Is your blood pressure low?

My blood pressure is always low. I just looked online and it's what would be expected of a younger teen or athlete. I'm a fat woman in my 60s and I've had a fair amount of stress in my life. The nurse always looks astonished when I have my blood pressure taken. I can only imagine it's hereditary and I'm just lucky, but I'm curious if it's a common thing. There's tons of information online about high blood pressure, but nothing about low.

I was fat and inactive. Have got a lot less fat and much more active - and the BP is the same.

I can manage to stand for longer though - the key is squeezing your bum as it's the biggest muscle not moving your legs. Now I actually have some glutes it's a lot more effective.

That is interesting about drinking water, does this raise blood pressure then?

Ive spent many a year trying to increase my hydration but Ive previously had high blood pressure (now nice and low), I wonder if drinking a lot of water perhaps gave some falsely high readings or would it not really make that much of a difference?

I guess it's a lot more common than I realised. Happy I'll never have to have statins.

Statins are for cholesterol and when your risk of cardiovascular disease becomes greater than 10% over ten years. Which it does for everyone really as they age, some sooner than others.
DH had good BP but high cholesterol and is on statins.

Yes, usually around 105//60.

Hereditary.

I try to eat lots of salty foods.

Mine is on the low side but not dangerously low. I always assumed it would go up as i got older but now mid 50's and still the same. My dad was the same but i've never known if that's hereditary or just coincidence.

Mines always been low. I used to faint a fair bit but that stopped in middle age. I am on statins though as my qrisk is high even with low BP.
It's only a problem if I'm really ill. I was in hospital with covid and it was a real pain, the nurses were convinced I wasn't drinking enough quite accusatory about it. They made me drink so much water I was constantly at the loo. My BP remfirmly low.

My dad ( aged 80) is overweight but has low blood pressure , has had it all his life. Mine is low too. It got lower with pregnancy, worryingly so at one point but never been an issue otherwise ( I'm 48)

StoneWallandRoses · 19/08/2023 15:35

I just took my BP with my home machine. Its reading 106 over 52.
86 beats per minute

I'm 38. 5ft 5 and 10 st 8.
Would anyone know if this is within normal range, please?
I've started having issues with my kidneys with prompted the check.

PupInAPram · 19/08/2023 16:56

52 is very low I think? Ideal is 120/80 down to 90/60. Below that is considered concerning. 86 bpm sounds quite rapid. Mine is usually just below 70bpm which I think is pretty average.

I should add I have zero medical training.

Mine’s low, I always get the surprised comments from health professionals because I don’t look particularly healthy. I try not to stand up too quickly, during pregnancy it went even lower.

Mummy08m · 19/08/2023 17:30

I've always been low, now I'm pg it's about 95/50. Light headed all the time.

In answer to a pp, drinking water is good for regulating blood pressure in either direction, ie good to drink more if you're either high or low

Friggingfrog · 19/08/2023 17:36

Mines usually 90/60 and hereditary. No issues from it apart from with both my c sections- it dropped so much during the operation and I felt so sick and like I couldn’t breathe. I was fine after though. They wouldn’t let me back on the ward for ages because it was still really low until I managed to convince them I was fine and it’s just always low! I have almost fainted due to sudden pain a few times- didn’t know there was a link to this and low blood pressure. I love salt so always have a good amount but probably don’t drink enough water.

beachbitch · 19/08/2023 17:36

I’m overweight in my 40s and have low blood pressure. Definitely just good genes in my case.

CommonVetch · 19/08/2023 17:37

I've always been on the low side, even when pregnant, get dizzy standing too fast, etc. Nothing serious. I've always been heavy-handed with the salt on my food, I think I've been self medicating without realising!

I'm on medication that lowers blood pressure as a side effect so am currently struggling with fatigue and dizzy spells. It's not all roses, but it's probably better than high BP.
