Sinus pressure but no other symptoms - anyone else get this?

About 2 years ago I started getting really bad sinus pressure inside the top of my nose. No congestion and no other symptoms. I eventually saw an ENT consultant who did MRI scan and it was normal. He didn't have any explanation for it as my sinuses looked normal.

It ended up going away about 6 months later but has now come back with a vengeance. I have health anxiety so trying not to spiral into thinking that I'm dying of some weird head pressure thing!

Just wondering if anyone else gets this? I have really dry sinuses so think that doesn't help. I have barely any nasal secretions at all. I also grind my teeth and think that has got worse recently so thar also be contributing to it.

It's such a weird feeling. Pressure at the top of my nose that I can also sort of feel at the very top of my neck/under my chin, a bit like someone is mildly strangling me!

I suspect it is all anxiety related but wondered if anyone had any pearls of wisdom or have the same kind of thing as that would help me stop worrying.

You might have considered this, but could it be hayfever? Apparently there can be quite a range of weird symptoms associated with it, and if its been gone for 6 months only to recently return, the timing might fit for hayfever? Might not hurt to take an antihistimine if you haven't already tried this.

Me, at least 2-3 times a week at the moment. Nothing wrong with me, it's just like a massive pressure inside my head, sometimes left, sometimes right, sometimes both. Yesterday it was left, all day, no headache as such, just pressure.

I've been told it's probably a combination of sinus pressure and cervical something. Basically holding my head and neck in the wrong place. When I have the pressure, they crack and creak.

Do you take anything?

Moopsi · 26/06/2023 18:05

I did have awful tree pollen hayfever but it has pretty much gone. I've started taking my antihistamine nasal spray again but it doesn't seem to have helped. Although I know it can take a while to build up.

Sorry you are going through the same but it's a relief to hear I'm not the only one.

Having had cancer in the past anything health related that's unexplained tends to send my anxiety sky high. Which doesn't help!

I also know that the neck/under chin thing could be either due to teeth grinding or Globus which is anxiety related. But it makes me feel as though not enough blood is going to my head and I can't breathe. Even though I can!

I get something which sounds similar when I’m premenstrual. Do you cycle track? If not, it might be worth seeing if you can link it to hormonal fluctuations. Apparently it can get worse as you enter peri meno too.

Megifer · 26/06/2023 18:17

Yes, convinced myself I had a brain tumour. Paid for a private MRI and consultations as I was spiralling. Had dying partner sex with DP the night before my results.....

Only to be told all was fine and it was likely connected to subtle weather pressure changes and "sometimes we have no clinical explanation for the strange things our body does" 🙄

I still get it to this day, nothing makes it go away really it just eases then comes back.

Moopsi · 26/06/2023 18:19

Thank you so much for the reassurance. I am likely perimenopausal and due my period so that's another reason it could be.

My brain is still convinced I have a brain tumour/blood clot/imploding head and I'm going to die though.

I also clench my jaw and have TMD flare ups, dentist said that can cause pressure in the head too. If you're a grinder its worth mentioning at your next dental check up

ColdHandsHotHead · 26/06/2023 18:56

do you get dizzy? Pressure sensations in the head are a symptom of Meniere's disease.

Moopsi · 26/06/2023 18:56

Yes I grind my teeth too. Gosh I'm a mess. I've actually had botox in my masseter muscles a few months ago so wonder if it's wearing off.

That's interesting as my mum had that and had sinus trouble all her life.

I had vertigo 2 years ago but don't get it any more. No hearing loss so they ruled out Menieres. They thought it was a reactivation of labrynthitis which I had 5 years ago.

I had similar that turned out to be an infection at the tip of a root on a tooth. Dentist picked it up on xray, 3 lots of antibiotics and 2 hour extraction as it was so deep 😬

Moopsi · 26/06/2023 19:37

I also have a newly erupted wisdom tooth. Honestly listing it all here has made realise what an idiot I am. I have about 5/6 different non-scary reasons for the sinus pressure but my stupid brain goes straight to "you're going to die".

I used some saline spray and that seems to have helped. I don't know why my nose and eyes get so, so dry. I never ever need tissues and get hardly any snot ever. Even with hayfever my nose just gets blocked/swollen inside it doesn't run. I feel like I need to sprat some kind of lubrication up there everyday but don't think it exists!

I have a lot of sinus problems but I always get painful sinuses before my period so would definitely see if you can track to maybe around ovulation or period. I take a decongestant to help with mine each month.

Daisypod · 26/06/2023 19:46

Ditto the tooth infection. I was convinced I had sinus infection but doctor won't see until you've seen the dentist. Went and she x rayed and big infection above a molar. 2 lots of antibiotics and awaiting root canal to get it sorted. I had zero tooth ache!

Moopsi · 26/06/2023 19:47

Weird how hormones can cause sinus pressure?!

OP posts:
adjsavedmylife · 26/06/2023 20:49

I know! I also find decongestants help, the pseudoephedrine based ones not the others. Hope you find something to take the edge off soon, it’s rubbish!

Moopsi · 26/06/2023 21:17

The weird thing is that my nose is completely clear. I can breathe through it 100% and no blockages. Just pressure.

Hi did you ever get to the bottom of this? I'm experiencing the same! Can breathe completely fine but all of a sudden have major pressure in the top of my nose!

Moopsi · 01/07/2024 22:40

Weird timing. It went away and came back a few days ago! I think it's some kind of swelling/inflammation but not sure what it's caused by.

Similar time of year too!! Interesting! It must be hayfever surely! X

Moopsi · 01/07/2024 23:55

Maybe but I'm taking prescription dose fexafenadine and an antihistamine and steroid nasal spray. The pain is also in my right eyebrow as well as the sinus. So annoying.

Have you had a comprehensive eye test including eye pressure check @Moopsi

Likesomemorecash · 02/07/2024 00:11

Try nasal irrigation using a neti pot. The saline solution thins mucus so easier to get rid of.

I have always been prone to sinus problems, but majorly snotty rather than dry. Also, try using the back of an electric toothbrush along your sinus passages at the top of your cheeks and over your eyebrows. It helps loosen anything bunged up
