If you have ; how long did it take to go away? Did it just stop hurting or did you do something to cure it?

I've had it about 6 weeks now and I'm fed up. I'd appreciate any advice.

Thank you

Calf stretches and wearing Birkenstocks (summer) and Birkenstock slippers indoors at all times sorted it for me. Good luck - it's so painful!

mountainmother · 06/04/2023 21:01

In the end, I did nothing. Suddenly, 3 or so months down the line I realised it had disappeared. Some people swear by shakti mat rolling across the foot but I suspect this just functions as a distraction more than anything.

Disneyforaweek · 06/04/2023 21:02

I think I have this as well, I've been wearing shoes that I think we're too flat for me and now the bottom of my foot is so sore! Only on one foot though!

I'm going to try and find some supportive insoles to wear with other shoes and hope it goes away!

OneAndDon3 · 06/04/2023 21:03

Yes. Had it post partum for about six months and it was utter shit. Doctors were not helpful. Here is what helped:

Exercises every day. Specifically standing on my toes on a step lowering my heels over the edge for ten/fifteen minutes and rolling a can across my instep while sitting again for ten/fifteen minutes.

Never going bare foot, ever.

Strap on insole inserts or gel pads. Bought these from Amazon.

StopFeckingFaffing · 06/04/2023 21:04

Yes, I had it about 5 years and it's hideous so you have your sympathy

I got myself a special boot thing from Amazon and wore it to sleep in and also on an evening at home and this seemingly solved my problem. I carried on wearing it for a month or so after the pain had gone just to be sure and thankfully it has never returned. First few nights in the boot I ended up ripping it off half way through the night but it didn't take that long to get used to sleeping in it. It basically stops the tendon shortening during the night.

FredaFox · 06/04/2023 21:04

I had it for a good few months, I've had it three times
Have seen a podiatrist about it, they gave me inserts for my shoes and showed me some exercises
I bought a leg brace which I wore in bed, felt a bit like when I had my leg in plaster so I managed fine but can see some would struggle
Good luck, it's so painful

TheStrangestTimes · 06/04/2023 21:05

Yes, it's horrid. It was wearing flat pumps that caused mine I think. I now only wear wedge shoes and trainers (the trainers have insoles inside them for arch support). It took a while, but it did fix it. If I remember correctly it was a good few months once I swapped to wedges and insoles in trainers that my feet felt fine again.

StopFeckingFaffing · 06/04/2023 21:06

*5 years ago that should say, I didn't have it for 5 years that God!

Ethelswith · 06/04/2023 21:06

DH has just been diagnosed with this - so painful he was x-rayed which excluded stress fracture and heel spur. He's got a further appointment at a lower limb clinic but that's not for 3 months (so camping out here for ideas of what really works!)

Right now, he's eating nurofen like they're smarties, and standing on tennis balls

NormalForNuneaton · 06/04/2023 21:09

I've had it on and off for years.

What tends to help is rolling a tennis ball under my foot (using loads of pressure so that it hurts, but in a "nice" way IYSWIM), heel inserts but not the gel sort, and wearing Birkies in the summer and a similar style of slippers in the winter.

Johnisafckface · 06/04/2023 21:10

I had it about seven years ago. It was sooo painful. The only things that worked for me were:

-Rolling a tennis ball under each foot, about 5-10 mins twice a day

-Wearing a sprint/brace all day and night for about two/three weeks, was a pain in the arse

My bout with plantar fascitis started gradually, pain only in the mornings here and there at first til it was to the point where I could barely walk which it took about two years to get that point. Once I started the tennis ball therapy and wearing the brace/splint it was cured within a month or so.

Changeau · 06/04/2023 21:11

I had it for over 2 years . It went away once I started taking hrt.

Eann · 06/04/2023 21:12

You need to see a podiatrist, they can help you and advise you on what shape insoles could help. Don’t just buy random insoles on Amazon they will make it worse if the fit is wrong.

HewasH2O · 06/04/2023 21:12

Skechers Go Walk trainers and Birkenstock shoes, but not sandals. A nurse told me that the Birkenstock sandals I virtually lived in didn't fit my feet closely enough, but their shoes are completely pain free.

GordonBennett345 · 06/04/2023 21:15

Exercises from a physio and it went in 12 weeks or less. She banned me from wearing birkenstocks. Said they're the bane of her life.

carlybitmitoemam · 06/04/2023 21:16

Lasted about 8 months to a year.
What helped: Vionic flipflops at home all the time never barefoot walking and calf stretches several times a day, holding the stretch for a good while, foot massages
What caused: 'barefoot' type footwear on hard pavements.

MrsPuddle · 06/04/2023 21:16

So many suggestions on the internet and yet it’s all very random as to which seem to work for who.

The podiatrist prescribed insoles.
The physio prescribes exercises.
The gp prescribes painkillers.
a friend recommended weird stretchy shoe socks to wear at night.
An internet website recommended rest.

seriously, I became really cynical (and unfit!) after a year and a half not being able to walk without pain.

So My conclusion having tried everything over 18 months, was that it just goes when it wants....but having said that, mine went after 3 sessions of electroshock therapy on the NHS. Each session was a minute of having electricity fired into your foot.

Amazing, instantly cured. I think after that much time your foot nerve endings just need a reboot, as the original injury has long since healed. Go for it ASAP, don’t bother with any golf ball bollox!

ImaynotliketheEducationSecretary · 06/04/2023 21:17

Had it twice. First time when was low in thyroxine (before hit the magic levels of bloods and symptoms so crap I was prescribed levothyroxine). Went away within weeks of medication.
Came back when in peri. Went away within weeks of starting HRT.

Mine is seemingly hormonal.

thatsn0tmyname · 06/04/2023 21:17

Yes! Extremely painful, especially when your weight is off your foot. Needed special insoles in my work flats to support the arches. Took three months to clear up. Links to menopause and oestrogen receptors in joints.

madroid · 06/04/2023 21:19

insoles in my shoes sorted it for me.

Craftyrose · 06/04/2023 21:20

Use tape - the stretchy stuff that you use when strapping up injured muscles. I have had it several times and it's the only thing that sorts it. To prevent it, I only ever wear shoes with an arch support insole including in my slippers! Have attached a pic of how to tape.

SquashPenguin · 06/04/2023 21:20

I had it for about 4 years, and I still get flare ups from time to time. Gel insoles were a huge help, and I wear sketchers trainers now when the pain starts again. Avoid anything flat. My feet are too narrow for Birkenstocks.

chimichangaz · 06/04/2023 21:21

Yes I've had it and it was bloody awful. My feet changed after I was pregnant (went flat footed) and also my hamstrings were very tight. Saw a physio and podiatrist. Lots of exercises to stretch my hamstrings and strengthen my glutes. No more wearing shoes with absolutely no support (looking at you, ballet pumps) but shoes like Clark's loafers with good insoles in. Seemed to cure it although I suffer a lot with my lower body being out of alignment (knees, ankles, hips etc).

Twinedpeaks · 06/04/2023 21:22

I'm 14 years and counting. Not a typo!
