None alcoholic fatty liver

I’m waiting to see my GP but I’m very surprised by these results, I’m slim , very active and drink about 6 units of alcohol a week.
Everything I’ve read suggests ‘lifestyle changes’ but I don’t think I’ve got any to make.
Has anyone else been in the same boat?

My 25 year old son. Diet is a lot of fat and convenience food.

brokenstone · 22/05/2023 19:54

How much sugar and ultra processed foods do you eat?

WaspStungMe · 22/05/2023 20:01

@brokenstone very little, we grow our own veg and I cook from scratch. Not a pudding eater either, it’s a mystery.

Could you have an autoimmune disease such as primary biliary Choliongitis? Do you have any autoimmune diseases?

Livinghappy · 22/05/2023 20:05

Is this the result of a blood test or scan? If blood test what levels are high?

What caused you to have the test, what symptoms did you have?

WaspStungMe · 22/05/2023 20:09

@Livinghappy a blood test high AST and ALT, cholesterol too.
I’ve got a GP phone consult in a fortnight
@AnythingMuppetTM no existing conditions that I’m aware of, I feel fine

I keep testing high for bilirubin and am diagnosed with nafld but have had MRIs ultrasounds and several biopsies and they find nothing. I just ignore the calls for more tests now as biopsies are painful and always negative,

Livinghappy · 22/05/2023 20:15

Have you had any colds/infections recently? Was GGT high?

A fibroscan is usually needed to determine liver damage as bloods can only be indicative of some conditions. You could contact the Liver Trust who have a nurse on their help line if you wanted to chat through results.

WaspStungMe · 22/05/2023 20:20

@Livinghappy I’m not sure, is that the same as globulin? If so it was normal.

My GP is good, he’s very careful so he’ll probably refer me for a scan.

The Liver Trust is a great shout, thank you.

My friend was diagnosed with this in her mid 40s. She's very slim (size 6-8) and active. Looks much younger than her years. However, I don't think her diet is great. I was always amazed she could eat so much fattening food and remain slim. She's managing it now with a low fat die.

Dontlistitonfacebook · 22/05/2023 20:33

Has non alcoholic fatty liver actually been diagnosed though? There are many other causes of high AST and ALT.

Has anyone told you you have Gilbert's?

AutisticLegoLover · 22/05/2023 20:40

My mum has this and has regular fibroscans. No risk factors but told it's genetic. She's not on any treatment and it's causing her no issues despite being severe. My liver tests are usually deranged too and I'm having repeat ones done tomorrow. My diet is reasonable and vegetarian, no alcohol, no smoking, low cholesterol, very active, slim 🤷🏼‍♀️

staryellow · 22/05/2023 20:44

There's a theory that some people have a lower 'fat threshold' than others. Most people put on weight around their bodies first and only after that start storing it in their organs. But others may start sorting it in organs straightaway. It's a possible explanation for why some thin people get type 2 diabetes. If you Google the Newcastle Study re type 2, you should find some info. It's suggested that for people in this boat, the aim should be to keep weight even a bit lower than it is when problems initially present.

I've no idea if this has any relevance to your situation. I had gestational diabetes in my pregnancies despite being on the low end of the BMI normal range and read up on all this then. (My diet's not bad now but for much of my life was v carby and I've never been one for exercise.)

WoofWoofBeachLife · 22/05/2023 20:48

I was told I had NAFLD after and ultrasound for gallstones. I was told 2 years after the scan as an afterthought at a GP appointment for something else. I have no idea what it means, as in how damaged my liver is and I wasn't offered any blood tests or anymore information. I since changed GP practices so I will ask our new Dr about bloods. My diet was awful for a while, a lot of fat doing Atkins or Keto LC HF and I did a lot of baking during lockdown. When I was younger I also was a binge drinker right up until 5 years ago. I don't drink now. Hope you get the information you need xx

lljkk · 22/05/2023 20:59

How active are you, what are your height & bust-waist-hips numbers, OP?

blood test high AST and ALT, cholesterol too

Do you mind me asking why you had those tests, and what the specific results were? I'm as intrigued as you are. I assume you have zero symptoms you can notice otherwise? How old are you?

Wildspace · 23/05/2023 05:55

I was told I was borderline NAFLD on a scan. ALT is high. But I’ve got an underlying blood condition that potentially has impact on liver. Generally I have a great diet but my also both my cholesterol are borderline too.

greenacrylicpaint · 23/05/2023 06:01

I had something like that a few years ago.

no symproms liver bloods off the chart, ultrasound showed enlarged liver.

I was advised on low fat, low fructose, low calorie diet for 8 weeks before repeat tests. no alkohol (I don't drink anyway).

all was good at the second test.
drs suspected it was inflammation following a viral infection.

oh, and I was asked if I take herbal supplements, macha, curcumal (and another i can't remember)

Lulu1919 · 23/05/2023 06:49

You could be me ...
I had a scan yesterday to test the rigidity of my liver
I also take statins for high cholesterol..but it's the hereditary type !?!?
Fed up of scans and blood tests
I'm 55
Not over weight
Good diet
Very light drinker

Bubbles254 · 23/05/2023 12:04

Lots of medications can affect your liver including the bill control pill, vitamin A, some antibiotics, some SSRIs and some herbal supplements.

vivainsomnia · 23/05/2023 13:26

This is me OP. I have the most lie fat diet you can have, no alcohol at all, yet have high liver results and cholesterol. It's not so uncommon. It's genetic.

Saying that I started to take omega 3 fish oil, reduced sugar almost completely and my latest results had gone down. Still a bit higher than it should be but ok.
