Does anyone know what this rash is?

I washed my hair this morning and I found this rash on the base of my neck. It looks like the rash goes up into my scalp too but I don't have it on the top of my head.

Psorsis runs in the family and I did have that before as a teenager and I had patches of it before so I am wondering if this is psorsis. Or if it's something else like a fungal infection.

I have ringworm on the inside of my leg but I was very careful with it. I don't know if it's ringworm that spread.

I have a hairdressers appointment next week and I do t know of I should cancel. It's not for dye or colour but for wash and cut.
If it is ringworm I will be so embarrassed during a hairdressers appointment.

This is one of my knees.

I can't believe I forgot I had psiorasis. I am I to my 40s now and last time I had issues with this, I was about 12 or 13.

Does anyone know what this rash is?

Absolutely psoriasis.

Funco · 10/08/2023 17:44

Thank you all so much for your replies. I'm glad the over whelming replies suggests psorsiasis. I was so embarrassed with the possibility of ringworm and an upcoming hairdressers appointment which is badly needed. I didn't feel like cancelling either because it's been 6 months since my last trim and it's so hard to get my time to align with my hairdressers and that he is so good and cute and I'm looking forward to seeing him and I'm looking forward to him minding me in his chair for 50 minutes.

@SmileyClare sorry, was being pedantic! Years of 'defending' why I 'don't do something about it' 🙄

I can imagine. It must be frustrating.

I’ve just got over a horrible skin rash in reaction to some medication I was taking ..“Have you tried sudocrem?” seems to some peoples answer to anything skin related!

SmileyClare · 10/08/2023 21:36

Sorry you’re so stressed op.
I’d advise hitting the ringworm (on your leg) hard (max dose regular intervals) with the anti fungal cream you’ve been given and it should shift.
Easier said than done when life’s busy I realise.

Im sure your hairdresser has seen psoriasis, eczema or similar before and won’t be phased.
Perhaps you could explain beforehand to avoid embarrassment and ask them to use gentle products?

Hope things get easier for you

I have a doctor's appointment made but it's not for another two weeks.

Today was wash day for me. I took some more pictures. I know it's impossible for anyone to say what this is. But I am looking at the picture from today and now I can trace a red circle around the back of my neck into my scalp with the inside of the circle being somewhat clear. See if you can see it from these pictures.

I am anxious now that maybe it's ringworm. I am so embarrassed of a ringworm especially considering I have a hairdressers appointment coming up.

OP posts:
Funco · 13/08/2023 19:29

Do you see the circle shape?

Unless if psiorasis can look like this too

It's not itchy

It's exactly what my scalp/back of my neck looks like when I have a flare of Psoriasis. For me, the burning starts a few weeks later.

Have you gone back to using T-Gel yet?

Ok, thank you for your reply. I feel more at ease now.

I have 2 bottles of tgel ordered now and it will be with me by Wednesday I reckon in time for my next wash day.

Should I wash my hair every day or every second day now that I need to treat my scalp.

I usually wash every 3 days.

My ponytail is sore I must admit. It's not even very tight. It's very loose.

I have small red patches on my elbows and so on my knees with scales over them.

Ringworm rash is typically very itchy and forms quite crusty areas. On the scalp it usually causes small areas of hair loss.

I agree, it’s likely psoriasis but I think if you suspect ringworm, then you can’t realistically attend your hair appointment. 😩
Ringworm is nothing to be embarrassed about- it’s a fungal infection, not actually a worm. However, it’s highly contagious.

Do you work with or own animals?

It’s frustrating that you can’t see a gp for 2 weeks. It might be worth asking a pharmacist to look at it and advise?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 13/08/2023 20:36

I'd wash it more frequently, giving the shampoo five minutes to sit on my scalp before rinsing and conditioning.

If it's the weight of your ponytail, if you do two ponies, one for the top of your head, flip/twist it inside itself the band and then join it with the one from the back of your head to it (I can't explain it better, it's the way you see on TikTok), that takes a lot of the weight off one part of your scalp.

Abfab63 · 13/08/2023 20:53

99.9% sure that's psoriasis like the others have said. My mum and sister have it on knees and hairline. Looks exactly the same.

Docs will give you a cream for it.

Yes, I have a cat.

Still 99.999999% sure that it's psoriasis. Everything you have posted indicates it, including the pictures and the locations. I've added a comparison list for you to look at.

SmileyClare · 13/08/2023 22:44

As an aside, if you have ringworm on your leg, it’s worth treating your cat. You don’t want to be in a cycle of reinfecting each other and cats can be asymptomatic carriers!

I think once you have treated and irradiated the ringworm infection, you can avoid any future confusion should you develop patches of psoriasis.
Ring worm should clear within 10-14 days with treatment.

If you can get to a pharmacy, steroid cream can be bought OTC. That will help the psoriasis and they can offer advice.

Two weeks is a long wait to get something prescribed! Alternatively, your doctor’s surgery may offer a remote appointment and you send photos digitally to your gp (?)

Its worth asking your gp for a referral as suggested by a pp.

Funco · 13/08/2023 23:28

Thank you for the replies, I'm keeping on top of the ringworm and it's fading. Still not gone but easing.

I don't think my cat gave the ring worm to me because of the location. It's on my inside thigh. I don't know how I got it to be honest. I think it came about back in May. The trousers I was wearing, on the inside leg, near the crotch, a hole developed in the seam and that's where the ringworm came on my leg from rubbing on that hole.

OP posts:
Oldermum84 · 14/08/2023 10:09

IMO that patch on your leg is not ringworm. I think all of it is eczema/psoriasis.

ManchesterLu · 14/08/2023 10:20

I get a very similar rash under my apple watch strap. Have you been wearing anything with a collar/that kind of neckline when you've been sweating?

Now that I think about it, I get the same rash under my watch too but I am not wearing it lately.

I wore a wool Cardigan during the summer when it was cold. I was out and about and exploring and hiking and then the sun came out but I had no sun cream so I continued to wear the wool cardigan. I was sweaty.

Would it be from that?

But that was about 5 weeks ago.

I have new pictures from today and there's white flakes appearing over some of the red now on the neck.

Funco · 14/08/2023 15:12

My neck today. White flakes appearing over the red. I was extra gentle with my scalp and hair yesterday and applied an emoliient after washing my hair followed by an oil on top of the emollient. Using what I have til I get coal tar.

Ah you poor thing- that looks sore.

Sun in small doses can help psoriasis but sunburn can aggravate it.

You may be generally rundown and stressed which will make you more susceptible to a flare up- ditto your resistance to any infection eg ringworm.

Sometimes easier said than done- but look after yourself- eat well-rest - get enough sleep- and try a multi vitamin supplement too. A bit of self care goes a long way!
