteritis. Otherwise deep muscle strain possibly?
How you can sort it out, bad pain is miserable.

Thankyou all your replies. To the poster who asked how they ruled it out, they just had a prod around and did a blood test.
And to the poster having a private scan, hope you get to the bottom of it. Please let us know. I am going to go through all the comments and have a Google. The pain is awful. I was told A&E if it got worse but I don't think i could stand it being any worse 😕

Are you female? Did the GP do a pregnancy test or urine test for either a UTI or presence of blood for a potential kidney stone? Any chance of pregnancy? Any fever/diarrhoea/constipation/vomiting or other symptoms? Have you tried over the counter meds for the pain? Are they helping?

Lathemistress · 19/08/2023 23:00

I am female but 54 so a pregnancy test not necessary. No other tests though, literally a bit of a prod and a blood test.
I have had diarrhea but no vomiting just nausea but wasn't sure if that was just pain related. I am taking regular paracetamol and it takes the edge of it but wears off before the next dose is due and I was advised by a nurse at the hospital not to take ibuprofen.

I hate when people ask me, "Why are you so quiet?" Because I am. That's how I function. I don't ask you, "Why are you so noisy? Why do you talk so much?" It's rude.

I had this is 2018, never been the saame since! It was mesenteric adenitis, supposed to be a 'mild childhood condition '. Diagnosed with CT scan

Garman · 19/08/2023 23:08

I had that and it was a kidney infection.

cherryassam · 19/08/2023 23:14

The blood test was probably to see if there was any indication of infection. Did they give you any details / can you see the test on your health record on the NHS app?

Diverticulitis can cause severe constant pain and diarrhoea but would likely also cause raised infection / inflammation markers that would show up on a blood test. It is common to be told not to take ibuprofen with diverticulitis though.

Is the pain getting worse over time or is it stable?

Lathemistress · 19/08/2023 23:17

Thankyou for all your helpful replies.
So it's looking like there's a wide range of possibilities and I will probably just have to sit it out and wait for the GP appointment, unless it gets worse of course.

The level of pain you’re describing would warrant an emergency GP appointment IMO, might be worth trying on Monday?

SabrinaThwaite · 19/08/2023 23:21

DS had similar and gall bladder was flagged up as a possibility.

Switchingoff · 19/08/2023 23:21

Endometriosis?

Lathemistress · 19/08/2023 23:22

I will ring them on Monday morning and see if I have any luck. The receptionist was adamant on Friday that it wasn't urgent as I had been seen at the hospital and would have to wait for a routine appointment 🙁

Ovarian cyst
IBS
constipation/trapped wind.

olympicsrock · 19/08/2023 23:25

i’d go to A&E - if pain is awful , they should really do a urine dip , an ultrasound to image your ovaries and look for fluid in the pelvis ( sometimes there has been a ruptured ovarian cyst. Bloods would be normal.

ovaries can twist on their Pedicles causing pain again no much on examination and normal bloods… sometimes only found when you do a laparoscopy.

If the pain is no better get to A and E.

SunWorshipping · 19/08/2023 23:26

I once had this, it was an ovarian cyst, absolute agony too, I was convinced I was dying at one point it was that painful.

MintJulia · 19/08/2023 23:36

Mine was a twisted ovarian dermoid. V painful, I couldn't persuade my gp to do an ultrasound, he insisted it was IBS, until I collapsed in A&E at 3am.

The relief once it had been removed was indescribable. 🙂
