Agonizing toothache please help!

I've got a hole in my back tooth, it's been there for a few months but this last 48 hour have been the worst!

I'm in so much pain it's actually unbearable! I'd rather give birth again than suffer a minute longer- and that's saying a lot as I had a 28 hour unmedicated labour!!

I've tried paracetamol and ibuprofen tried brushing, saltwater rinse, corsadyl mouthwash and ice on my face but nothing is even shifting it!

I'm not even registered with a dentist and haven't been to one since I was a teenager. I have a massive phobia of them and I'm so scared they'll judge the state of my teeth as I haven't looked after them really due to my poor mental health and it's so embarrassing but I'm in so much pain!

Please any advice or tips to help me get a good nights sleep!

Oh god ! That sounds terrible . I found clove oil to be affective in the past though I'm not sure where you might find that on a Sunday night if you don't already have it . A few drops on a cotton wool ball and bite down on it letting it soak in until the nerve is numb !

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 14/05/2023 20:42

I was going to day clove oil too.
Neat alcohol also dabbed on.
Can you get to a dental hospital?

MerryChristmasToYou · 14/05/2023 20:42

Do you have any aspirin?
Dissolve one in warmish water and gargle with it.

I do have aspirin but I read online you can get burns in your mouth doing this? Is that true? I'm literally bawling my eyes out I can't sit still it's unbearable

Problem is dental issues need to be seen to, as they're a threat to you more than just pain.

Please say you're going to get it seen to tomorrow.

mynameiscalypso · 14/05/2023 20:49

You do need a dentist I'm afraid. I am/was in a similar situation but I've found a really lovely dentist who has not judged at all. I currently have a deep-rooted infection underneath a shitty broken tooth and it's fucking agony. For the pain, cocodamol is the only thing that's working for me. Can you get some OTC tomorrow? I've also got some antibiotics to try and treat the infection which seem to be kicking in after a few days of pain. It still hurts and is really inflamed but I'm not in tears which is a start.

Spicypeanuts · 14/05/2023 20:50

Call 111 - if you are lucky you'll be able to access an emergency dentist now

Either way you need to be seen it's not going to go away.

Zonder · 14/05/2023 20:52

This happened to me one Christmas Eve. Emergency dentist was wonderful.

namechanged221 · 14/05/2023 20:53

Call an emergency dentist now via 111

Then chew on whole cloves if you can't find Clive oil and max out the painkillers (safely within recommended dosage)

Go to a late night chemist for help

I'm currently number 4 in the line to speak to them but I bet they'll tell me to ring back in the morning! I'm in so much pain :(

Phone 111 for emergency dentist.
please do not use aspirin or clove oil , both can cause horrific burns. Unfortunately you are now at the stage where treatment is the only thing that will relieve the pain.
If the pain stops please don't think that's it , you need treatment . You may have to ring around a lot and travel but you need a dentist to see and treat you.

Blackbyrd · 14/05/2023 21:04

As a previous sufferer, you should be aiming for any sleep at all. Your GP, A and E etc. will have no interest in helping with dental matters. At best you'll get some antibiotics reluctantly prescribed but no pain relief
Dentists have the authority to prescribe but are always strangely reluctant to do so. A private dentist will be quicker and better, a lot of practices will say that they can accommodate nervous patients as they understand the anxiety a visit to the dentist can provoke
A simple extraction will be quicker and cheaper so you need to decide if that's a possibility for you or if you want to try and save the tooth. As immediate relief, a PP suggested co codamol, also I found breaking off a quarter or so of an effervescent pain relief tablet and placing it directly by the tooth near the gum helped. You have my sympathies, it is an awful pain but you may need to spend some money to resolve it quickly, or indeed at all

HairyKitty · 14/05/2023 21:06

@Bec199923 there is no solution except to go to the dentist.
They won’t judge your teeth what would be the point since it’s their job.
Imagine if you go it could be all done, worry free and pain free in 48 hours. If you don’t go you will suffer until you do.
Can you get some diazepam or whatever they give now for dental phobia?

Icannoteven · 14/05/2023 21:12

It sounds like maybe the hole has reached the nerve of the tooth. I have experienced this and it can be agony. Clove oil/eugenol (one drop on a spoon diluted with a couple of drops of olive oil, to prevent a burn,,mix and rub on tooth), paracetamol and a warm compress might get you through until morning. Then call 111 and ask for an emergency appointment (this costs about 22 quid I think).

Good luck x

LauraNicolaides · 14/05/2023 21:15

Co-codamol is the only thing that I've found that works for tooth pain. Over-the-counter stuff is fine.

You might be able to find a chemist open tonight nearby, eg:
www.boots.com/prescription-support/midnightpharmacy

HairyKitty · 14/05/2023 21:15

I don’t think you should be surprised if it doesn’t count as a “dental energency”. No one will treat the tooth tonight. You would be as well to ring round all your local dentists in the morning. Call early as they do triage.

BettyOBarley · 14/05/2023 21:17

Paramol.
It's paracetamol and dihydrocodeine.
In a black box behind the counter at the chemist.
I've had horrific toothache in the past and it's the only thing that touched it.

PoseyFlump · 14/05/2023 21:22

You can get emergency filling material from Amazon to plug the hole while seeking dental treatment. Do you have prime next day delivery?

YukoandHiro · 14/05/2023 21:27

Because you're not registered you're probably going to have to pay a private dentist to pull it for you. Sounds like you have an abscess below so they'll give you antibiotics first and then pull it when that's resolved.
Sorry OP. I've had terrible toothache like that once when I had an abscess and it was truly horrific. Made me vomit.

opalescent · 14/05/2023 21:31

You poor thing. There is no judgement at all- we are living in a country whose government don't give a shit about dental health, and certainly not for those who can't afford to pay privately.
Stay online to 111, and with luck they will be able to offer an emergency face to face appointment tomorrow.
If there is a pharmacy open anywhere nearby, buy some paramol, ibuprofen and orajel. You can take the paramol and ibuprofen together (but follow the dosage instructions on the pack).
The orajel is a powerful topical anaesthetic which can bring temporary relief when applied directly to the cavity. Try to sleep propped up on pillows. This will get sorted soon.
Depending on where you are in the country, there are dentists who will see you 24/7 (for a price of course!). I know there is one in Milton Keynes if that helps at all.

PoorlyDS · 14/05/2023 21:33

There is an emergency dentist service near us. I'm not sure how their hours work but hopefully 111 will signpost you. Good suggestions here. Take care.

Bec199923 · 14/05/2023 21:34

Little update

I rang the emergency dentist I have an appointment at 10am tomorrow and my friend is driving too the pharmacy soon to get cocodamol and orajel for me.

Wolfiefan · 14/05/2023 21:59

Hope you do get some rest. And good luck tomorrow. I didn’t go to the dentist for over a decade. I then found a lovely one and now can go every six months without anxiety.

HairyKitty · 14/05/2023 22:05

Well done, you will be so relieved when it’s all sorted out

LauraNicolaides · 14/05/2023 22:16

Well done, hope you feel better soon.

Co-codamol has been great for me for really bad tooth pain and also back pain. I think you'll be able to sleep. The codeine in it is an opiate (in a very small dose) and apart from stopping the pain it helps you to feel less anxious and generally rather floaty, sleepy and nice!
