Does anyone know what this rash is?

I washed my hair this morning and I found this rash on the base of my neck. It looks like the rash goes up into my scalp too but I don't have it on the top of my head.

Psorsis runs in the family and I did have that before as a teenager and I had patches of it before so I am wondering if this is psorsis. Or if it's something else like a fungal infection.

I have ringworm on the inside of my leg but I was very careful with it. I don't know if it's ringworm that spread.

I have a hairdressers appointment next week and I do t know of I should cancel. It's not for dye or colour but for wash and cut.
If it is ringworm I will be so embarrassed during a hairdressers appointment.

It's psoriasis "almost certainly". I've had psoriasis for 62yrs and it's exactly the same, even down to the 'pattern' of where it is and how it's up in your hairline. I'd make an appointment to see the Dr or see the chemist in the meantime.

I had it when I was a teenager and it did clear up through my teens, 20s and 30s.

I think maybe it might be happening again. It doesn't bother me at all only I found it in the mirror and it looks unsightly.

I will go to the doctor anyway and see what it is for sure.

My neck is just like this and has been for years. Most of the time no issues, but occasionally itchy especially when I'm hot. Like previous poster I think it's psoriasis.

Iamgoingtohell · 09/08/2023 12:55

It looks like psoriasis to me. My daughter and sister both suffer with it and it definitely has the same characteristics

Funco · 09/08/2023 13:40

I used to use neutrogena tgel shampoo but I stopped using it in an effort to look after my hair better. My goal for my hair is to achieve long and healthy hair so I stopped using tgel because it was too harsh. I think I may need to go back to it.

I was very stressed over the past number of weeks and I suspect maybe stress might play a part.

I wouldn't hesitate to go to the docs with that, OP.

Just to note too that just because it's not over your whole head doesn't necessarily mean it's not a reaction to shampoo/hair products.

Do you dye your hair?

Jazzybean · 09/08/2023 13:45

Looks like it could be the start of psoriasis to me.

My mum has it quite badly on her neck/scalp.

I’d see if emollient improves it before worrying about a doctors appointment.

Psoriasis is a lifelong condition that goes through periods of remission/minimal disease activity. You're experiencing a flare.

GP appointment - some scalp lotion will calm it down whilst the T-Gel takes effect again; you'll need to add in something to condition your hair after letting the T-Gel sit and take effect.

I use L'Oreal Dream Lengths Wonder Water before using conditioner, which works well for me - very little breakage - and I use a scalp scrubber (the ones with little rubber fingers) so I'm not pulling the hair around or scratching my scalp. Once it's dry (will sometimes use Dream Lengths Serum whilst drying it), I use Eucerin Scalp Balm, which keeps the skin in better condition outside the times I have to use the steroid lotion.

No, I don't dye my hair.

I did start using a new hair tonic for the scalp. It's a rosemary hair tonic. In the hope of achieving long and faster hair growth and to create body and volume in my hair too.

Maybe it's that.

This is what I am using on my scalp after shampoo and conditioner. I don't go too down low onto the neck though.

I thought this too. My sister is covered in it and it looks just the same

This was my uneducated thought too

I have similar and it’s a form of excema - I use Nizarol shampoo

Funco · 10/08/2023 09:57

This is some close up pictures I was able to grab.

Glad to read it could likely be psoriasis.

Looks like patches of psoriasis.

You say you’ve had ringworm on your leg all summer?
How was that diagnosed? Do you think the rash on your legs could also be psoriasis and not in fact ringworm?

I wasn't at the doctor with the leg rash. I presume it is the ringworm because it's the classic sign and symptom, it's a red circular rash. I had it before in the groin so I presume it's the same.

Ah ok. I just wondered because you’ve had it for so long. Ringworm usually clears up after treatment (within 4 weeks ).

Sunlight can help to clear psoriasis. You could try exposing your neck to the sun? (carefully!)

SmileyClare · 10/08/2023 10:35

I think it’s worth having your leg and neck rash looked at by a gp. Steroid cream will help in the meantime- I’d ask at a pharmacy for that. Although psoriasis is difficult to “cure”, If it doesn’t clear with topical cream, your doctor can prescribe tablets, injections or photosynthetic treatments.

nokidshere · 10/08/2023 11:04

There is no cure for psoriasis and it's unlikely that a Dr would prescribe anything other than topical creams. For anything else you need to see a dermatologist.

SmileyClare · 10/08/2023 14:08

Fair point although I did write “cure” in inverted commas. For some people like the op psoriasis can clear up completely for decades although it may flare again.

But yes you’re right about seeing a dermatologist (or asking a gp for a referral on NHS)
Sorry if that was misleading.

Dd had similar with headlice.

Unfortunately I was never consistent with my over the counter fungal cream - dakerin(spelling). I would apply it once or twice a week or a fortnight instead of following the recommended instructions. I am trying to be more consistent now but it's impossible when I'm holding down a full time job and often long and demanding. I applied it twice a day over the past two days on my leg.

I am being paranoid about cross contamination. I use gloves when applying it and I wash my hands. I am washing pants on a high temperature and I am not sharing towels and I have different towels for my hair.

I doubt it's headline. Surely I would know if it was headlice. I am not itchy.

I think I had this rash on my neck for some time but I never took notice of it but it's more pronounced now. It's either a reaction to the new stuff that I am using or stress related, likely.

I forgot to mention that I may have something on my knees but it's undiagnosed. I have two sore knees and they can be red and scaly and I think maybe psiorasis there too.
