Is your blood pressure low?

PupInAPram · 08/08/2023 16:45

My blood pressure is always low. I just looked online and it's what would be expected of a younger teen or athlete. I'm a fat woman in my 60s and I've had a fair amount of stress in my life. The nurse always looks astonished when I have my blood pressure taken. I can only imagine it's hereditary and I'm just lucky, but I'm curious if it's a common thing. There's tons of information online about high blood pressure, but nothing about low.

Yes I have it.
Tons of info online.
Example:

Tl:dr most people can manage it by eating more salt and drinking more water. If dangerously low, they can put you on medication. Mostly harmless.

Yes. Mine is usually 90/60 and the nurses always double check that the machines are working properly.

I try to keep hydrated and add salt to food, otherwise I can get very shaky and dizzy.

PupInAPram · 08/08/2023 16:49

@BiscuitsandPuffin thanks for that but it's not bad low (below 90/60) it's good low (106/66 or similar).

My BP has always been on the low side.Last time I checked ,it was 98/60.I'm in my 60s,fairly active and a healthy weight for my height.

PupInAPram · 08/08/2023 16:53

I just assumed as I aged and gained weight it would go up. Not complaining, just curious.

Highlighta · 08/08/2023 16:56

Yes , all my life and I'm in my 50s now. I keep some salted crisps or nuts handy as they are always good to nibble on if you feel it dropping.

Unfortunately I wasn't allowed the water birth I was hoping for, as it dropped to 80/40 during labour. So I always think it drops when the body is under pressure.

My dd has the same, so it could be hereditary.

The drs always say rather low than high, so I just go with that mantra too 😃

PupInAPram · 08/08/2023 17:05

Funny you should mention salt @Highlighta I've always put far too much on my food; another reason my blood pressure should be high!

Mine’s generally on the lower end and I’m middle aged and fat. It’s only ever a problem if I injure myself. Something to do with the Adrenalin spike makes me feint.

Lionoso · 08/08/2023 17:12

Yes always. I tend to forget about it and it's habit to eat salty foods and drink lots of water.

I had surgery recently and apparently I gave the nurses some concerns as it stayed consistently low even after IV fluids. I was fine though.

wormshuffled · 08/08/2023 17:17

Yes, me too. Also with the fainting with pain.
When I had my epidural it went to 70/30 and I was really sick for hours after a c section. (Not fun) didn't know drinking water helps! I will try this.

My heart rate is generally low, sometimes drops as low as 39 while I sleep. I recently queried it with the dr and was given a 24 hour heart rate monitor. They said no issue.

kezziegrey · 08/08/2023 17:22

Yes mine was always very low when it was checked during my pregnancies. And I get shaky and dizzy. I hadn't thought about eating salty foods so thanks!

iwantawisteriathisyear · 08/08/2023 17:23

I've got low blood pressure. Inherited it from my mum.
I frequently get the shakes. If I don't have something to eat or drink I throw up and pass out.
I had an epidural when giving birth to second child. BP dropped through the floor and caused a major panic.

RandomMess · 08/08/2023 17:25

Mine is naturally low as is MIL so unsurprisingly the DC have low blood pressure too one of them has always been prone to being hangry and since being a teen feinting.

PupInAPram · 08/08/2023 17:26

I guess it's a lot more common than I realised. Happy I'll never have to have statins.

Yes and so is my mum's.

When I saw a cardiologist he asked 'do you think salt is bad for you?'

His advice was 2 teaspoons of salt in the morning plus 3 litres of water, most of that in the beginning of the day.

Mostly I am OK but tend to keel over on hot days or if I stand for too long.

KittensAllOverTheCarpetAndSofa · 08/08/2023 17:28

Mine was 98/58 yesterday. I have to wear compression stockings or I feel like I’m going to keel over when I’m walking around.
My BP drops when I stand, although typically (due to severe anxiety) it didn’t when the did the tilt table test last week at cardiology.

Nevermay · 08/08/2023 17:33

My daughter's has been low all her life - so low that she had to be exempt from standing still in lines at school. That was an interesting situation with supply teachers ....... " stand still Miss Nevermay" " I can't stand still sir, for medical reasons... yes, REALLY!!!" So low that a TA once called an ambulance after a GCSE biology lesson when children measured each others blood pressure.....

AnnaMagnani · 08/08/2023 18:14

@Nevermay I have regularly had to deter people from calling an ambulance for me.

I'll be lying on the floor, apparently looking a dramatic green colour, and just saying 'no it's normal for me' and 'please stop trying to sit me up'

PupInAPram · 08/08/2023 18:34

Oooh. Mine's never been low enough to cause any problems. But maybe it's because I self-medicate with a million cups of tea and vastly over-salted food 🤣

InvincibleInvisibility · 08/08/2023 18:39

Mine is always low. My mum and GM both have/had very high blood pressure so my mum is relieved.

Drs have always just asked me if I'm tired (yup) and that's it. (Although one did seem concerned about how Id actually managed to walk into the surgery!) I drink a lot but hardly have any salty food so this thread has been interesting.

Aozora13 · 08/08/2023 18:43

Yeah I’m the same, get it from my dad. Always mistaken for a fit person at the doctors. The only time it was an issue for me was in pregnancy when it was really low at times and I couldn’t stand for long or get up from seated without high risk of keeling over again. I have to drink a lot or I get wobbly, and I don’t skimp on salt.

CoffeandTiaMaria · 08/08/2023 18:43

Mine’s very low, 90/60 is the highest it gets.
It’s interesting that when it’s very low I crave salt, if I feel lightheaded then I automatically drink a pint of water and it goes. It’s a balancing act for me because I also have severe heart failure and it worsens of I drink more than 2 litres a day 😊

Squirrelsnut · 08/08/2023 18:45

I was just pondering this very matter as I had an HRT review today and they checked BP. I'm not very fit and somewhat overweight but I have consistently low readings.
I also tire very easily. Interesting about the salt; I almost never add it to food!

PupInAPram · 08/08/2023 18:49

I'm pretty low energy to be fair. I never thought about it being related to my blood pressure 🤔
