Sinus pressure but no other symptoms - anyone else get this?

About 2 years ago I started getting really bad sinus pressure inside the top of my nose. No congestion and no other symptoms. I eventually saw an ENT consultant who did MRI scan and it was normal. He didn't have any explanation for it as my sinuses looked normal.

It ended up going away about 6 months later but has now come back with a vengeance. I have health anxiety so trying not to spiral into thinking that I'm dying of some weird head pressure thing!

Just wondering if anyone else gets this? I have really dry sinuses so think that doesn't help. I have barely any nasal secretions at all. I also grind my teeth and think that has got worse recently so thar also be contributing to it.

It's such a weird feeling. Pressure at the top of my nose that I can also sort of feel at the very top of my neck/under my chin, a bit like someone is mildly strangling me!

I suspect it is all anxiety related but wondered if anyone had any pearls of wisdom or have the same kind of thing as that would help me stop worrying.

Do you grind your teeth at night?

Moopsi · 02/07/2024 08:08

Yes I've had a thorough eye test and even head MRI (unrelated to these symptoms).

I don't have any mucus at all. My nose just doesn't seem to get snotty! It feels dry all the time.

Yes I do grind my teeth at night. Not sure why the sinus pressure/pain comes and goes though as I grind my teeth every night! I use a mouth guard for sleeping.

I have a saline nasal rinse thingy. It seems to help for about 10 minutes so I don't often bother.

Has the weather changed from dry to wet where you live. Try breathing above hot water to ease sinuses

This happened to me a couple of years ago. I went through lots of nasal sprays and eventually it passed, thankfully.

Definitely worth seeing GP. I’ve had one sided sinus issues for over a year now and kept getting infections. Had MRI and I have a completely blocked maxillary sinus and having FESS next week to clear it all out. I have a polyp which has blocked the drainage. Caused all sorts of pressure issues in my eye and teeth! Speak to GP. I put it down to hayfever and did Neti pots and all sorts for bloody months. Was also convinced it was tooth related but nope! I also had the insane eyebrow pressure and they were worried I have a sinus clot for a while too. I’m perfectly healthy never had any issues but you need someone medical to review it - no one will be able to answer it. I was genuinely shocked when they said MRI showed blockage I expected them to be like it’s totally fine 😂

clearly didn’t read - saw you had MRI. Was that for your sinus thought? Was it recently?

Not really wet but has gone from sunny and warm to grey.

I saw ENT and had MRI 3 years ago. He found I had a deviated septum and thought that the pain was caused by the turbinates in my nose pressing on a nerve. Said only surgery would fix it. I went to see a cranial osteopath and it got a lot better but comes back every now and then. Not sure if the osteopath improvement was psychosomatic or not.

Then last year I had unrelated eye problems and had an MRI in December which was normal. I have health anxiety so any pain in the head means I'm dying of a brain tumour!

But the ENT also said that the deviated septum wouldn't cause sinus pressure which I didn't really understand as that was the main symptom I was having. He was a bit puzzled by it all but said it was nothing to worry about.

I don't think it can be anything like a blockage or polyp as it has come and gone for three years now and I've had about 6 months without any symptoms.

I think it's most likely some kind of mild inflammation, not helped by having dry nasal passages, and made worse by the deviated septum.

The main thing for me is not to worry about it as health anxiety makes me imagine all sorts of things.

I'm no expert at all but your description of the areas of pain did make me think of the trigger points and referred pain in this diagram. I do sympathise as I have trouble with my sinuses too.

Thanks. My neck is actually stiff in those areas!

Not what you’re experiencing, but I get bad sinus pains in the night if I’ve got a bit dehydrated during the day and then drink alcohol - I don’t mean getting drunk, I mean like one small can of beer. Then I also get a hangover the whole of next day. Which sucks.
Anyway, that’s just one more ’sinuses are weird’ story to add to the others.

My teeth grinding gives me what feels like ear and sinus pressure sometimes. I went to an ENT, had MRI etc and it was diagnosed as due to teeth grinding.

A mouth guard at night has mostly sorted it out for me but in times of stress it's not enough.
