Restless legs - any remedies?

harryfan37 · 09/03/2023 22:19

I developed restless legs during my pregnancy - and nearly a year later - it's still there! It comes on every night around 9pm and it's so frustrating. Does anybody have any tips for relief please?

Thank you!

I take beta blockers for anxiety but I've found it helps my restless legs too. Going to try magnesium spray though!

SpottyUnicorn · 09/03/2023 23:56

I developed RLS during my pregnancy. The two things that help are exercise and removing gluten from my diet.

Wonderspell · 09/03/2023 23:59

Tonic water

southchinasea · 10/03/2023 21:04

Iron supplements helped me.

ValerieDoonican · 10/03/2023 21:20

I find magnesium helpful too. But for ne, exercise close to bedtime seems to make it worse!

Makingamess4212 · 10/03/2023 21:39

Hoping to get some answers myself from this! 35 weeks and not sleeping a wink thanks to restless legs. I've tried magnesium supplements, magnesium sprays, iron supplements, hot bath, cold compress, warm compress, exercise, no exercise, change in diet, pain killers. Everything. I am so so so tired. Soon as I sit down it starts.
Feel your pain OP🌹 hopefully something will work for you! FYI the magnesium spray stings when you first start using it! Nothing to worry about but very uncomfortable and itchy.

RiverRock22 · 10/03/2023 21:44

I had restless legs during pregnancy.

I then tested positive for anemia and got prescribed iron supplements. The restless legs went away overnight.

aliasname · 10/03/2023 22:03

Iron (Feroglobin liquid) for me, and it works immediately. Have some a couple of times a week, and if I haven't had enough I swig a mouthful (keep it by my bed!) and it stops straightaway.

Toomuchtoolong · 10/03/2023 22:04

Magnesium spray!

Aquamarine1029 · 10/03/2023 22:07

I would bet my hat you're magnesium deficient. Most people are to varying degrees. Use a magnesium spray at night and start taking magnesium glycinate, at least 500mg, every day. Within a couple of weeks you won't need to use the spray very often, if at all. Just be sure the magnesium you take is glycinate, not citrate.

Crikeyalmighty · 11/03/2023 00:11

@Makingamess4212 blimey it really did burn initially for around a week- not so bad on feet but it was like 'wow' on legs- fantastic though for helping my pubs and needles issues post covid

Honeysuckle16 · 11/03/2023 01:32

I take Ropinirole which has helped enormously. On the infrequent occasions I still have restless legs, I use a deep tissue massage gun which helps a lot.

DimplesToadfoot · 11/03/2023 04:17

I don't like Tonic Water so I drink Bitter Lemon, like TW it also has quinine in. My doc did give me 6 months of quinine medication but then wasn't allowed to give any more, something to do with it being a poison or something like that. I dunno :-/ For me restless legs are the first warning sign my vitamin D levels are low, I take an over the counter Vit D tablet daily and rarely get restless legs now

Woolandwonder · 11/03/2023 07:52

High strength b5 and Magnesium has almost totally sorted mine after years of it being totally awful.

Pinacalola · 11/03/2023 08:04

A bath with epsom salts, elevating my legs if I've been on my feet a lot (the L wall thing is good), stretching my legs really well and getting a good walk in every day, magnesium supplements. Sometimes I massage the muscles in my calves and that seems to help as well

bussteward · 11/03/2023 08:06

Tonic water, exercise, having my DP pull at my foot but this only helps as it’s happening if you see what I mean, and he refuses to stand there all night while I sleep. Also a bar of soap in the bed worked wonders when I had it in pregnancy, similar theory to the potato. Not sure what the theory is. Distraction? Sleeping on a potato or bar of soap is worse than restless legs?

Charlieandlola · 11/03/2023 08:10

These magnesium tablets have stopped my RL problem -

beckslovestimmy · 11/03/2023 11:44

Restless legs can be a sign of anaemia, once I took iron supplements for a couple of months the restless legs disappeared. Mine was from very heavy periods.

holierthanthou73 · 11/03/2023 11:46

I sympathise it’s the absolute worse.

no alcohol or caffeine

harryfan37 · 11/03/2023 20:00

Thank you everyone. I've got the tablets, the oil and some tonic water. Let's see what happens!

@harryfan37 I'm just sat here now going ouch, ouch !! (Just applied the mag spray) )

Makingamess4212 · 12/03/2023 01:10

Just a little update OP. I've ordered a deep massager gun today for restless legs, but in the mean time thought I could try my TENS machine..
I'm lying in bed right now with it on and my legs feel so relaxed and NO spasms!

This is the position for the pads I've used and seems to be great so far. Praying for a good night sleep.
