Talk me through conscious sedation...

I'm due to have a tooth extracted 11/01 and I'm a bit nervous... I'll be having it out under conscious sedation and just wondered what the whole experience is like from start to finish? They did send me away with a sheet to read just after my pre-op but I've misplaced itBlush Is it administered through your hand or through a mask? Will I be awake and chatty or likely to be sleepy? Can I leave straight after? and how long will I be out of it/ woozy? Thanks for any experiences sharedSmile

I had light sedation when I had an eye op. For me I had an injection through an IV and within a few minutes I just felt calm. Not woozy or sleepy, just absolutely blissfully calm. I was able to maintain a conversation and felt completely aware but not bothered by anything.

Honestly it was fabulous, and at the time I had a surgeon cutting three little holes in my eyeball and doing microsurgery in there so should have been feeling some kind of concern or distress.

I was fine leaving the hospital 30 mins after surgery was ended too, just had to have a coffee and biscuit before they let me leave.

I've been with my Dh and my sister for dental sedation they got it iv I don't think they were chatting to the dentist but were chatty when they came out seemed coherent but clearly out of their tree 😃 Dh was dazed snd repeating himself went to bed afterwards slept for hours, my sister wanted to sit on the sofa with a drink , she then went to bed, neither remember anything about their treatment it can take a day or so for the sedation to leave your system, oh and you need to take someone with you.

Mrsjayy · 01/01/2023 23:55

On separate occasions obviously it wasn't a family day out,

katem98 · 02/01/2023 00:15

Thank you both!

Ha, @Mrsjayy that made me chuckle. When you say that I need to take someone with me, do you mean for the actual procedure or just to take me home?

I had shoulder surgery with local and light sedation. Apparently I told the surgeon all about my holidays. I have no memory of anything after I entered the operating theatre.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/01/2023 00:19

I felt calm and unbothered.

DH said I was a right chatty drunk afterwards, which I have no memory of at all.

I had it recently for extractions and it was absolutely fine. You are still awake, almost woozy and so relaxed.

You come out of it pretty quickly and you have someone with you for 24 hours after and to take you home.

Its nothing at all to worry about I promise

i had dental surgery (sinus lift for an eventual implant) 6 weeks ago.
i was placed on a stretcher (street clothing with short sleeves) , 3 nurses in the room plus anesthesiologist and the dentist.
bp cuff on one arm and iv on the other.
"i'll be administering your med now" zero memory thereafter.
"bite down on this please, you're surgery is over". i chatted a bit then was assisted to put my coat/boots on.
they placed me in a comfy chair took my bp a few more times then my dh came by and walked me to the car.
chatted about my coat and gloves, he tucked me, propped up in bed.
he's a great nurse, checked on me, offered me fluids, walked me to the bathroom the first time etc.

I had eye surgery under sedation. It was great! I had all the monitoring attached beforehand, then was wheeled into theatre. The IV was started and I remember nothing else until I was being wheeled out of theatre again. I don’t remember having local anaesthetic injected into my eyelids but I was totally pain free when I came round. I would happily have sedation for a medical procedure again.

katem98 · 02/01/2023 09:34

Thank you so much everyone, really appreciate it! Sounds like no hospital gown required then, that's always a positive Wink hate those things.

Had it for an endoscopy recently. Don’t remember a bloody thing!

ellesbellesxxx · 02/01/2023 10:07

I had it for IVF egg collection and don’t remember a thing either😁

travelmad · 02/01/2023 10:14

I had it for wisdom tooth extraction, it was wonderful - I don't remember anything between them injecting it and being told it was all over. I did however have a bit of a reaction afterwards when I got home where I became very disoriented and angry. They did warn that me that I wouldn't be in my right mind for about 24h and to stay off social media/online shopping just in case I did something I would later regret, but I wasn't expecting it to be so intense. My DH at the time was a bit concerned with my behaviour so rang the dental hospital back and it seems I had a stronger reaction to the drugs but that it was in the range of normal. Just a heads up in case.

Just to take you home,

GetOffTheRoof · 02/01/2023 11:52

You'll absolutely need someone to get you home.

I become more likely to kick off and be violent under conscious sedation....

Twice I've been restrained after apparently swinging for the dentist 😑. However I've little if any recollection of it - I remember hearing someone shout "for God's sake give her some more" and my Dad crashing through the treatment room door. I was 19 for that one. He'd run in because of the noise.

I phoned up after another treatment in my 20s to ask about marks on my lower neck - not complaining, but because people had remarked it looked like a hand print. It was indeed a hand print, they had tried to hold me down while I fought my way out the chair. They apparently explained it when I left, but I'd no memory from then. My mate was my escort and thought it hilarious....

Another time I had bruises on my face - I'd tried to punch the dentist, but I had tools hanging out my mouth at the time so they tried to remove them while I was fighting with them.

I'm a very calm, non-violent and sensible person when I'm not off my face!

frazzled101 · 02/01/2023 15:01

@ellesbellesxxx me too. Apparently I was talking during it but I don't remember a thing.

middleoftheroadlife · 07/01/2023 12:14

I had it last week for gastroscopy. So glad I did. I felt really relaxed and it went without a hitch. Felt normal straight after and no side effects.

MargaretThursday · 07/01/2023 17:08

DD1 has it at the dentist.
She doesn't remember through it, but she does say some very funny things when going under. The first time she came to, she was angry because her last memory was the whole room laughing at what she'd said (it was very funny).

Her dentist recommends not posting on social media or buying anything online for 24 hours afterwards as "your natural judgement may be impaired."

katem98 · 11/01/2023 13:33

Aaaaand it's done... is it normal to be in so much pain afterwards? Sad

Wow! That's some strong stuff!

But anyway, conscious sedation sounds amazing. Do you need a medical condition to have it?! Grin

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 11/01/2023 13:50

Oookay so once again I've learned to RTFT.

Some of these experiences sound a bit scary .., I'm sorry my first post made light of it.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 11/01/2023 13:51

And well done OP.

Unikeko · 11/01/2023 13:55

Well done OP! I felt everything during mine but I just didn't care and was really buzzed afterwards. I still remember everything, but I had a colleague that forgot everything after she went to sleep.

Take whatever painkillers the dentist recommended- hope you feel better soon!

katem98 · 11/01/2023 13:57

Thanks both! Yes, I remember the crunching sound of my tooth coming out 😐 but 99% sure I didn't say anything strange whilst under sedation. This pain is no joke though and not even codeine is touching it 😪 I hope it gets better!
