He has a runny nose, occasional cough, breathing fast and very hot (just taken it, it's 38.9 and he had calpol at 7am.
He's distressed and miserable, having some breastfeeds but can't breathe very well through nose so hard for him.
I'm carrying him about all the time which is hard as ds1 has half term too.
Do we do doctors or will that be a waste of time/ make him feel worse unnecessarily?
What do you usually do?

Am panicking about temp, that's the main thing

thankyou

Calpol and nose drops. If they can't breath they can't feed, and its a horrible feeling.
38.9 isn't too far above normal, cool down with tepid bathing.

Piffle · 20/02/2008 11:16

temp is ok if he is drinking and keeping calpol etc down
how old is he? you cna alternate nurofen and calpol if he is over 6 mths
Also try medised if he is older as it dries secretions as well as making them a bit drowsy, so they rest and can feed/sleep a little easier
Is his nose running freely, get a snot sucker bulb and some saline to decongest him yourself.
Worth a trip to doc if he is younger than 6 mths and the fast breathing carries on

Piffle · 20/02/2008 11:16

strip him down a bit cover with a light sheet lots of cuddles bless him its awful

sundew · 20/02/2008 11:17

Hi flightattendant can't help much but my dd2 always has high tempertaures - over 39 regularly but that is just normal for her. The breathing fast could well just be because he has a temp - have you tried the usual - stripping off etc + depending on the age he could have nurofen.

Only you know your ds though - if you are concerned ask to speak to the nurse / GP at your surgery.

Flllightattendant · 20/02/2008 11:18

I have not got nose drops. Should I be alternating with nurofen or something, haven't got any of that either...trip to chemist is due anyway I think!

Can they be this poorly with just a cold?

... you'd think I'd never had a child before.

make sure he's not too wrapped up. If very worried then tepid sponging down may help (not sure how old he is?). Keep up liquid intake - you'll know how much bm he's had and whether he needs som ewater too.

I hate it when they are ill

Twiglett · 20/02/2008 11:18

he's got a cold .. he hasn't got that high a temp and you gave him calpol 4 hours ago so it's not like it's medicated

strip him down to vest and nappy
give him nurofen / more calpol
give him fluids
breastmilk up his nose to loosen the snot and help him breathe

and stop panicking

Twiglett · 20/02/2008 11:19

actually hang fire on bm up nose .. think I'm thinking sticky eye .. need saline up nose

crumpet · 20/02/2008 11:19

steam helps blocked noses - can you turn a shower on and really steam up the bathroom?

Flllightattendant · 20/02/2008 11:19

Sorry x posts, you lot are great thankyou

He's 8 months

will put him under sheet with vest on
bath when he wakes...dozing on lap at mo

lol twig!

OP posts:
Twiglett · 20/02/2008 11:21

actually I've thought it through and I'm right first time

breast milk in eyes cures sticky eyes
breast milk up nose softens snot and anti-bacterial properties help (although harder because the baby can get frustrated at seeing nipple pointing up nose and not into mouth)

Twiglett · 20/02/2008 11:22

google back-up for bm up nose

marmadukescarlet · 20/02/2008 11:23

Calpol only lasts for 4 hours.

put very light clothing on him, including socks keep ambient temp of room warm.

Pop him in a not to hot bath a splash with water, it is the evaporation of the water on the hot skin which aids cooling not the immersion in it.

Hope he feels better soon.

hunkermunker · 20/02/2008 11:23

Don't use nipple to get breastmilk up nose or in eye for that matter. Use a medicine syringe - express a bit into the palm of your hand first.

Hope he's better soon. Use Medised if he's really snuffly too, INSTEAD of Calpol though - can use it with Nurofen.

Flllightattendant · 20/02/2008 11:24

Wowzers! Thats amazing.
His nose is very runny though, wih he could blow.

AitchTwoOh · 20/02/2008 11:27

dunno, though, my doc was very firm that if the baby was under 1 year and my spider senses were tingling then i should get her to see him... how worried are you? don't the GPs do little emergency appointments for kids? they told me i could always get seen within an hour if it was dd.

Flllightattendant · 20/02/2008 11:27

Thanks marm and hunker. shopping list:

squirty bulb thing (lost ours!)
another syringe, ditto
medised yay
nurofen

Glad not having to go to dr though. Always seems unfair to drag them out in the cold and then a sauna of a waiting room.

AitchTwoOh · 20/02/2008 11:28

just suck it out FA, be a man!

Flllightattendant · 20/02/2008 11:28

Ooh Aitch.

I'm not sure. I guess the usual when they are hot. He hasn't a rash or anything, will give it another hour or two and see...it's only been since yesterday evening really.

Poor thing.

Piffle · 20/02/2008 11:29

be a MAN? MY DP could break the 4 minute mile if he was put in the role of snot sucking

Flllightattendant · 20/02/2008 11:31

Do people really do it? I did with ds1 when he was about 15 hours old. A measure of overwhelming love I guess. 8 months is a bit icky though...
