Are semolina and polenta interchangeable?

First time poster here so a bit nervous. DD is learning cookery as part of her Silver D of E (so proud) and we're trying to find healthy vegan recipes to really wow the assessors. This week's is a carrot brocoli and polenta mini quiche but obviously polenta isn't the easiest thing to get hold of. We have semolina but Google is being less than helpful as to whether we can use that instead? Please help 🫠

Hello Op amd Op’s daughter,

is the polenta for the crust?

FroggoDoggos · 24/04/2023 17:03

Yes the main mix is carrot brocoli and egg substitute. Polenta is on the top

Because if you’re doing a vegan tart and using the polenta as an egg substitute for the filling, I’m not so sure that would work with semolina. Happy to be corrected though!

so the polenta is a sort of crispy crust ?

I can’t see why a little semolina wouldn’t work in that case. Can you a make a mini test one ?

Theunamedcat · 24/04/2023 17:06

Semolina is wheat polenta is corn I don't think they would be interchangeable

Fudgewomble · 24/04/2023 17:06

I think polenta would work, look and taste better. I know it’s not your query but my experience is that polenta is cheap and easy to find. At least where I live (London). Eg it’s stocked in Sainsbury’s

heldinadream · 24/04/2023 17:07

No idea about the recipe but polenta is suitable for gluten and wheat free diets but semolina isn't, just in case that could be an issue.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 24/04/2023 17:07

Instead of polenta could you use something like spinach and brown rice? With a layer of ground nuts if allowed.

No no the polenta would never work as an egg substitute! I think she's using aquafaba. Are you sure you know what you're talking about?! I really don't want any trolls on my first post 😕

Not an issue in this case! I might try the suggestion of crushed nuts though

Is it a vegan recipe? Any chance of linking to it?

Gosh you are a rude one. Think you have much to learn about mumsnet etiquette and just basic good manners!!

Augend23 · 24/04/2023 17:15

You can usually buy polenta, often labelled as "cornmeal" if you want the dry stuff. Generally cheap and easy to buy from any reasonably sized supermarket I have found.

I'm sorry if the commenter is a mumsnet user, I really haven't had it long, I'm just worried based on the username that they're turning this into a joke!!

Thank you @30not13 😂

UniversalTruth · 24/04/2023 17:19

@HoofWankingSpangleCunt it must have been all the helpful comments you made that looked suspicious 🙄

@FroggoDoggos polenta would add firmness and structure hence could potentially be egg replacement. I hope you didn't mean to be so rude.

I can get polenta in the following places: Sainsbury's, Tesco, Waitrose, Marks and Spencer. It's also called fine cornmeal in Morrisons and Asda.

RockGirl · 24/04/2023 17:20

Morrisons sell it, just called cornmeal as someone else pointed out.

FroggoDoggos · 24/04/2023 17:22

I truly didn't mean to be rude, just heard a lot about trolling on mumsnet from my girlies! Will try testers each for semolina and nuts 👍

mathanxiety · 24/04/2023 17:23

Cornmeal = polenta.

Don't buy corn flour. It's completely different.

RockGirl · 24/04/2023 17:26

This is the one that I get... groceries.morrisons.com/products/ktc-fine-cornmeal-233728011

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 24/04/2023 17:26

No bother Op . 😂

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 24/04/2023 17:27

You can often find cornmeal/polenta in the Asian good section of mainstream supermarkets (Tesco sell the Natco brand) or just Asian supermarkets. It usually comes in big bags, although cheap enough. You can use the rest to make tortillas (the flatbreads not the omlettes).
