Eek! Dd (20) has just been to Dr and he’s sent her straight to hospital w quinsy. We are 200 miles away as she’s in her uni city & is supposed to be moving into new accommodation tmw!
she seems ok / have just spoken to her & she’s on her way to a&e. I hope it’s not too traumatic 😬 anyone got experience of this?

DS1 has had this twice - second time involved an overnight in hospital. The pain was so bad that he hadn't drunk anything (not even swallowed his own saliva), so he had to be put on a drip to rehydrate him, as well as an antibiotic drip.

They will probably aspirate the pus from the infection, which will make her feel much better, pretty quickly.

Roselilly36 · 30/06/2023 16:42

Yes twice unfortunately, hospital is the right place, they may aspirate the quinsy, and your DD will probably be put on the emergency list for tonsillectomy. I hope you’re DD is feeling much better soon,

heatdeath · 30/06/2023 16:43

I had it; I was honestly so out of it with the high fever that I didn't realise how ill I was. In my case the abscess burst before the antibiotics kicked in & the fever broke immediately. It was pretty ghastly!

SmoothSeasDoNotMakeGoodSailors · 30/06/2023 16:45

Yes, I remember the pain well. My GP actually panicked and said he didn't know whether to send me to hospital or home with antibiotics. He did the latter in the end and I ended up sleeping solidly pretty much for 3 days. I hope she's feeling better soon.

Kiwiandstrawberries · 30/06/2023 16:45

Yes I had it years ago IV Antibiotics, IV fluids .Was unwell for a couple of weeks .Hope DD better soon .

KohlaParasaurus · 30/06/2023 16:45

I'm glad your DD's quinsy has been recognised and she is getting urgent treatment. It's an unpleasant condition but normally settles promptly with intravenous antibiotics and lancing the abscess in hospital.

Oneearringlost · 30/06/2023 16:59

Your poor, poor DD. Its wretched.

My DD was in Beijing on her uni year and was admitted to hospital ( amazing care actually, My DH is a consultant and ( with her permission), shared blood and swab results, ongoing care, scan results...
Again admitted in her final year to uni city hospital ( slightly less scary than China...)
Tonsillectomy as a 22 year old ( THE worst experience), but shortlived and she has never looked back. Tonsillectomy completely changed her life.

Push hard for this if tonsillitis is the cause of her Quinsey, as the parameters for NHS removal are influenced by Quinsey or episodes in hospital.
Sending best wishes to you and her.

JustDanceAddict · 30/06/2023 17:02

Thanks all! We are going away (thankfully in uk) on Weds and she’s meeting us at the nearest station - luckily we are in an air bnb so she can rest etc.
they must’ve caught it early as she’s def eaten 🤔 has had the sore throat since sun/Mon.

DD also had it twice. The first time during Covid, 111 hadn't recognised what it was, but she called me at 3 am, and I told her to get into an Uber to A&E as her throat was beginning to close up.

Her boyfriend was turned away at the door, (DD [croaking] "but I can't speak" A&E staff: "You don't need to speak"!) and within 10 minutes, a man in full hazmat gear was coming for her with a big needle. She was in on IV antibiotics for two nights, the first time, then only one night the second. Didn't take too long for her to perk up, but I think her immune system was quite low for awhile.

blueteaberry · 30/06/2023 17:36

Had it once. At first thought it was just a sore throat but after a few days could barely eat and couldn't talk and then could hardly drink water. It was so painful and kept me awake at night. Ended up going to a walk in centre where I was told that I should probably be in a&e instead. They gave me antibiotics but I only managed to swallow half of one as it was painful to swallow.
Eventually ended up going to a&e where I was put on a drip as I was very dehydrated. After a day in hospital they finally decided to drain it. And it was the best decision, I can honestly say the pain was gone instantly! I wish they had done it sooner. When they came round to offer food about an hour later I had a proper meal whereas previously I had refused all meals due to pain. I was discharged soon after that and had another big meal when back home. Hadn't had a proper meal for about a week and it all tasted so good!
If I ever end up with quinsy again I would ask them to drain the pus straight away. It sounds horrible but it was very quick and I didn't really feel anything!
Hope your daughter gets well soon!

FluffyPinkSocks · 30/06/2023 17:37

Had it 3 times as a teen, utterly disgusting! I can still remember the taste in my mouth. Always got antibiotics and slept it off as I was so drained, they burst themselves 🤢 have never had anything like it again thankfully.

Twiglets1 · 30/06/2023 17:46

I had one about 30 years ago and ended up in hospital as I couldn’t even swallow my own saliva it was so painful. I was fine once they burst it & just had to rest afterwards with a course of antibiotics.

lissie123 · 30/06/2023 17:49

My DD had it at 19 and was admitted to hospital and stayed for three days. She was on antibiotics and painkillers. Awful.

JustDanceAddict · 30/06/2023 17:50

@MurielThrockmorton - that sounds traumatic! Dd is now having antibiotics & bloods taken.

MurielThrockmorton · 30/06/2023 17:59

The second time was possibly more traumatic, her, and her boyfriend split up that evening, and when she realised she needed to go to hospital, everybody else was either in the middle of exams and couldn't make an early morning trip to A&E, or had already left university for the year, so she sat by herself crying on the phone to me for six hours until they saw her! She was pretty wiped out actually for a week or so afterwards now I come to think of it. The first time she said she'd get the train home (about a three hour journey) but that was massively unrealistic and I went to pick her up!

JustDanceAddict · 30/06/2023 18:08

@MurielThrockmorton 😞 must’ve been similar time of year. I feel bad cos if DD was here I’d be with her in hospital. Thankfully she is not too bad in herself and is just very bored waiting. Didn’t want us to come up.

I had it mid covid and my husband didn't take me seriously until I was struggling to breath. Very strange being in a deserted hospital with just staff about. When they lanced (it was the junior Dr's first time) my chair (like a dentist chair) was surrounded by staff wanting to watch and see it - it was impressive they said. It was agony and when the Dr said to me do you need a rest I said no please carry on and get every tiny bit out he thought I was brave. I wasn't quite the opposite as I couldn't face ever going through it again. I had the trip and antibiotics etc. I'd had it about 2 weeks before from memory but not as bad and the GP had given me steroids which did work quickly. Funnily enough after a life time of tonsillitis I haven't had it again since the Quinsey.

JustDanceAddict · 30/06/2023 20:02

Dd had antibiotics and steroid drip - now waiting!!

MurielThrockmorton · 30/06/2023 20:12

Hope she's okay and they get her to a ward soon (presuming she's staying)

JustDanceAddict · 30/06/2023 22:38

Complete change of diagnosis after bloods- has glandular fever and a secondary bacterial infection - not quinsy after all!
was discharged about an hour ago. All very bizarre! Has to go back in a few days for more bloods. LFTs weren’t looking good so no boozing for a while that’s for sure. Good job she’s coming home for a couple of months so I can look after her.

MurielThrockmorton · 01/07/2023 06:57

Oh blimey, happens to students a lot I think, one of my best friend's daughters had glandular fever this year too, she seems to be okay now though has been prone to various bugs. Hope the rest period isn't too painful for either of you (!) and she recovers soon. I'm looking forward to having mine back for a bit too, though I also enjoy the peace and not being woken at 4am when she returns home from partying!

Heatherbell1978 · 01/07/2023 07:10

I had it when I was 18 and end of first Uni year. Thankfully someone drove me home and dad is a GP so instantly diagnosed it. I was in hospital on a drip for 4 days as they couldn't lacerate it. So unpleasant. I remember being really ill for days in the lead up to it and just getting fobbed off as it being a normal sore throat.

Munchyseeds2 · 01/07/2023 12:59

DH had it 25 years ago and spent a few days in hospital
DD had it 5 years ago, had IV antibiotics for a day then home with lots of drugs,
It knocked them both sideways for a couple of weeks to be honest

Munchyseeds2 · 01/07/2023 13:03

Oh sorry just read your update, glad it's not quinsey
I had GF when I was 12, just remember being really tired and having no energy
Hope she feels better soon

JustDanceAddict · 01/07/2023 15:01

Thanks ladies! Thankfully she managed to move into new house & is now chilling on bed I hope.
she says she’s not too bad but more worried about liver - they’re gonna retest on Tues before we go away.
