ANYBODY HAVE THE CURE TO HAYFEVER YET?!

ShellaB · 10/06/2023 08:42

I literally cannot deal with this allergy to pollen anymore. Every flipping year I think "nope not gonna get it this year".

I have my two children to take care of (the eldest being two) and it's been a lot more difficult to do so with this hayfever.

I just want to rip my whole head off omgggggg. This should be classed as an illness. I know all these pharmaceutical companies are making a gold mine from these allergy medicines, and if there was a cure then blah blah blahhh, but I'm yet to find one that is actually effective.

They can find a way to get to space, but can't find a cure for hayfever. They can create AI and all these stuff.... Even fake meat!! But cannot have a cure for hayfever.

Seriously man I'm suffering so bad here.. anyway I've had my little rant. Does anyone know of anything that really helps hayfever so that I can function normally throughout the day!!! I've heard of the one where they give you doses of pollen, but isn't that like £3000? Please I'm desperate 😭.

It maybe coincidence but I find Aldi brand citrizine hydrochloride works best for me. One every morning even if no symptoms, two on a bad day. They also help with reducing allergic reactions to insect bites.

Local honey is also nice but I’m not sure if it genuinely works.

DS has severe allergies including tree and grass pollen and all their related fruits/seeds/nuts.

He's been better this year than for years (he's still awful hurt I mean he can at least sleep and see, normally his eyes swell shut).

He has just finished a 3 year immunotherapy protocol from St Thomas' for tree and grass pollen. But also:

180mg fexofenadine
Another generic antihistamine
Steroid nasal spray (he gets on best with pirinase, was prescribed dymista which is the best but makes him sick)
Air purifier in bedroom and living room (not Dyson, read reviews on which)
Montelukast
Steroid asthma inhaler
Phenergan at night (if can source any)

And when things are awful go to the beach for the day (we're in London), have even taken him out of school to go when it's been horrific, plus a short course off oral steroids.

I cannot stress enough the relief he gets from being at the sea, and how mentally important it is to get a day of respite

ShellaB · 10/06/2023 09:09

Acupuncture worked for me for going into labour, so I wouldn't be surprised if it worked for hayfever too.

I should really be taking my allergy tablets 6 months prior to symptoms, but always think I won't get it this year.... It's year 28 😭

Allivia is fexofenadine which used to be prescription only. However, the one in the shops is only 120mg whilst the one on prescription is 180mg.

I've been having the 180mg for years over prescription and it's not been working this year. Doctors advised me I can take 2 off label if I need to for particularly bad days.

Something like that may be worth a try even if it's only 2 of the 120mg you can buy in the shops

My DH has it very badly at the moment. Takes 180mg fexofenadine/ Allevia. He is still suffering very badly though, especially with eye irritation.. looks awful, I’m lucky I’ve never had it!

I take 180mg of Fexodenadine a day and it's not been helping. My dr advised me I can take 2 a day off label on a bad day. May be worth asking his GP if he can do the same

Shower and wash hair before bed, to make sure no pollen gets into bed with you.

All laundry dried indoors with a drier so that pollen can't stick to your damp laundry.

Every morning some local honey on toast. It is said that the local pollen the bees use is a sort of vaccination for your system.

DS has reacted to honey based on things he's so to do be careful

Also, change clothes once you get indoors, and don't rewear clothes you've worn outside (apart from coats, for practical reasons) so that you're not bringing more pollen indoors (obvs I mean wash them, not bon them).

Use AC unit and keep windows shut to keep the pollen out of your home. As pp said, get an air purifier and just keep moving it round different rooms.

My son has fenoxfenadine on prescription. I buy it from Amazon as it's cheapest there

Babymamamama · 10/06/2023 09:30

Fexodenadine didn’t work for me. I like Benadryl acrivastine but only take when I have symptoms. It works pretty much immediately. Also use nasal spray every morning. That one is obligatory.

Yes, of course, be careful. Also no honey for babies under 1 year old.

TidyDancer · 10/06/2023 09:40

I posted this on the other thread running at the moment but DP gets very severe symptoms and he had the kenalog injection at a private GP in Herts. It's been a complete miracle for him. I'm lucky that I get it less severely (although not having much fun with it at the moment!) but DP was barely functioning before the jab. DS is upset he can't have it as still too young!

Thank you, I think he has an appointment next week so will tell him.

emmeline7725 · 10/06/2023 09:52

The kenalog injection has changed my life! I had it last year for the first time and it was the first summer I can remember that I could actually spend time outdoors without getting horrific symptoms. I've had it again this year and it's amazing. It also solved my problem with prickly heat.

HBGKC · 10/06/2023 10:02

Another vote for trying local-ish honey. My father has had horrendous hay-fever his whole life. Early this year my mum paid for a big jar of local-ish honey (apparently it doesn't need to be produced super-locally, just not 'blended EU honeys...), he's been having a spoon a day and has had no symptoms this year - unbelievable!

In your shoes I'd also try acupuncture. Even if you needed to have it done once a year, if it worked it'd be worth it. Hay-fever is AWFUL.

ShellaB · 10/06/2023 11:03

Is the kenalog injection privatised only?

OP posts:
emmeline7725 · 10/06/2023 11:30

Yes I believe so. I get mine from an aesthetics clinic that does botox and stuff.

GayPareeee · 10/06/2023 11:34

Yes, was banned by NHS due to impact on immune system and risk of complications from flu/chicken pox/shingles etc

BBQBiceps · 10/06/2023 11:36

cut out alcohol if you drink it

ShellaB · 10/06/2023 11:03

Yes the NHS stopped providing it a few years ago. Google for hay fever injection and you should get some options come up near you.

Moonshine5 · 10/06/2023 11:50

Don't all go hysterical but I know personally 2 people whose hay fever was massively reduced by taking homeopathic remedies (around £6). I have no vested interest just genuine support. PM me I can send you details of the shop. Again. I am not advertising. I know it was life changing for one of them. (In a good way). Good luck

Theygolowwegohigh · 10/06/2023 13:11

I also had the kenalog injection last year and it was miraculous. Worth every penny.

I've started with hayfever symptoms in the last 48hrs. They've come on really suddenly and I'm really really struggling. I've booked another kenalog injection with the same place as last year.

People that don't get it, or get it mildly just don't understand how poorly it can make you.

Theygolowwegohigh · 10/06/2023 13:12

I just need to shuffle on until I can have the jab. Couldn't get booked in until Thursday.

I love warm weather and we've a nice stretch this week of it were I'm not even going to be able to play indoors with my youngest, never mind us all being outdoors annoying the sun. 😭

Fleur405 · 10/06/2023 13:15

you speak to a pharmacist or GP you can get prescription strength steroid sprays if your symptoms are bad.

comeondover · 10/06/2023 13:20

I've said this on another thread, and I think it was on mn that I originally read about it - nettle tea! Two teabags, steep for 10+ minutes, twice a day. Really helps.
