This is awful.

Night 3 of sleep being effected by coughing but tonight has reached new levels - cannot stop coughing. Lying down is impossible, sitting up isn’t much better. It is constant. And I mean constant. DH has gone to sleep in another room.

Earlier this week I thought it was slightly productive but it now feels very dry and tickly.

I had/have some sort of virus…started with aches, shivers - sore neck, glands etc. then cough started but it wasn’t too troublesome. Now it’s unbearable. And tonight my nose and eyes have started to stream despite the fact that feel much better now in myself.

Any advice?

I feel desperate.

Went down and made a cuppa tea and hot milk with honey to see if either helps. Also took some piriton in desperation,

No advice but there is so nasty viruses going around.

I had a cold with a sore throat that took about 2 weeks for voice to fully come back.

Now I have ANOTHER cold and I also can't stop coughing.

So many*

Codeine (cocodamol from chemist) is a good cough suppressant. That's why people used to get addicted to cough syrup.

I'm in my 3rd year if continuous coughing due to nasal drip and aspiration from stomach acid. Nothing seems to sort it.

Luckily chest x-ray all clear.

sashh · 22/02/2023 04:20

I was about to suggest cocodamol, but talk to a pharmacist because your body needs to be able to cough but it might get you a couple of hours.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 22/02/2023 04:56

Might be whooping cough. You will need to see a doctor.

lightlypoached · 22/02/2023 07:51

Of it goes on for longer than 3 weeks see a dr.

I had covid, followed by RSV (easily picked up from kids) and coughed for about 4 months. It was horrible and damaged my voice box temporarily too.

You just feel so tired with lack of sleep, and the effort to breathe and cough.

Turmeric dissolved in water and with honey can also help. Echinacea is good too.

Thatsridiculous · 22/02/2023 07:52

I actually fell asleep after posting - pretty much upright surrounded by pillows.

So something helped or maybe it all did a little. It really was relentless and when I cough this morning it’s so painful 😞

Hot water, lemon juice snd honey is as effective as cough mixtures- and cheaper!

There have been multiple threads recently about this non- covid virus going around. I had it for 6 weeks over Christmas! Speak to your pharmacist or GP if not easing.

whyhere · 22/02/2023 08:29

Worth a call to the doctor as there's a lot of pneumonia around at present (starting back at work today myself after three weeks off).

LIZS · 22/02/2023 08:40

Sounds like covid,

gamerchick · 22/02/2023 08:42

I usually say night nurse suppresses a cough enough so you can sleep but quite honestly, it sounds like you need a doctor OP. That doesn't sound right.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 22/02/2023 08:43

I was going to suggest Piriton, the liquid sort that you can take multiple times a day. A GP told me to take it after a similar cough that was unbearable.

SeaDee · 22/02/2023 08:50

I had something very similar. Covonia helped a bit but I was coughing relentlessly for over two weeks. Managed to pull a muscle as well from all the coughing. I also used Night Nurse to knock myself out on a couple of occasions.

Amabitnewhere · 22/02/2023 10:24

2 amazing remedies from Portugal:

Boil the peel of a couple of onions, the brown bit - after discarding any mouldy/off bits of course; drink the tea with a bit of honey, manuka honey best though pricey. I can't add honey as have a blood glucose problem but if you can have it, it'll make it nicer and probably help further. It's NEVER failed to help me, ever.

Or, and this I do for husband/kids: slice carrots thinly in a soup bowl, cover them with sugar - yes, sugar, I never believed it either until I saw it work MANY times, an hour later there'll be a syrup you can take. I do this for my kids and again, NEVER fails to clear a cough.

Thatsridiculous · 22/02/2023 16:47

I’ve only had it for a few days since being unwell. I’m not sure my GP would see me?

I am feeling better than I did at the weekend BUT the cough is making me feel sore and like crap.

Has still been rubbish today but not nearly as bad as it was last night.

It’s also very dry - wouldn’t a chest infection / pneumonia produce a more productive cough?

It all feels high up. Like an awful tickle and need to cough. At the moment I don’t feel too “chesty” if that makes sense.

As a child and then young adult I always got a couple of awful coughs per year. Usually a cold type virus followed by weeks of coughing. Was prescribed an inhaler for childhood asthma and any illness ended in me having a cough when I was younger.

I’ve not been as bad over the last few years but this is a cracker.

I had the exact same symptoms a couple of weeks ago. It was awful and I really struggled to sleep. It was Covid.

Headlandblur · 22/02/2023 17:00

Try a Lemsip

TotteringByGenteely · 22/02/2023 17:17

A hot toddy at bedtime helps. Honey, Lemon, Ginger, hot water and a slosh of whiskey.

Jellybean23 · 22/02/2023 17:20

Try eating a small bar of chocolate, there's something in it which is meant to be effective. It sounds daft, I know, but google it and see for yourself. It works for our family.

Ragruggers · 22/02/2023 17:21

I had the same it was COVID.1 teaspoon of nightnurse knocked me out.The suggested dose is 4 teaspoons but doubt you need so much.

I have a virus like that too - and even had that scary barking cough (croup) that I thought only children got. I feel I've cracked ribs on one side it hurts so much.

Keeping the house warm at night (not something we do normally) and steamy (with wet towels on hot radiators) helped. Cold air sets me off again.

Lem-sip or hot toddy (whole lemon - grated fresh ginger - whisky- honey all melted together in a pan and served warm) is comforting.

We suspect covid -unless lemsip are now using petrol as a replacement flavouring for lemon- but are not sure that knowing this helps at all.

Windy1234 · 22/02/2023 17:40

I have covid right now and this is exactly how I feel. I wouldn't have even bothered testing but had some old lfts left and coke tasted funny. Strong positive came up straight away. Exhausted, really sore muscle pains and now a horrible cough that won't go away x

Thatsridiculous · 22/02/2023 20:47

Can I admit that I am scared to try night nurse in case I never waken again!! I know that is irrational!!

The lack of sleep is a killer.

Desperate to go to bed but know I won’t sleep.
