Hi everyone, I've been to gp as I keep catching horrendous monthly colds, the gp is going to run some tests including my thyroid as I have gained a lot of weight in a sort space of time, heavy periods. Could anyone with under active describe some of the symtoms

Diagnosed 91 as a 10 year old hitting puberty. I was in hospital with tummy pains and a consultant walked past saying on a children’s ward my neck gland tells a story at 10.

I had had under active thyroid diagnosed in both 1991 and 2016 according to the gps. I should feel the cold but I don’t, I find it easy to lose weight, to not feel cold.

Oh oh this is ME! I thought it was peri menopause but the doctor thinks my thyroid is on a go slow.

shellyleppard · 03/01/2024 19:19

Underactive thyroid symptoms for me.....thinning hair/ hair loss. Weight gain, constantly feeling cold. Sex drive low. Brain fog but that's improved since the menopause hit. Hmmm the only plus point.....free prescription.

An underactive thyroid slows your whole system down. So digestion, exhaustion, aches, pains, I had headaches and tbh the meds haven't done much for me. I get major leg itching at night, believe to be the levothyroxine. But yes free prescriptions.

Oh could it explain reflux?

Jux · 04/01/2024 00:11

What alerted my gp was a croaky voice. MS could account for all my other symptoms, but I was talking to him about changing one of my ms meds, when he said he wanted to check my thyroid due to my husky voice. Good man, retired now sadly.

I've recently been very ill, first with possible pneumonia (mild) but weakness, exhaustion etc continued and I failed to improve though my obs were fine.

I've just spent a day hospital - to my shame - where they figured out that I'd got so confused while I was ill (8 weeks in bed!) that I must have stopped taking my meds (I have ms too) which included the levothyroxine. Now we've started a routine whereby dh checks every morning that I take them and I believe I am getting better slowly. The doc said it would take about 2 weeks, so I'm looking forward to that.

Your thyroid affects everything, even my ms pain levels! I can't believe I was so utterly stupid.

I went through the symptoms on the NHS site. Apart from sex drive and missing eyebrows, I had everything. And a tightness in my chest (not sure if that’s one).

CrunchyCarrot · 11/01/2024 19:19

Terrible fatigue, hair falling out, brittle nails, weight gain, puffy round the eyes, eyebrows thinning, constipation, always cold, brain fog, unable to concentrate, poor memory.

Oh could it explain reflux?

Yes, because hypothyroidism causes low stomach acid.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 11/01/2024 19:44

Yup that’s me! Plus reflux. My doctor thought it was menopause but my consultant said it’s classic thyroid.

Been fatigued, very fatigued for several years now. Constantly bone achingly tired. Levothyroxine doesn't make a difference. Been on various doses for almost 20 years!

Weight gain. And tiredness. Brain fog.

Vettrianofan · 11/01/2024 19:58

After years of suffering with exhaustion have put a claim in for Scottish Adult Disability Payment due to the symptoms that are chronic and affecting every day life.

An underactive thyroid typically makes it hard for your body to adapt to temperature changes, so as well as being colder than other people in the cold, you might also feel uncomfortably hot in a warm room or on a sunny day.

The good news is that if you do have an underactive thyroid then the thyroxine they give you starts to make you feel better really quickly - within a few days you'll have more energy. It also means that your other prescriptions will be free of charge, so it's not all bad.

Hope you feel better soon!

Haha, feeling better really quickly! I wish! I have been feeling shit before being prescribed levothyroxine years ago. Almost twenty years ago. I never feel well rested, just exhausted constantly.

It may be that you are not converting Levothyroxine (T4) into T3 efficiently. You need to get your FT3 measured along with TSH and FT4. You can buy fingerprick blood test kits online to do this if you have trouble getting the NHS to do it.
