Foods that are laxative

I’ve got sciatica and pooping is painful right now, and my poops are quite hard. I could take a laxative to help this, but would like to change my diet first. I already eat home cooked food with lots of vegetables, and an apple a day, sometimes other fruit. I also exercise a lot and drink a lot of water. I’ve stewed plums and rhubarb, but it doesn’t seem to have helped. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Jerusalem artichokes have a very laxative effect. They are called fartichokes.

This made me laugh out loud 🤣

OttoGraph · 31/05/2023 10:28

A sprinkling of this on your oats or prunes

but stay home the first time you take it to gauge how much you need or not

5 unsulphered apricots every morning with half a teaspoon of the below package and a pint of water makes great soft 💩😂

It does nothing for me, was taking it because I was supplementing vit D, and was hoping for some bonus side effects, but sadly not!

Which form of magnesium did you take? It’s only magnesium citrate that will have a laxative effect. Maleate, oxide or any other form won’t.

Pretty sure it was citrate, because everything I'd read had recommended the others forms to avoid the laxative effect, whereas I thought that would be a bonus 😄

Bread with a lot of poppy seeds in is quite good.

MinxieMax · 31/05/2023 11:29

This is what I have fibre wise every day and never have a problem (touch wood). I have diverticulosis so must ensure that things run smoothly!

Home made smoothie with berries, kiwi, oats, spinach, milled linseed, milled chia seeds made with water.

Weetabix (Summer) with linseed/chia seed. Porridge the same in Winter.

Live yogurt/kefir.

Otherwise just an ordinary diet, but I don't eat much veg, oops.

MrsClatterbuck · 31/05/2023 11:33

I have been told chia seeds help. Personally I find a bowl of fruit and fibre the night before helps in the morning. Also lifting your legs while on the loo also helps. I keep a stool sorry for the pun in the bathroom for this purpose

tootsierubs · 31/05/2023 11:36

Courgettes apparently, as I recently found out!

SpringNotSprung · 31/05/2023 11:39

@Mustardfan You say you have sciatica. I wonder what pain relief you have been prescribed. If cocodamol, it will constipate you. A low dose of Amitryptiline might be better?

Some Laxido or Fybogel may help.

Phoebo · 31/05/2023 12:02

Prunes or Kiwi. Bran. In general make a fruit & vege smoothie. Drink plenty of water

A box of sugar free sweets from Aldi..
Ime.. Make sure you are at home if you try this method...

That's so true 🫣

I got the blackcurrant and liquorice ones to suck on a long journey once.

Never again 🤔🤣

Figs work for me!

Ah shame! I guess we’re all different. Sorry it didn’t work for you.

stardust777 · 31/05/2023 12:17

Things that work for me:

  • Upping water intake
  • A few tablespoons of natural yoghurt with sliced banana before bed
  • Houmous
  • adding flaxseed oil to smoothies

Also love this Kombucha drink from Holland and Barrett

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions. I’m going to try prunes and prune juice. I’ve got a bag of fresh pears that I was going to stew, though people seem to be saying that tinned fruit has worked best for them? I’ll also try flax seed and chia seed. I already have a pint of water when I wake up, and I also have a stool. Might also try some of the other suggestions - too many to list now.

Chia seeds

Christmascracker0 · 31/05/2023 18:43

Chia seeds - you can make chia seed pudding the night before and have it for breakfast to get things moving!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 31/05/2023 18:44

Wine night before.Clears you right out in the morning.

Teaslurpershutup · 31/05/2023 18:49

Tinned prunes with yoghurt. Mush more palatable.

Mustardfan · 01/06/2023 22:10

what is the best time of day to have prune juice? If I drink it in the morning will it help the following morning? Or is it best in the evening?

Mama2six · 01/06/2023 22:20

My Nan swore by tinned tomatoes and prune juice (not together mind) my kids wouldn’t have the prunes but the tomatoes worked

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 01/06/2023 22:46
