Eczema on my face and eyelids

I've been given some cream for it, but should I gently exfoliate to get rid of the flakes before applying the cream?

Hi there, I have eczema on my eyelids and I would say don't exfoliate. I find that the flakes come off anyway when I put the cream on. Is it diprobase that you've been given?

PrettyCandles · 06/02/2008 14:15

Thanks. Bummer, isn't it? I've been given Eumobase.

yes it's a bummer and a blooming big one sometimes! Sometimes it gets me down because it hardly helps me in my quest to look 21 again.
And I can't use fancy anti0age eyecreams because it sets it off, so I am stuck using diprobase, which is hardly the elixier of youth!

meep · 06/02/2008 20:24

I'm in the same boat
Hate going without mascara - but have to whenever I have a flare up. If either of you know of eye makeup that is eczema friendly let me know!
PS don't exfoliate - don't use any perfumed products/anti-ageing products on your face - watch out for soap in shower gels - Aveeno cream (can get it in Boots) is good for your face and doesn't make it worse!

itsahardknocklife · 06/02/2008 20:26

I have problems with eyeshadow too - sometimes it looks awful when the skin is dry underneath.
I use Avon mascara now and it seems ok so far.

Cremolafoam · 06/02/2008 20:31

agree aveeno fan here
i have just had the flu and it looks like i have more flake than face.(realy bad eczema outbreak)i would slather on a big load of cream and not worry about flakes.soothing is the important thing.i also got some eyedrops from doc that have calmed things down in the eyelid dept.
also taking antihistamine helps too

itsahardknocklife · 06/02/2008 20:32

What exactly is Aveeno?
I have tried lots of face creams but the only one i have not had a reaction to has been Body Shop Vit A stuff.

Cremolafoam · 06/02/2008 20:34

as far as makeup goes i am agreat fan of Avene. Our big boots has it.It has a mineral water in it which calms skin and doesn't irritate my eczema. i am using their water spray at the minute to calm my poor red face.
here

Cremolafoam · 06/02/2008 20:36

Aveeno is a moisturiser with oatmeal in it.
here
i get it prescibed but you can also get it in boots. find diprobase ok but aveeno better

PrettyCandles · 06/02/2008 21:23

Anti-aging cream! That's what set it off!

And my mum gave me what-for when she realised that I had been using the face stuff on my eyes - I didn't realise that you should only put specifically eye stuff on your eyes, I've always just slapped my regular moisturiser on everywhere. The things I've reached my 40s without knowing.

Aveeno is brilliant for cleaning your skin (or the LOs') but I don't care for it as a moisturiser. I tried it on my eyelids and it stung, but have used it on the LOs when they have had eczema and they haven't complained. It's also good in the bath, though I prefer just to use porridge oats (y'know, in the stocking?).

I have a beautiful tub of Creme de la Mer eye cream that DH bought me in a fit of generosity - and I can't use it - sob!
Being curious - how old are your lo's? My face flared up 4 months after giving birth - i reckon due to a combination of stress and hormones! I also developed patches on my hands, inner arms and nack - lovely!!!! I am just an itchy mess!
I have even had to resort to using steroids on my eyelids (0.5%) - not recommended but essential at the time and it did work!

itsahardknocklife · 07/02/2008 13:48

I had mine well before the little man was born

meep · 07/02/2008 13:53

I did have one outbreak on my eyelids pre babydom - but it just went crazy at 4mo!
My little finger is red raw at the moment - I foolishly thought - oh I can wipe the kitchen wworktop ith a "natural" cleaner without my (nonlatex, cost a fortune) rubber gloves - aaarrrrgggghhhhh!!!
It is just the most horrid, upsetting, unbearable, itchy scratchy thing to have

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 07/02/2008 14:12

wow meep, the exact same thing happened to me when my lo was 4 months, I've always had eczema but it went crazy, my eyelids swelled up and I had eczema just all over my face and neck.

I went to the doctors and he sent me away with an enormous carrier bag of stuff. I had antihistamines (3 a day, piriton) betnovate from my body, and betnovate RD (mild strength) for my face/eyelids, aveeno bath oil and body lotion. I bought the aveeno face cream myself from boots, it's good for general use but on bad eczema can sting a bit.

To be honest if it's a big flare up, it can take weeks to go down with just diprobase and steroid creams like betnovate can get rid of it, although they should be used very sparingly before applying an emmollient like diprobase/aveeno/doublebase etc

I definitely wouldn't exfoliate the flakes off at ALL, but especially not with an exfoliating facewash, they're asking for trouble! The flakes are horrible but scrubbing them off can make the patch of eczema spread outwards.

During a flareup on the face I use emulsifying ointment melted in hot water, and a soft cloth or cotton wool, the emulsifying ointment softens the skin, then I pat dry and immediately apply betnovate RD then a couple of layers of aveeno cream.

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 07/02/2008 14:17

I get a reaction to latex too, meep, that's what brought on the last attack, my dentist touched my face with a latex gloved finger.

My hands are always cracked and sore from washing up, even if I use gloves the water gets on my arms or stomach and I get an instant rash.

We should live in bubbles!

Cremolafoam · 07/02/2008 14:23

after all my advice yesterday i am in a big flareup today. am currently waitng for skin clinic appt.i have tried everything and then some
piriton
zirtek
benadryl
phenergan
diprobase
eumovate
trimovate
aveeno
oat baths
aveeno bath oil

i am knackered and my eyes are bulging and weeping and itchy
i am finding it very hard to practice acceptance today

sorry just feel like a winge as distraction

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 07/02/2008 15:08

Oh you poor thing I can sympathise, I'm sporting the "week after the flareup" look, red flaky eyesockets and itchy red "lipliner"

How often did you take your antihistamines? doc said 3 a day but careful if you're driving, if they're the type that make you drowsy.

Sounds like you need a topical cream rather than just more bath oils and emollient creams. Do you have any hydrocortisone/betnovate?

Cremolafoam · 07/02/2008 18:56

we'd make a right pair.LOL
yes i have been given trimovate which is anti-bac antihist and hydrocortisone all in one. it is s disgusting yellow paste and so all my pj's are mingin
i am taking the phenergan at night and the zirtek in the morning.Just about able to stay awake.
went to the gp yesterday just so he could see me during a bad flareup( horrified face) and he gave me benedryl as my eyes were so puffed up i could barely see.that worked for a while. he also rang the skin clinic to get me bumped up the list a bit.
dh is off with man flu and so he has been driving.dd has an ear infection and is home also.
its like a feckin leper colony in this house today.
should tie a red rag to the front door

meep · 07/02/2008 20:10

Oh no - the poor Cremola family
Lol re the lipliner JATB!
My eyes got to a stage where they were so deeply wrinkled that I looked about 60yo!!! And when I can't wear mascara I just look perma-tired!
I've tried anti-hist drops and they do help when I get a severe itch attack!Does anyone wake themselves up by scratching? I do - and when I'm half asleep I don't have the willpower to stop - but ah the scratch is so good even if the aftermath is not so nice!
Do you think we should start a Whingers with ezcema thread where we can go to rant on a regular basis!

pooter · 07/02/2008 23:10

Hello! Me too - its bloody horrible isnt it? People just dismiss excema and allergies, but it has had a really significant effect on my confidence - plus its painful! To cap it all, my lovely 1yr old ds has started to get it, which pains me more than all my years of cracked bleeding flaking reptilian skin.

Anyway - i wasnt going to moan , but say that im allergic to latex too, and use gloves from lakeland - only 1.99 so ive got loads. I wear cotton gloves inside them too - only 1.75 from the local chemists. Still got manky hands though, but it certainly helps!

Im just trying aveeno for the first time, still hopeful of finding something that helps.

PrettyCandles · 08/02/2008 12:54

Thank you, ladies, for giving me a sense of proportion. I lost my eyebrows to an attack of eczema and haven't really come to terms with that yet, so the attack on my eyelids has been upsetting me a bit too. But I see now that I have everything to be thankful for!

I thought I had incredibly sensitive skin - I react so easily to so much - but I'm not sensitive to latex and most of the time I can treat and control my reactions. I live with the sensitivity but I don't have to live with the consequences for very long.
