Hi all,

I just need a hand hold or a bit of comfort really. 😞 I was referred under the 2ww for a few moles because a few of them are what they consider atypical. One in particular is a lot darker and looks different to my other moles (and is the one I was most worried about) Anyway I had my appointment today and the Dr said she wasn’t too worried and thinks it’s just a mole (trying to cling onto that) that has changed slightly but isn’t cancerous but she wants it removed. I have crippling health anxiety and it has sent me spiralling. The Dr tried her best to reassure me but I was so upset and panicky. Has anyone else had a dodgy mole removed? Looking for positive stories really.

Thank you xxx

Are you knocking it? I had some removed as a child because they were in awkward places and I caught things on them. None of them were cancerous.

Zapx · 21/03/2023 16:41

I recently got referred under the 2ww for a mole. Doctor I got sent to looked at it for about 2 seconds and declared it normal. I think GPs are often cautious and refer anyway. Try not to panic (easier said than done I know)

Hmm I don’t think so,it is under my arm and is in the same place as where my bra sits so it could be that. It just unnerved me when the Dr said she wanted to remove it. I’m glad it’s going but I just really struggle in medical situations.

I’m glad everything came back normal for you. Fingers crossed all will be okay for me too. 🤞 I’m slightly reassured by the fact the appointment for removal is in 4-6 weeks so hopefully she’s not too concerned but it’s going to be a long wait.

I've had several removed. It's done quickly where I am too. They always err on the side of caution. All been fine.

BloomingHyacinths · 21/03/2023 16:55

DH had one removed last November. GP referred him under 2ww, he saw a Dr and then went back a few days later and it was removed. I was slightly worried as three different doctors agreed it needed checking but it was all clear. An abundance of caution I guess.

potteringaround2 · 21/03/2023 16:56

That’s so reassuring to know, thank you so much. I’m pleased all has been okay for you.

I had two removed. It was quick and done by GP. No further issues.

potteringaround2 · 21/03/2023 16:59

It is a good thing they are cautious about moles it’s just scary when you’re the one having them investigated. I’m glad everything went okay with your husbands referral. It seems like in most cases they turn out to be benign so I’m holding onto that.

I’ve had 4 removed. All fine.

Beamur · 21/03/2023 17:19

My whole family are very mole-y.
My Dad and 2 of his brothers have had several removed. Turned out harmless each time.

potteringaround2 · 21/03/2023 18:14

Thank you so much for your response,it’s so comforting to know so many come back benign.

Pleased they were all okay! Thank you for replying. These responses are definitely calming me a little xx

I had quite a large one removed as I’d knocked it a few times and it bled. Results came back clear. I think they do tend to err on the side of caution and remove any that might be in a tricky place. If they were seriously worried you’d have it removed much sooner than is planned. Try not to worry too much x

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 21/03/2023 18:22

I've had a couple removed because they were atypical etc. Neither turned out to be cancerous

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 21/03/2023 18:23

I am awaiting the results of a suspected melanoma biopsy but at every stage the (2) dermatologists have said that they think it’s dodgy and why. I think they can tell the vast majority of the time.

I’m not worried, I’ll just need a specialist surgeon due to where it is and scarring (head and face).

Sorry if this isn’t reassuring but it’s meant to be, it was evident to then something just as they believe yours is benign.

Good luck

Fudgewomble · 21/03/2023 18:25

I’ve had 12 removed over 30 years and all been fine. It’s such a quick and easy procedure they err on the side of caution and whip them out. My sister has had two cancerous ones but that was it - just removal, 6 or so stitches under local anaesthetic, job done. Skin cancer if caught early is very very treatable.

lljkk · 21/03/2023 18:27

Honestly OP you know your mental illness, there is literally nothing we can say to calm it down.

I always assume doctors are too proactive, ridiculously over-cautious, big fuss and waste of NhS resources about completely nothing each and every time. That would be my starting position. Plus whatever the skin mark is or isn't, you can't do anything to change that. The only harm you can prevent is the harm that would come from worrying excessively about this.

Schmutter · 21/03/2023 18:29

It’s highly unlikely to be anything sinister, but even if it is, you’re doing the right thing and removal will likely be the end of it.

FairyBatman · 21/03/2023 18:31

I've had a fair few removed over years, all as a precaution and all removed within weeks of seeing someone.

The one that was Melanoma was removed on the day there and then, they can usually tell by looking and they were clear that they thought it was dodgy.

Sandysandwich · 21/03/2023 18:36

If it helps, even atypical moles are only malignant 1% of the time. Skin cancer very rarely starts in a mole that is already there. It is overwhelming likely that yours are totally fine.
Removal is very quick and easy and you will be okay.
I have had a few removed because the edges/colour changed, the scarring is tiny and has already gone on mine. They have always been fine- removing it is just a precaution

potteringaround2 · 21/03/2023 18:37

That’s so true,it’s so tricky because the rational part of me knows I’ll be okay but the H/A is just making it impossible to rationalise. I’m so glad yours came back normal though, what a relief x

Glitteratitar · 21/03/2023 18:37

In my experience there are two types of dermatologists - ones who take the wait and see approach and ones who take the “meh, why take the risk, chop them all off” approach.

Sounds like you might have the latter. Doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a concern - just get rid so you don’t have to think about it.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 21/03/2023 18:39

I had a mole for years then suddenly it went very dark and what used to be a round mole was now the shape of Australia, it was on my back so goodness knows how long it had been changing for, had it removed under the 2 week pathway and it came back clear, I was so relieved I was convinced it was malignant.

potteringaround2 · 21/03/2023 18:40

Oh wow I didn’t know that, that is really reassuring to know actually thank you. It just goes to show that even with changes they can come back benign, pleased all was okay with yours x
