ok, I have been in pain since monday. started in upper tummy and back (about kidney area, but only on my left side) feeling as tho I was being stabbed, and coming a waves like contractions!

has been getting worse since, and then yesterday I also got shoulder pain and the pain started to move down.......it is now in lower tummy, still on the left, feel's like bad period pains

went to docs this morning as was knackered.......I also have been going to bed really early too for me, and have felt that bad I didn;t even want to watch CSI or Torchwood (which to me is clearly meaning I am ill!), but still not sleeping great and waking as tired as I went to bed on. I am not even bothered to put make-up on either, and even did the school run in my 'relaxy slobby' clothes.

anyhoo........doc reckons from the description maybe kidney stones, I did a wee sample and it was positive for blood and protien so she is sending that off, and also sent me for tummy xrays which have now been done.

BUT

She has goven no other advice. I am to ring for wee results tomorrow afternoon, altho they may not be back till monday.....xrays are 10-14days before they will be back, and in the meantime rest, fluids, painkillers.....if pain gets worse then go to A&E, and hopefully it will either pass on its own or may have already done.

she gave no anti-b's even tho I do clearly have something wrong with my wee, no painkiller advice (altho I do have plenty codiene still from my car accident so to be fair, that will probably suffice!), no advice over how it may/would feel if I DID happen to pass the 'possible' stone, what they may do if there is one, and what they would do if they pain does get worse, which right now it is altho I have been poked and prodded so am ignoring for now....

oooh....and the xray lady took the pic and then sent me away....no chatting, no telling me if they did see anything (altho I realise that it isn't their job to diagnose me), and I am now feeling like I have been left hanging!

I thought about googling, but then that can scare you, I don;t know for certain anyway that it is a kidney stone/stones, so am here hoping for someone to have been thro it and can so tell me what I could maybe expect.

please

i had this, it was a stone. drink loads and have codeine to hand.

chibi · 28/02/2008 14:06

the pain was as bad/intense as labour! i sympathise

missorinoco · 28/02/2008 14:12

poor you! kidney stones v painful. meant to be the nearest men will get to experiencing the pain of labour.

if it is a kidney stone, that will be why you have blood in your urine. (the lining of the tubes will be irritated.)

best pain killer, if you can have it, is an anti-inflammatory. i.e. ibuprofen, or voltarol, latter is more powerful. (shouldn't have if asthmatic, not advised if have a tummy ulcer). voltarol is on prescription though. gp might prescibe it if you rang and asked for it.

the majority do pass by themselves. some don't which is why you should go to a&e if it gets worse.

x-ray lady may not have been able to see it, not always immediately obvious, and i think they may not be allowed to say anyway.

hth.

missorinoco · 28/02/2008 14:13

also shouldn't have voltarol if you are known to have underlying kidney disease (stones don't "count" as this, for want of a better word cos the kidneys themselves are usually normal)

Psychomum5 · 28/02/2008 14:14

yup....tis like labour, altho not the hidious pain of late labour as yet, more like early to middle stage of pain.

does that mean it will get worse????

[eek]

and will it pass by itself if indeed it is a stone??
plus....if it does, will I know/how will I know? does it hurt bad???(am being a wimp now)

and what if it is a stone, and yet it doesn;t pass??? will they need to cut it out of me.....

OP posts:
Psychomum5 · 28/02/2008 14:18

oooh.....I have volterol too cos of car accident.....oh no, got Naproxen instead. my mistake.......I was on volterol but they change me to add variety to my life(docs words too!). still an NSAID tho, so am assuming it will do the same job!

still quaking in fear of possible more [ain tho

OP posts:
missorinoco · 28/02/2008 14:20

may not get worse. don't think it crescendos to a peak like labour. pain is as the stone moves down your tubes.

they are often really small. sometimes you see "grit" in your wee, but not often, so it's an unreliable sign. if the pain goes, it's robably gone.

if it doesn't they can get it out for you, but they don't cut it out. can tell you if you want, but they do usually pass, and the idea of it will probably be 100x worse than the experience.

not sure someone with a kidney stone gets called a wimp, even by themselves!

futurity · 28/02/2008 14:20

i had kidney stones last summer so know what you are going through. No really advice but can only just tell you what I went through. Pain came on in the morning and then got very bad quite quickly. THought it was appendicitis so off to out of hours doctors (it was a weekend). After rolling around in pain for an hour (had taken paracetomal and ibropfren at home but didn't do anything) I saw someone and he poked and prodded and diagnosed kidney stones. Was given antibiotics in case it was urine infection and pain killers and also told if it got too bad to go to A&E. Went home and suffered for that day.

Next day the pain had gone and i was left feeling like i had been punched in the kidney. Went to the doctor who refered me for x-rays and told me to drink at least 2 litres of water a day.

Had Xrays a few weeks later. However, about a week before the x-rays a stone came out! Basically I was doing a wee and felt a sharp pain so immediately put my hand down there with a bit of toilet paper and there on it was the stone! It looked like a bit of crystal stone about the size of a pea. I kept it and took it to the hospital when I saw the consultant. Whilst there I had blood test and urine test (I had been collecting urine for 24 hours..joy!) and the stone was sent of for tests. The consultant told me results of the scan which said i had 4 stones left in me...two in each kidney but as they were very small nothing would be done about them (if they are larger they blast them with rays or something!) He gave me a leaflet with dietary advice but again the main advice was to drink lots of water...that is the most important thing for a "stone sufferer" as he called me!

And that was it really...got a letter a few weeks later saying nothing weird had come back from the tests, just that i didn't produce enough urine so that proves I don't drink enough water!! No more pain since then but expect the stones are still hanging around in me!! Hope this has helped a bit. x

Mine was late labour, intense type thing very quickly - it could be that things pass through my system faster than yours though, hence the difference. I started about 3am, by 6am was only able to crawl sobbing to Boy to call emergency doc, by 7am my mum was driving me there. 7.10am I didn't care that DS would have to be fed formula, I was having an injection!

Then I felt goooooooooooooooooooooood.

They gave me strong pills of some sort (I have no idea what, possibly codeine, I know b/f was very much out), and I floated in and out of consciousness all day due to the pills knocking me out.

By about 8.30pm the pain had shifted from my kidneys and felt more like cystitis, I spent the next hour desperately trying to wee as much as possible because I could feel it shifting as I did. Then it was suddenly not hurting anymore.

Then I sobbed about not being strong enough to keep off meds and DS having formula Gotta love the very rational mind of mother with newborn

missorinoco · 28/02/2008 14:24

naproxen would also work. descriptions of pain are making me wince for you. quick, take it!

Psychomum5 · 28/02/2008 15:37

sorry....been and gone on school run, and worried the girls with the wincing while driving and the white face!

am thinking that I need to drink lotts more than I do normally, as most days I drink lots of coffee and about 2 glasses, maybe 3, of squash/water.

pain is back at kidney height again now too, as well as low, so either I have 2 stones? or something different is occuring, either way, pain is NOT nice (bloody crap is the word of choice!) and still got dancing runs to do so still no pain releif

grrrrrrr.

OP posts:
chibi · 28/02/2008 15:45

can you get someone else to do th driving for you?
you must be a tough old bird to still be mobile without drugs. i was nearly puking with pain till i took something.

i remember pain on both sides too though more intense on th left - was only 1 stone though

Psychomum5 · 28/02/2008 15:48

am mobile cos of no choice tight now, and the thought of the drugs are keeping me going......plus after 5 babies and the birthing of them on 'just' gas and air, breathing thro the pain is getting quite easy.

mind you, am beginning to wonder whether I CAN cope with the dancing runs.....am thinking maybe drop and crawl into bed and ring DH to do the rest.

oh, and helpfully, my car as seat heaters, so tis like driving with a hot water bottle on your back........major relief on that score!

OP posts:
chibi · 28/02/2008 15:54

don't be a hero psycho make dh do runs get thee to bed/bath + drugs posthaste

Psychomum5 · 28/02/2008 17:37

stopped being a hero....took girls to dancing, bent double in pain at dancing, went white, and got told to go home!!!

am in bed now, DH is home, I am dosed to the nines on codien and naproxen and feeling all happy and floaty and able to be back here for a while.

only thing now is that we were s'posed to be out tomorrow with friends for dinner......how likely is it that I will be ok for that?????

am I likely to pass stone and bounce back????

OP posts:
NicMac · 28/02/2008 17:53

I so sympathise, I had kidney stones when I was 13 ans I still remember the agony. For six motnhs they diagnosed me with a 'grumbling appendicitus'. Anyway, it might not be that, drink lots of water in an attempt to flush it through your system.

chibi · 28/02/2008 17:57

i was fine the next day, felt twinge-y a few days later + then the stone passed. who knows though. i refused to leave the house without pain meds to hand until i got the all clear from the xrays. i'm not a driver though.

Psychomum5 · 28/02/2008 18:05

thanks for the replies, but DH has cancelled it anyway.

he decided (probebly rightly), that it wasn;t going to be fair if I wasn't feeling ok, and it is at a place that you have to give 24hrs notice or they charge (we had to pay deposit already!)so he didn;t think the 'wait and see' approach was fair.

also, my friend who we are going with has said the same, so all off till next time......

not to worry......can curl up in peace now and r-e-l-a-x........as much as humanly possible given that the pain is horridand

OP posts:
missorinoco · 28/02/2008 19:00

sorry, bathing ds. pilots are grounded with kidney stones until they have the all clear that they have gone. suspect dh was right.

hope it gets better soon.

Psychomum5 · 28/02/2008 19:05

ooh really??? (re the pilots that is)

never would have thought that, altho tis rather obvious given the amount of pain they cause!!

I know I shouldn;t have driven earlier, but for school there was no-one else to help as I was the one doing the helping as one mum is full-time at work this week and tother mum is in hospital with collasped disc (spine) and I was helping her DH as he is disabled. so on that score, I was the least scary option.

dancing I should'nt have done I admit, but I was certain that I could be brave.......and found that I was so not

OP posts:
scanner · 28/02/2008 19:17

I've had kidney stones on and off for years, as has been said already the best and only thing that gets rid of the pain is Voltarol. I've been in so much pain with them in hospital that they put me on mophine!

Other things that helps are lying on your side with the kidney pain side against the bed/sofa, hotwater bottle on the side. Drinking loads of water.

If I were you, I'd ring the GP and tell them whats happening.

Good luck

Psychomum5 · 28/02/2008 19:22

ah, hot water bottle....forgot that as a pain-relief option....thankyou

I may well go back to docs in morning, unless it gets so bad the codein and naproxen stop working, and then I have been advised to go to A&E.

am out of volterol me thinks.....unless they are in the medicine cupboard downstairs?

am ok for now tho...pain still there, but I am not curled up in a ball anymore
