bellalou1234 · 18/05/2023 19:04

Hi everyone, I've been to gp as I keep catching horrendous monthly colds, the gp is going to run some tests including my thyroid as I have gained a lot of weight in a sort space of time, heavy periods. Could anyone with under active describe some of the symtoms

OP posts:
Wavingnotdrown1ng · 18/05/2023 19:16

Feeling exhausted and cold all the time, hair falling out, insomnia and night waking and depression. Also, weight gain.

Ailsamary · 18/05/2023 19:20

Mine were mainly extreme tiredness, constantly feeling cold(despite everyone laughing at me cos I wore a lot of jumpers) i put on a stone a year until I was diagnosed but nothing since.
I am not aware of anything otherwise although once medicated it keeps the worst of the symptoms away.
Also don't expect to drop the weight if they put you on meds - it doesn't work like that

Loverofoxbowlakes · 18/05/2023 19:21

Tired ALL THE TIME. Like never ever feeling rested. Insomnia. Weight gain. Cold. Even on the warmest sunny day sitting on a beach. Freezing. Night waking.

heathspeedwell · 18/05/2023 19:22

An underactive thyroid typically makes it hard for your body to adapt to temperature changes, so as well as being colder than other people in the cold, you might also feel uncomfortably hot in a warm room or on a sunny day.

The good news is that if you do have an underactive thyroid then the thyroxine they give you starts to make you feel better really quickly - within a few days you'll have more energy. It also means that your other prescriptions will be free of charge, so it's not all bad.

Hope you feel better soon!

I do get tired, but work shifts, hair is fine as is sleep on the whole and I'm normally hot...do have low mood and anxiety. They're all testing my hba1c and b12..

bellalou1234 · 18/05/2023 19:26

I don't tolerate warm or hot weather well

OP it's not just tired though. For me it was bone-aching exhaustion. I could come in from work at 5, nap for 2 hours, quick tea and in bed by 9pm and still feel shattered. And cold. All the time.

No that's definitely not me...I'll await the blood test results

Yeah I cheered when I realised I would get free prescriptions. Nowadays it saves me a fortune

Whorrafeeeling · 18/05/2023 21:46

For me there was nothing I could have told you other than I was tired, but I had a third baby in 4 years too so that was to be expected. But the day I took my first thyroxine tablet it felt like a weight had been lifted from my head and shoulders that had been keeping me pinned to the sofa.

Vallmo47 · 18/05/2023 21:50

Extreme tiredness (sleeping 10 hours a night and 3 hour nap in day)
Extreme weight gain (3/4 stone) without changing diet
Extremely low in mood/ irritated/ depressed

Good luck OP
The medication really helps but losing the weight again was hell because it took years to get the correct diagnosis/dosages.

DustyLee123 · 18/05/2023 21:52

My only symptom was not being able to get pregnant.

WordtoYoMumma · 18/05/2023 21:53

Tiredness was my main symptom. And brain fog. I was also diagnosed with depression at the time but later read that it might have been a thyroid symptom.

Spidey66 · 18/05/2023 22:04

The symptoms are gradual and put down as age or not serious eg weight gain, dry skin, low mood, not tolerating cold, by the sufferer as much as GPs. The symptoms are similar to the menopause and without bloods are often put down to that. My symptoms were borderline for a couple of years before the diagnosis. I'm on thyroxine for about 5 years now but still a fat depressed cow.

Pretty much the same

I said years ago that my thyroid was out. Every female in my family has had thyroid problems
Eventually my TSH got to the not acceptable level and they gave me a homeopathic dose of levo (25mg, I'm 5ft 10...)
I badgered and am on 75mg now, TSH 1.2 last time. Don't feel any less tired TBH, and my feet and legs are still always freezing
Apparently it's hashimotos I have

Woohoo99 · 18/05/2023 22:17

My wrists were aching (carpal tunnel)
Extreme tiredness & emotional.
1 stone weight gain after maintaining my weight for 4 years.
Brain fog.

Yep, and dry eyes and constipation too. It makes you feel really crap. Even on Levothyroxine I've never felt the same as I did before I got it.

caringcarer · 18/05/2023 22:26

Yes, I'd forgotten carpel tunnel. I had an operation for that about 12 years ago.

Bedlamjulie · 18/05/2023 22:28

Tired, tired ,tired all the time.Absolutely no energy.Random muscle spasms .Weight gain.Despite levothyroxine & selenium my symptoms persist despite my levels having returned to range.

newtb · 18/05/2023 22:43

Muscle aches
Tendonitis
Recurrent sinusitis
Dry skin, eyes
Constipation
Heavy periods
Weight gain

ErikaReadsTheDailyMail · 18/05/2023 23:49

All of the above r.e the tiredness. Having to sit down halfway up the stairs because I was so tired.
Really irregular periods.
Also I felt like I was inside a snow globe- unable to quite see the world clearly.

Llan349 · 10/06/2023 11:55

Looking for some help interpreting some blood test results in order to help the conversation with my GP which isn't going anywhere.

Background: Had some two years ago and suffered from swollen legs (right is worse, especially around ankle) since. In addition experienced depression, fatigue, hair loss, numb toes, brain fog, dry skin, eczema, can't shift pregnancy weight gained. Basically most things it's very easy to say is related to being a new mum. I also have low blood pressure which the GP commented on but wasn't concerned as wasn't below 90 (109)

Finally had iron and b12 looked at and was low (although still 'normal' range) so being topped up by three months of iron tablets and five b12 injections. That was three months ago and did help but I feel most symptoms returning.

I had a private thyroid blood test done to try and get to the bottom of other causes as no one seems too interested in exploring-can anyone tell me if these look off? Or can suggest a different tac to take. It's been a rough two years. TIA😊

Underactive thyroid

I'm so sorry, I thought I was posting a new thread ( new to this) didn't mean to hijack, please ignore as I can't see how to delete.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 03/11/2023 01:51

For me was the pure exhaustion, nearly hanging onto the side of the sink doing the dishes, could not function, so sluggish, hair loss on lower legs, eyebrows, dry skin, nails brittle and not growing, no interest in anything, brain fog. Insomnia. Hope you get sorted soon but make sure ask for a full thyroid test and for them to also check antibodies, hope got that correct.
