Positive colonoscopy and bowel cancer stories

Cocopops555 · 13/01/2023 20:39

First time post.
I have been referred for colonoscopy with the 2 week pathway. I found blood on wiping and been suffering tummy ache and trapped wind.
My fit test and “inflammation’ stool test came back as abnormal, with very scores.
I’m absolutely terrified of it being cancer. I’ve had constipation for past few years after having ibs for many years previously.
I’m 51 and just looking for some positive stories while I wait for colonoscopy. Has anyone any experience in this area? Many thanks.

No idea what to do. All they could say was go Back to gp. I was so scared. Now I’m home blood pressure is normal.
think there is some possibility of having a c t scan instead but don’t know.
Sorry you’re not sleeping. That makes everything worse.

Di you have a key worker yet?

newtb · 21/01/2023 14:05

I've had 3 colonoscopies. On the first they found and removed some pre-cancerous polyps - adenomas. I still have to have them rather than sending off samples of poo for checking - normal for over 50s in France.

No. What’s a key worker

@newtb also in France and had the 50s poo test which found blood. How long did you have to wait to get a colonoscopie and what specialist should I be looking for on Doctolib? Thanks for any help.

raspberrytart · 21/01/2023 15:34

So this will be one of the colorectal nurses. But as you haven't had your procedure yet you will get one after the procedure.
They are really helpful and supportive

Reaally sorry to hear that @Cocopops555 you must feel so frustrated and anxious. Was another colonoscopy day not an option? I hope the Gp manages to sort it out for you quickly. I'll be thinking of you.

Hi OP
My daughter had a colonoscopy for the same reasons as you. She was diagnosed with Crohn's disease, they diagnosed her the same day of the colonoscopy

Luluem · 21/01/2023 18:28

My partner was anaemic and positive colonoscopy showed stage 4 cancer. He was treated and is now 6 years clear. It’s terrifying but there are solutions xx

Howdidthathappen1 · 21/01/2023 18:52

Pleased to have found this thread as I've got colon endoscopy Wednesday on a clinical trial of a 'pill cam' so instead of up the bum I swallow a pill with a camera in it and go home!
Intermittent blood in poo - my score(?)was 20 when under 10 is normal so low risk apparently. But since telephone triage I've now developed pain from what I think is a tear in my bum -thats what it feels like.

I go from feeling like its a huge fuss when I've probably got piles or something to thinking it's definitely the worst case. I'm an emotional wreck!

MajesticWhine · 21/01/2023 22:59

OP, sorry your procedure could not go ahead. What a big waste of time after the prep. I have you can get it done very soon.

Leadbypencils · 22/01/2023 12:52

I cannot swallow the pill cam. I tried, failed, gagged, the works. The hospital were not very impressed but some of us just can't do it with a "pill" that size.

Old fashioned endoscopy re scheduled.

Howdidthathappen1 · 22/01/2023 14:38

Oh lordy - I did tell them I'd make a fuss and be arm flapping trying to get it down but they seemed very blasé about swallowing it.
I really hope I can get it over with - I'm feeling for the OP not being able to get it done as my emotions can't take it!!

If it’s any consolation I wouldn’t be able to swallow it either!
Got to go back to GP tomorrow and hope they can help me to get my blood pressure down quickly. My blood pressure just seems to go horrendously high when I’m scared.

ilkleymoorbartat · 23/01/2023 18:35

Any luck with the GP@Cocopops555

Flameshame · 23/01/2023 18:44

My blood pressure was super high as it’s high anyway and I was stressed but they still did the colonoscopy. You should ask them how high yours was. And if it is normal at home take readings and tell them you have white coat syndrome. The doctor won’t treat you for high blood pressure if it’s normal at home

Cocopops555 · 23/01/2023 20:33

You’re right it was 204/102 at its highest but it came down a bit. Your right doctor won’t treat BP without monitoring it a week.
Shes thinking white coat syndrome.
she was brill squeezing me in for an ECG and cholesterol test.
ive just got to patient as apparently consultants meet every week and they will come Back with a plan.
i’m not confident but I guess have to give them a chance. Just so frustrating, I would have known one way or the other.

How are you?

ilkleymoorbartat · 23/01/2023 20:36

So Frustrating for you @Cocopops555. I don't know the difference between a regular colonoscopy and a virtual one but maybe that's an option?

I have a gastroscopy on Wednesday and still waiting for the date for the colonoscopy. I'm going to call tomorrow to chase them.

crumpetsryummy · 24/01/2023 21:06

Hope you are ok cocopops. Have to say no wonder your BP is high with the level of worry, mine was on the high side but was in the normal "acceptable" levels for someone who was not looking forward to having a camera down the throat and up.

Thinking of you and a quick conclusion.

ilkleymoorbartat · 24/01/2023 21:11

Did you have sedation for the gastroscopy @crumpetsryummy ? I have one tomorrow and am terrified. I just want them to know me out.

crumpetsryummy · 24/01/2023 22:00

No i didnt have sedation for either procedure.
I went in thinking i must have it as i have had a gastroscopy in the past and it wasnt nice and also thought if having it for the colonoscopy then might as well have it. Pre op nurse said as a rule only give it to patients who are literally unable to walk into the room. Also sedation stops your bodies nTural coping methods if that makes sense
A spray in back of throat to numb and that was all. Not going to lie it isnt one of the most pleasant procedures, but its over in next to no time, the pre worries and not knowing is far worse.

I totally get where you are coming from about wanting to be knocked out, again no pleasent but is very quick.
