Foods that are laxative

I’ve got sciatica and pooping is painful right now, and my poops are quite hard. I could take a laxative to help this, but would like to change my diet first. I already eat home cooked food with lots of vegetables, and an apple a day, sometimes other fruit. I also exercise a lot and drink a lot of water. I’ve stewed plums and rhubarb, but it doesn’t seem to have helped. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Golden linseeds are useful, I soak a tablespoon in bit of hot water for half an hour and just neck them, slimey goodness.Wink
Also dried apricots prunes, figs of course.
Try to look at everything you eat and add or swap in fibre. Baked potato instead of mash, seedy bread instead of white.
Lots of peas or beans with everything and a satsuma at any opportunity.
Make sure to drink plenty of fluids too!

Quorn

MerryMarigold · 30/05/2023 22:35

Ripe bananas. Syrup of figs.

SabbatWheel · 30/05/2023 22:36

These sweets with malitol in from Aldi do it for me. Or chocolate e.g. Cadbury Fruit and Nut.

Those M&S sweets with no sugar - I think it’s the sorbitol artificial sweetener that is the laxative.

I can fully second this one. Don’t ask me how I know. Just don’t eat the full pack and then start your journey on the motorway. 😳

I had rectal prolapse repair about ten years ago. Not fun post operatively. I would highly recommend tinned pear by the can full.

SgtBilko · 30/05/2023 22:46

A tablespoon of chia seeds in breakfast cereal or yoghurt. Don’t take them without enough liquid though.
Prune juice
Prunes - plums not the same effect
Pears
Plenty of veg for lunch and dinner
Fruit lunch and dinner - berries are good
Lentils
Sweet potatoes
nuts

All bananas bung me up but if I’m constipated eating an entire punnet of grapes sorts me out.

Identifyingasadolphin · 30/05/2023 22:49

Another vote for pears - always.

Also drinking a pint of water on waking gets the peristaltic movement going.

TheOGCCL · 30/05/2023 22:53

Kiwi fruit and chia seeds

CelticSong · 30/05/2023 22:56

A bowl of porridge every day. You will never be constipated!

2bazookas · 30/05/2023 22:57

Figs (the semi=soft preserved ones)
Carton pineapple juice
Prunes (tinned will do)

Beautiful3 · 30/05/2023 22:58

Filter coffee.

TheOhGodOfHangovers · 30/05/2023 22:59

Late FIL used to swear by pontefract cakes.

For me it’s grapes, pears, chocolate or tomato soup.
Also one memorable occasion where I chewed a full pack of Wrigley’s Extra Spearmint gum (xylitol) but I’ve never dared use it again so don’t know if they’ve changed the recipe since.

ichundich · 30/05/2023 23:01

Apples, pears, kiwi, peppers, raspberries, chilli, linseed, chiaseeds, walnuts, peanuts, ryevita, onions, lentils, peas, celery

wibblewobbleball · 30/05/2023 23:09

Chia seeds. Gods gift to people with constipation. Gently work to move things through by drawing water in to the gut to make it softer when you do go, and also form a gel like structure to physically clear the way through. Tasteless. Tiny. No real impact on blood sugar. Brilliant things!

Jerusalem artichokes have a very laxative effect. They are called fartichokes.

They give you incredibly painful gas. Seriously painful.
God they're so good chipped though.

DeirdreRashid · 30/05/2023 23:16

A fag then a coffee with your feet up on a stool 👌🏼

UndercoverCop · 30/05/2023 23:16

Coffee, pears, prunes (baby pouches are kept for emergencies here), fennel tea works very quickly

CloudlessSunnyDays · 30/05/2023 23:16

In the childrens rehabilitation centre

kiwi fruit

I think that's the healthiest option too.

for me an excessive amount of peanuts has that affect.

Speckson · 30/05/2023 23:16

A tablespoonful of wheat bran on your cereal every morning.
Live in a hard water area.

Orders76 · 30/05/2023 23:17

Coffee and sugar free Aldi sweets, only try when you know you'll be home!

caringcarer · 30/05/2023 23:21

A glass of fresh orange juice with bits in.
Apple sauce.
Carrots.

JustMaggie · 30/05/2023 23:22

Live culture yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut. Drink lots of water and eat lots of fruit, the sweeter and riper the better. Grapes, figs, prunes...
