Sudden, severe UTI- can't sleep

EnglishRose1320 · 13/07/2023 03:15

Any tips for a really painful UTI which means I can't sleep at all. Will obviously try and pick up antibiotics tomorrow. It's come on very quickly and unless I'm sat on the loo, I'm in agony- being on the loo isn't much better but the painful need to urinate lessens a little.

I've taken pain killers, tried a hot water bottle and taken melatonin in the hope I'd just sleep through it.

Drink plenty of water, cranberry juice is meant to help. painkillers but you’ve already done so.
if things get really bad, I would call 111

EnglishRose1320 · 13/07/2023 03:31

Thanks for replying, yes trying to keep my fluids up. I get UTIs semi regularly, 1 or 2 a year. But I've never had such a quick one before and never to the point, that I literally can't lie down at all.

I feel shockingly unwell and so so tired

Janefx40 · 13/07/2023 03:35

Ouch I'm sorry. I do the hot water bottle between my legs to distract me plus wear a sanitary towel to stop me panicking about leakage. I never do leak! But I worry about it. But if that doesn't work then make your peace with sitting on the loo and drink A LOT. Once it starts coming through I find it feels less painful to be actually peeing rather than feeling you need to but not managing it.

Get Netflix up on your phone and sit there watching tV to pass the time.

Other than that there isn't much to do but rude it out, best of luck x

Janefx40 · 13/07/2023 03:36

And remember it is awful but this really bad bit won't last forever. A few horrid hours and it'll ease off a little xxx

lemmein · 13/07/2023 03:39

You have my sympathies, I honestly think UTIs are one of the worst pains to have Sad

Not particularly helpful for you tonight but if you get them regularly I can highly recommend high dose cranberry tablets. A few years ago I had a UTI for weeks, nothing would shift it - out of desperation I ordered the tablets off Amazon and it cleared up almost immediately!

You can get antibiotics from chemists now without a script so at least you'll be able to take a dose as soon as they open.

EnglishRose1320 · 13/07/2023 03:41

Thank you for the replies. Can I just rock up to any pharmacy and ask for antibiotics? I've done an online consult before, but had to wait a day before they replied.

Get in the bath. Drink a lot of water. After years of having no UTIs I got one on a work transatlantic flight. It was awful. I landed and ran for boots to get the crystals that make it not painful to pee. I had such a hard time getting to a doctor I just used the super drug service and I had a script immediately.

If I were you pay the healthcare tax and get the appointment for first thing. I booked my appointment at 2am while up because I was peeing.

DreamTheMoors · 13/07/2023 03:49

Ooh I hate it when that happens. I’m so sorry!
I’ve nothing to add, but go to the drug or buy some AZO and always keep them on hand.
They’re little miracles when you have bladder pain. They turn your urine orange but that’s all. You can safely use them for 2 or 3 days until you can start your antibiotics.

Sorry - meant buy them on Amazon.

Feel better, @EnglishRose1320!!

EnglishRose1320 · 13/07/2023 03:51

Unfortunately we have an issue with our pipes vibrating and humming atm, so I'd wake up the whole house if I had a bath.

I'm going to see if I can book online now, thanks

You need to be seen by A&E ASAP! It sounds like you could be going into septic shock. My father died from sepsis from a UTI. The feeling so so tired and very unwell were signs we missed. It was too late by the time we eventually called an ambulance.

EnglishRose1320 · 13/07/2023 04:32

I don't have a temp, raised pulse, low blood pressure or any of the signs of sepsis. I feel really tired because I haven't slept, and I was already tired from a few late nights in a row.

I do feel quite unwell, but without any of the other symptoms, I don't think it's sepsis. Will definitely keep an eye though, thanks

How are you feeling now?
I suffered regularly from uti’s occasionally severe, would sit in a tepid bath, knees up, drink water, coffee, then
bought Cystemme sachets which I’m now never without.
Commercial cranberry juice seldom works now as it is so diluted but naturesplus cranberry tablets help if your healthfood shop stocks them.
Do you have any whisky in the house? This works! a stiff inch, neat, burns off any naughty
germ lurking, best if you can lie down and not about to drive.
This was recommended to me by my reflexologist, not a doctor or pharmacist.
I hope you are feeling better soon and have
achieved some sleep.
Those of is who have suffered with this pain and discomfort sympathise

countrygirl99 · 13/07/2023 05:52

Don't under any circumstances drink coke. Lesson learned the hard way. Was 35 years ago and I still wince at the thought.

allthebeautifulflowers · 13/07/2023 05:55

I hope you have some relief soon.

On a longer term basis, d-mannose tablets can help prevent UTIs.

Or if you're late 30s or older, regular UTIs could be a perimenopause thing. I've not had a UTI since starting to use topical oestrogen.

BirdWatch · 13/07/2023 06:06

I have no experience personally but I have heard that drinking a glass of water with baking soda mixed in, helps relieve the pain of cyst or UTI .

*cystitis

CornishTiger · 13/07/2023 06:13

Don’t bother with cranberry juice other than Biona. You can get it in health food shops and some asda ( saw it in an alternative section!). The other juices aren’t pure enough and have sugar.

Might be worth a ring around. You need a pharmacy under the minor ailments scheme who can cystitis treatment. Not all are qualified.

weetabixwithbutterandjam · 13/07/2023 06:17

I agree with pp about D-mannose. Can buy them on Amazon. I searched and searched for something to help my utis and these have helped me!

Lougle · 13/07/2023 06:17

I had a sudden UTI. I was peeing frank blood with clots. I phoned the surgery, then dropped in a urine sample. I got a call later that day to pick up antibiotics. However, in the meantime I had decided to drink as much as possible and by the time I picked up the antibiotics the symptoms had pretty much cleared. Very weird to get such a sudden UTI and to clear so quickly.

EnglishRose1320 · 13/07/2023 10:05

Thanks, going to try drinking 2 litres of water now and see if that helps. I managed to sleep for about two hours, sitting upright in bed- so feel a little less tired now.

I've contacted my gp surgery and hopefully a gp will be calling back with a prescription. We live quite rurally and lots of the online/chemist direct options don't appear to be available without driving to the closest city and I honestly don't feel well enough for that.

If you are stinging when peeing get a water bottle with a sports cap and squirt warm water on to yourself whist weeing. It really really helps. I have a dedicated bottle for such an occasion!!

I hope you have a speedy recovery and you have all of my sympathy!!!!

WaterBaby9 · 13/07/2023 10:32

I woke up with one the other day. Could wee fine but just as id finish it was like razor blades. Horrible. I got 2litres of water and sat in the bath and drank the whole thing weeing whenever i needed to and it helped soooo much. I did the same a couple hours later and it mustve flushed it out. (Obviously i showered once the bath was empty and cleaned it after) but for the relief it gave me, id do it again! My local chemist has a pay for service where they test and give antibiotics for urine infections for £35 but not many do. Keep drinking!
